As you can see from our programme, we are just bursting at the seams with wonderful things for you to see and do over the coming months and we are very much hoping that you will join us for at least some of them. I am personally looking forward to the Niamh O’Malley exhibition scheduled in all five publicly-funded visual arts spaces in Mayo. It’s on for the month of September and provides the perfect excuse for a trip around the county. We also have some brilliant theatre including two plays directed by Andrew Flynn, recently shortlisted for the Irish Times Best Director award. But that’s just a tiny part of what’s on offer. There’s traditional music, classical music, folk music, contemporary music, performed by such superstars as Chatham Saxophone Quartet, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Ger Wolfe, Nikolay Khozyainov, Johnny Duhan, Noel Hill, but not all on the same night now, you understand. Our Film Club is a great way to spend a rainy Tuesday night, for a mere €5 you get to see the finest films from all over the world. We also screen the Metropolitan Opera live from New York and it really is spectacular. The best seat in the house is reserved for you and there are some crackers this season, including Puccini’s Tosca and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky. If this is the first time you’ve received our brochure then I need to alert you to its hidden treasures. All workshops on offer are located towards the back of the document and be warned, the workshops fill up very quickly so early booking is advisable. We’ve also introduced a centre-page pull-out with all our listings, so give it pride of place on our fridge. Finally, you probably thought we were gliding this summer, but like swans we were paddling furiously to bring you a brand new website, complete with on-line booking. We’ve also changed our box-office booking system and we hope the data transfer has been impeccable, but if you got our brochure when you asked us not to send it, or you didn’t get one when you should have, please forgive us. Cork singer-songwriter Ger Wolfe has worked hard at earning his reputation as one of Ireland’s most unique contemporary singersongwriters. Always pushing the boundaries of his own particular corner in the world of contemporary songwriting, since 1998 he has released six albums of original music on independent label Raggedy Records: Word and Rhyme, Ragged Ground, Heaven Paints her Holy Mantle Blue, The Velvet Earth, No Bird Sang and Fréamh: Root. He is currently working on an exciting new album I Have Been Loved. Johnny Duhan started his career as a fifteen year-old front man with Granny’s Intentions, the most popular beat group in Ireland in the 60s. Disbanded before he was twenty one, Johnny started writing folk songs, poetry and prose. A performance celebrating music from around the world, by a range of musical communities. The Why Not? Adventure Film Festival is an annual adventure sports film festival that takes place in various locations around Ireland. For 2013 the festival will travel to Dublin, Galway and Castlebar for one night each. The festival combines adventure sport films with guest speakers. With a sound that has been described as “a mix of lounge lizard schmooze and mariachi passion” and “punk latino”, Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club is an eclectic, roots collective of musicians, friends and songs “inspired in part by a musical circus troupe from Barcelona, the movie soundtracks of Quentin Tarantino and the music of New York artists Lou Reed and Willy DeVille”, and renowned for its charisma, wit and sheer musicality. Brothers James and Joseph Garvey together with Martin Smith began singing close-harmony folk songs as friends at University (NUI Maynooth). Now graduated, the trio has expanded from performances in the north Kildare region to singing in Mayo (the Garvey’s home county) as well as Dublin and up and down the country. Their name ‘Garvey, Smith & Garvey’ is a reference to their greatest influence; Crosby, Stills & Nash, while other major featuring artists in their repertoire include Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young as well as cherry-picked folk and pop songs from any and all decades arranged especially for three-part male harmony. For the first time the five publicly funded visual arts spaces in Mayo have combined their resources and facilities to present the exciting video and sculptural work of Niamh O’Malley. This collaboration offers the opportunity to experience the art of one of the most thoughtful artists working in Ireland today. The show comprises: Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet: Quarry, 2011 (Video Projection) Ballina Arts Centre: Bridge, 2009 ; Flag, 2008 (Video Projections) Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle: New Drawings Customs House, Westport: Window, 2013; Screen, 2011 (Sculptures) Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar: Island, 2010 (Video Projection) The curator of this major show, Patrick T. Murphy, Director of the Royal Hibernian Academy, outlines Niamh’s work: “Niamh O’ Malley creates single channel videos full of depth and penetration. Her images are engaging and direct. Whether an island or quarry, a bridge or a flag, her videos confine our attention to the image, demanding of us a response to the timelessness of nature and the transitory quality of the manmade. Played in black and white, gently paced and without sound, O’Malley’s videos create a shared space between viewed and viewer. Their quiet attentiveness to this relationship reveals to us the sophisticated dynamics of perception. Her sculptures incorporating as they do glass and mirror also examine this interdependence as much as they propose their own internal sense of beauty.” Niamh O’Malley is based in Dublin. Her work has been seen recently in solo exhibitions in Norway, Italy, Spain and France and throughout Ireland in various venues and festivals. Artist Lucy Hill has created something really exciting and different for our annual exhibition for young audiences. paint is an interactive, participatory, multimedia, multi-sensory exhibition of abstract painting. In short, an exhibition you can play with! With an array of opportunities to interact with the works, through looking, smelling, listening, drawing and playing with materials, this will be an exhibition you and your children will want to return to. Reflecting the shifting focus in education towards ‘process’ as much as ‘product’, this exhibition exposes the artist’s working methods alongside her paintings. This is not a didactic ‘how to paint’ exercise, rather it aims to tackle the myth that a real piece of art is a form of perfection that appears by magic, and is made by especially gifted creatures. On the contrary, art making is connected to earthy and utterly human states and questions including messiness, pleasure, fun, persistence, procrastination, time, despair, frustration, joy, curiosity and obsession. The exhibition also aims to draw attention to the phenomenon of ‘flow’ (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi 1990), observing how readily children slip into deep involvement when they are fully engaged with creative materials, and how an artist’s most satisfying work happens while in that same state of flow, how precious that state is and how delicate and difficult it can be to orchestrate. THEME THEME for this year’s Mayo Artists Show is ‘20:20 VISION’. SIZE ALL WORKS (both 2D and 3D) are to be NO LARGER THAN 20cm in any dimension (NOT including frame). Works may be in any medium. SUBMISSION DETAILS The dates for submitting work are Thursday 14th - Saturday 16th November (inclusive), when work can be dropped off at the Linenhall between 11.00am and 5.00pm daily. The work will then undergo a selection process by an external adjudicator. Artists may submit a maximum of 2 pieces each, with a handling charge of €5 per piece. Craftworks Mayo was established in March 2012 as a not-for-profit network of local craft workers to champion and promote unique and quality assessed craft and design in County Mayo. WORLDS OF MUSIC PERCUSSION WORKSHOP PROJECT for adults In October and November percussionist extraordinaire Robbie Harris will work with ten Western Care service users and five members of the public to create and perform a piece of music. Robbie will guide and assist the participants in reaching their music and performance goals and facilitate them in working together to create a cohesive performance piece. This project will provide participants from the general public with the opportunity to explore collaborative music making practice, create work towards a performance, and engage with people with disabilities in a meaningful way. WORLDS OF MUSIC PERCUSSION WORKSHOP PROJECT takes place over eight mornings 11.00am-12.30pm, dates as follows: Mon 14th, Thur 17th, Mon 21st, Wed 23rd, Tue 29th October, Fri 1st, Mon 4th, Fri 8th November. A performance of the work created will take place on the evening of Friday 8th November in the Linenhall theatre. puppeteering workshops for 9-12 year olds with Carmel Balfe over two Saturdays 21st & 28th September, 11.00am-12.30p Bring along your imagination and make some magic in these jam packed, fun puppeteering workshops. Over two sessions participants will create a puppet, learn how to animate it, develop a story involving the puppet, and create a short film of their story with the puppet in the lead role! Workshop facilitator Carmel Balfe of Mayo-based company Little Gem Puppets will guide participants through all the necessary steps in a workshop full of skills from 3D construction to storytelling, puppeteering and team working. Carmel Balfe has a background in Fine Art. She studied print making and craft at Crawford College of Art and model making and special effects at Dun Laoighaire IADT. She has worked as a puppet maker for companies including Disney, Pokemon and Nickelodeon, and has produced a number of films. She is based in Mayo, from where she runs Little Gem Puppets. www.littlegempuppets.com. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: VISUAL ART WORKSHOPS INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING FOR ADULTS
workshop series with Betty Gannon 11.30am-1.00pm, for four Fridays from 27th September Back by popular demand! We’ve all engaged in drawing at some point in our lives, whether it’s doodling while on the phone, or drawing to illustrate something more clearly for a friend. Here’s your chance to explore and develop your drawing skills more fully, with guidance from an experienced artist. In a relaxed series of workshops, with step by step instruction you’ll explore the different tones, shading, marks and lines you can make with a pencil. Learn the different ways to hold a pencil in order to achieve a variety of effects, and find out nifty tips for developing textures. The workshops will include exercises focusing on observation, composition, and form. Participants will learn to recognise tonal differences, light and shade, and the form of an object. Westport artist Betty Gannon studied Fine Art at GMIT and works mainly in drawing, painting and 3D work. She has exhibited throughout the country including solo shows at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Watergate Theatre Gallery and the Alley Arts Centre. VISUAL ART WORKSHOPS paint-lab
from 2year olds upwards with Lucy Hill From Saturday 5th October (for 3 weeks) paint-lab is a series of three Saturday workshops facilitated by artist Lucy Hill to compliment her exhibition paint (see Visual Art pages). The workshops are open to children of all ages from 2 years upwards (children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult). There will be an opportunity to interact with the exhibition and discuss art processes with the artist before setting to work in the ‘lab’ where different painting possibilities will be on offer each week. Working with different paints (acrylic, watercolour, oil, egg tempera), adding textures to the paint (wax, stone-dust, chalks), experimenting with surfaces (papers, gesso, wood) and making your own paintbrushes and tools, participants will create works that will be displayed during RoolaBoola, alongside photos of them making the work.

Lucy Hill is a Newport based painter who studied painting and film-making in Cork, NCAD Dublin and Barcelona (M.A). Her work has been widely exhibited in Ireland and abroad and she has been the recipient of numerous awards, public art commissions and residencies. Lucy first developed her workshops for 2 year olds at the Linenhall Art Centre, and she runs ongoing workshops throughout the year for children and adults from her studio in Westport. (www.lucyhill.ie) paint-lab runs over three weeks from Saturday 5th October (continuing Saturdays 12th & 19th October) at 3-4.30pm, children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult. workshop series for adults with Jean Tuomey 2.00pm-4.00pm, for six Wednesdays from 30th October There’s a book in you... Have you ever been told that? This sixweek course will provide a guided structure for the first draft of the memoir you always meant to write but never got around to it. Each week triggers and guidelines will be provided to help you write the story. No previous experience of writing is necessary, just a willingness to give it a go. The series is under the guidance of Jean Tuomey, a teacher with over 20 years experience. She trained as a writing facilitator with the National Association for Poetry Therapy in the US, and has a passionate enthusiasm for creative writing. Jean has led many extremely successful writing projects for the Linenhall. SINGING WORKSHOP Lu La Lo A Chroí: Lullabies & Dandling Songs
workshop for parents of young children (5 yrs and under) with Batsheva Battu on Saturday 2nd November 11.30am-1.00pm Come and learn new lullabies to sing to the children you love! Workshop facilitator Batsheva Battu will guide participants through learning a number of rare songs from Ireland and Great Britain. The songs are the product of musicological research that led Batsheva to spend many weeks in the Irish Traditional Music Archive, Dublin. During the workshop, participants will go slowly through songs, and may bring along recording devices as memory aids. An ideal workshop for families with young children (5yrs and under), adults with an interest in Celtic/traditional music, or indeed for anyone with an interest in the Lullaby tradition. Batsheva Battu holds an MA in Irish Traditional Music from University of Limerick and has performed in Ireland and internationally. She has facilitated singing workshops in a variety of music styles since 2002. VISUAL ART WORKSHOP Creative Christmas
visual art workshops for 5-7 year olds & 8-12 year olds with Breda Burns over 2 Saturdays commencing 7th December A fun, festive workshop in which participants will have the opportunity to put their own creative stamp on Christmas this year. Over the course of two Saturdays join artist Breda Burns to create a very special container for hiding your gifts for others in the weeks before Christmas, and for storing your most prized possessions when Christmas is over. What shape will your container be? A bell, star, Santa silhouette... there are lots of possibilities. Over two sessions you’ll be busy designing, constructing and decorating your very own Christmas treasure chest. Breda Burns is a Westport based painter. She has exhibited her work widely both in solo and group exhibitions. Breda has been teaching, leading community art projects and facilitating art workshops for many years. PHYSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP An Introduction To Physical Theatre for adults
with Judith Higgins and Miquel Barcelo 4 Mondays, 7.30pm-9.30pm, commencing 18th November Explore the wonderful creative world of physical theatre where you can literally make something out of nothing by using the body in the space to create your own props, costumes and sets! The workshops will have a particular focus on Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle and on the second night of the workshop series you will attend Bruiser Theatre Company’s performance of the play at the Linenhall. Bruiser’s signature style is physical theatre, using minimal set for maximum impact. Their approach will be discussed in subsequent workshops, during which participants will also be introduced to the approaches of Lecoq, gestural languages, and the art of using the body’s physicality to create focus on the situation, the action and the suggestion. Previous acting experience is not necessary but would be helpful, please bring your imagination and some comfortable clothing! Judith Higgins studied at Trinity College, Dublin and Central School of Speech and Drama, London. After training at Ecole Jacques Lecoq Paris, she worked as performance director in Macnas from 2000-9. She currently teaches drama and dance at Claran N.S. Headford, Co.Galway and is tutor in Movement at Core Theatre College, Galway. Miquel Barcelo is a freelance theatre performer, director, musician and practitioner. Trained at Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, he co-founded Teatro Punto and The Gombeens and has worked around Ireland, Spain, France, Holland, Italy and the United States. Introduction to Physical Theatre Workshops for adults take place over four Monday nights commencing November 18th from 7.30pm-9.30pm (continuing 25th Nov, 2nd Dec, 9th Dec). Cost per head for the workshop series is €50 and includes attendance at Bruiser performance of Caucasian Chalk Circle on Mon 25th November at 8.00pm. Places are limited, and booking is ESSENTIAL.
