Northern Ireland, 1979: Nuala is a tough 9-year old living with her mother, brother and grandad, she thinks the class bully is just a big baby, and that all the nuns are cranky old wrinkled-up crones. She loves Thin Lizzy and The Undertones - just like her big brother, Oran, who is 15 and thinks he’s Casanova. Nuala thinks he’s more like Jesus; she’d do anything for him. But what she does one day for her brother, no-one could ever have imagined… Set in a prison 10 years later, Grenades is a compelling drama that has at its heart the bruised innocence of Nuala, who must re-live the events of her childhood and finally make sense of them all. A highly acclaimed first play by award-winning writer Tara McKevitt, in an exciting production by Galway’s Mephisto Theatre Co. starring Emma O’Grady, directed by Caroline Lynch. “…enthralling…heart-wrenching…” - Irish Theatre Magazine “…fantastic performance… …a vital production” - Culture NI “…little fire-cracker of a play…” - Herald Scotland “…powerful… …O’Grady’s fierce, heart-wrenching performance is impossible to fault”. - Scotsman Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 20th March @ 8.00pm Le Quattro Volte

2010 Italy 88 mins Language: Italian with English subtitles Le Quattro Volte (‘the four times’) is a transcendent, contemplative and exquisitely filmed meditation on the cycle of life by director Michelangelo Frammartino. Set in the Calabrian countryside, the film explores the Pythagorean notion of four states of being (human, animal, vegetable, and mineral), commencing with an old goatherd emerging out of the smoke rising from a charcoal kiln and ending with the charcoal haze of what was once a mighty fir tree drifting across the screen. What happens in between has left film critics struggling for superlatives. We’ll leave the hard sell to them. “Pure delight… a wonderful film about life, the universe and everything. It’s captivating, touching, wryly humorous, mysterious, intriguing and uplifting.” - Trevor Johnston, Time Out “This beautiful movie… ” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “Extraordinary… A cinematic poem, a spiritual exploration of time and space.” - Philip French, The Observer “A devastating, profound and at times surreal work of art.” Michael O’Sullivan, Washington Post Adm. €5

CONTEMPORARY GUITAR Wednesday 21st March @ 8.00pm Preston Reed

“Q: when is an acoustic guitar not an acoustic guitar? A: when it’s in the hands of New York visionary Preston Reed.” - Total Guitar Preston Reed is recognised internationally as one of the greatest guitarists in the world, and also as a ground-breaking musical innovator. In 1987 he invented a two-handed playing style and compositional approach that integrates the full percussive potential of the guitar body. In doing so Reed revolutionized guitar playing. Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style. The power and depth of his original compositions are as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, interlock and attack to create a sonic brew quite unlike anything you’ve heard before. Need we say more? “Widely thought of as the world’s most gifted guitarist.” - Total Guitar “In a class of his own.” - Jack Massarik, London Evening Standard “Fiendishly intricate.” - The Irish Times “True spellbinding guitar mastery.” - Guitarist Magazine “Spectacular… a terrific performer.” - The Irish Independent Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

THEATRE Monday 26th March @ 8.00pm Splódar Theatre Company - Sive

Described as a piece of theatrical magic, John B. Keane’s Sive has consistently lit up Irish and world stages since it was first produced in 1959, and characters such as the innocent young girl Sive, the scheming Mena and the ruthless Tomáisín Seán Rua are as recognisable today as they were back in the fifties. Keane brings his genius to bear on this modern classic of greed, sex and bitterness in language of sublime lyricism, and his introduction of the traveller Pats Bacach and his balladeer son Carthalawn is one of the most imaginative devices in modern Irish drama. Splódar is proud to present this great play in this, the 10th anniversary of the author’s death. Directed by Prin Duignan. Splódar is the resident drama company in the Glens Centre, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, and has been active since 1995. Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

FLAMENCO JAZZ GUITAR Thursday 29th March @ 8.00pm Eduardo Niebla

Continually seeking out new musical terrain, Niebla has traversed the worlds of pop, jazz and world music, collaborating with such diverse partners as sitar maestro Nishat Khan, George Michael, Lol Coxhill and Craig David. Accompanied for the concert by fellow guitarist Matthew Robinson, expect a spellbinding evening of passion, verve and fleet fingered virtuosity from one of the most potent forces in flamenco jazz fusion. ”Poignantly poetic... and truly breathtaking.” - The Scotsman ”Stunning flamenco jazz.” - The Sound “Niebla is the king of Latin guitar, a world-class virtuoso.” - Time Out “Astonishing.” - Q Review “Stunning… a potent force.” Jazz UK “Dramatic, emotional, spicy, fleet-fingered… Niebla continues to play from the heart.” - The Herald Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

TRADITIONAL MUSIC Thursday 12th April @ 8.00pm Brendan Begley & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Consummate musicians Brendan Begley and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh combine their formidable talents to present A Moment of Madness, an evening of “wild and beautiful music from the West coast of Ireland”. Dingle peninsula native Brendan is a renowned button accordionist, touring at home and in Europe. A member of The Boys of the Lough, his exciting dance music, sensitive emotional slow airs and singing as gaeilge make him a great favourite with audiences. Dublin-born fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh is rapidly becoming known as one of the most interesting and creative musicians in Traditional music. Since the success of his 2003 album Kitty Lie Over, he has performed in the US, Canada, Alaska, Asia and all over Europe and Ireland. A night of Top Trad in prospect. “An inspired pairing. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 17th April @ 8.00pm The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito)

Spain 2011 117mins Language: Spanish with English subtitles The acclaimed director of Volver, Talk to Her and many more, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film is a macabre suspense thriller about obsession, drawing the work of Davids Lynch and Cronenberg as well as Hitchcock into his directorial palette in a melodramatic offering more redolent of his earlier films. Also harking back, the film sees the return of Antonio Banderas to Almodóvar’s repertory company, as a plastic surgeon seeking to develop an artificial skin after his wife has died as a result of horrific burns caused by a tragic car crash. Offbeat, perhaps, compelling and dazzling film-making, certainly. “Scintillating… a moving exploration of the nature of human identity. Almodóvar at his daring, provocative and allusive best.” Philip French, The Observer “Bizarre, elegant… A luxury pulp fiction, an exotic brew that only Almodóvar could ever make.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “A psychosexual thriller... anchored in Almodóvar’s meticulous direction.” - Dave Calhoun, Time Out Adm. €5

THEATRE Wednesday 18th April @ 8.00pm Fishamble Theatre Co. - Wheelchair On My Face

Actress and stand-up comedian Sonya Kelly (Savage Eye) delivers a hilarious and poignant one-woman show based on her own childhood experience. Sonya was diagnosed with myopia when she was seven years old. “I got my first pair of glasses when I was seven. A nurse came to the school and tested everyone’s eyes. And so it was discovered why I’d thrown bread to the floating crisp packets in our local pond and walked into lamp posts and said, ’excuse me’. Until that day the world was a swirl of moving coloured blobs. I thought it was the same for everyone. How wrong I was.” Part memoir, part theatre and part stand-up comedy, Wheelchair On My Face is written and performed by Sonya Kelly and directed by Gina Moxley for Fishamble, one of Ireland’s most dynamic theatre companies. “Delightfully whacky… hilarious… tight script and engaging performance… terrific.” - The Irish Times ”Hilarious, poignant… it will please viewers of all lens-prescriptions and none.” - The Irish Theatre Magazine Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions) NB: Performance: 55 mins duration

MAY ON OUR DOORSTEP

MAY ON OUR DOORSTEP - exploring local May customs May On Our Doorstep is a collaborative project between the Linenhall Arts Centre and the Education & Outreach Department, National Museum of Ireland - Country Life. It is a celebration of local May customs through a number of events including exhibitions, workshops and talks, and an opportunity to exchange and record local May customs. The ancient feast of Bealtaine celebrates the arrival of summer and was marked by a variety of customs. Traditionally flowers are associated with May and are believed to protect against bad luck. They were used to decorate the May Bush and May Altars and they are hung in the house, laid on doorstep, window sills and pathways. In towns throughout Mayo the custom of leaving flowers on doorsteps on May morning continues to this day. This project aims to celebrate these customs through a series of events at the Linenhall Arts Centre and the Museum of Country Life. You can take part in the project by attending the events taking place in both venues.
