Your Free Indo Surf Journal
Premiere Issue, July 2009
The Last Line The long-haired topeng (masked) surfer at near left is Rico Jimenez, a dramatist and hot rider from Hawaii who recently immersed himself in local culture. Meanwhile, at the far left is an unusual Indonesian surf art detail from a painting recently created by Pak Wiyadi, a senior Jogjakarta artist who specializes in traditional wayang (puppet) artworks which are rendered in an old Wayang Beber style which originated long, long ago in the Central Java town of Pacitan. This form of wayang is the oldest type known in Indonesia and predates other wayang forms such as wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and wayang golek (three-dimensional puppets). Pak Wiyadi has never surfed in his life but he certainly figured out a unique way to interpret the sport in a local-Indo and ancient Java-Hindu style. The large wayang character (at lower left) is Bima, a god associated with the sea, and the whimsical red wayang surfer (at top right) is a scary, problem-causing character who terrorizes non-local surfers. This particular detail is from a much larger canvas and is reproduced courtesy of The Wanderer. Photos by Leonard Lueras

WILL THIS BE YOUR FAVORITE WAVE IN 2020??? Didn’t think so! Find out how you can help play a role at www.rolefoundation.org
Surfer Magazine’s October 1982 issue covered two Balinese junior surfers in their prestigious New Hot 100 list: Ketut Menda and Made Kasim. Both made international names for themselves while achieving legend status by dominating Indonesian waves through the 80s and 90s and for helping shape the Indonesian surf industry and scene into what it is today.
27 years later the two are family men and are focused on their Balinese Hindu religion. Menda owns the Bali Barrel surf shop in Kuta and is still out ripping every time the waves are going off but recently said that lately he is spending more time at the temple, getting more involved. Kasim has taken this more seriously by following his father’s path and has become a priest in Kuta. Although he is still the licensee for Da Hui, No Fear and Aloha in Indonesia, surfing has taken a back seat to his temple duties and to family. Even though, Kasim still admits he will paddle out when the waves look absolutely perfect.
2008 ISC Pro Champion Dede Suryana (pictured here) explains the frontside snap 360: “Go in with a deep bottom turn, stay low, and when you see the lip coming push hard with your back leg and lift your body like you’re going to jump. Kick the board out with your back leg and it will follow you. The wave push helps you rotate the board around. Actually I was just going for a snap but pushed too hard and it went into a 360. Oh yeah, and wearing Power Balance helps too!” Photos by Tim Hain
Meanwhile, across the globe another tropical wave destination in South America, Ecuador, produces its own dramatic surf scenery. American surf photographer Carl Steindler elaborates: “These shots of Californian Scotty Hammonds (left) and Ecuador local Carlos Goncalves (right) were taken at the beach break of Ayampe, which gets really good and never too crowded. They say there is really good fishing off the rock in the background but we never tried.
“Our hotel on that beach cost us around US$5 a night with the coolest family ever. We found a huge tarantula in our room though… pretty friggin’ scary! This just happened to be one of the many offthe-radar spots that we surfed. There is so much potential in Ecuador it is ridiculous. You could literally surf this break all day everyday by yourself.” Carl highly reccommends Ayampe -- and even all of Ecuador’s coastline -- to all serious surfers and world travelers.

DEDE: “Lee’s ripping, boosting big airs. Not a lot of people can do that. Lee always does something crazy in his heats. When I surf with Lee, I get amped. We push each other. Even in contests too, when we are battling it out, we both want to win. If you win you can’t have a big head, and if you lose you practice harder for the next comp. I’m just following my dream, defending my title.”

Any heat against Dede I’ll have my guns ready because it’s going to be a tough one. It’s still early; everything could change with the next comp.”

Rip Curl went mobile for their West Sumbawa Pro, scouring the coast line for the best possible surf. Uncovered were a variety of hollow reef waves, lefts and rights, that turned on for this third ISC event. Rahtu Suargita narrowly missed a second victory in a row here and had to settle for runner up to on fire Raditya “Cabul” Rondi.

Kuta’s Marlon Gerber describes himself as a restaurant manager by night and a pro surfer by day. Today he is the manager of his family’s long-running Un’s Restaurant which has successfully existed on Poppies Lane I right in the middle of busy Kuta since 1989. As for his day job as a professional surfer, Marlon doesn’t overly worry about contest results or making the world tour, because he’s landed the dream job of being a freesurfer. This means making his own work hours finding the day’s best waves in Bali to shoot photos or film clips of him surfing for his sponsors Rusty, Gravis and Creatures. Could anything be better Marlon? “Yeah, I thought about doing the Jakarta-movie thing and making more money, but … I have a pretty good set up here and I wouldn’t change it. Not right now anyway!”

Rip Curl went mobile for their West Sumbawa Pro, scouring the coast line for the best possible surf. Uncovered were a variety of hollow reef waves, lefts and rights, that turned on for this third ISC event.

LEE: “Dede rips, I know he rips. He won the Sanur contest, where I knew it could be him or me. I think we surf a lot alike, we don’t like surfing safe, and we take risks. It’s like rolling the dice. Any heat against Dede I’ll have my guns ready because it’s going to be a tough one. It’s still early; everything could change with the next comp.”

WILL THIS BE YOUR FAVORITE WAVE IN 2020??? Didn’t think so! Find out how you can help play a role at www.rolefoundation.org
