MARLON GERBER WINS 3rd ANNUAL “GOOD VIBRATIONS” SINGLE FIN RETRO CLASSIC AT TUGU BEACH, CANGGU

The crew from Drifter, Insight and Mantra threw another great bash at Tugu Beach in Canggu for the 3rd Annual Good Vibrations event. Luke Studer shaped a quiver of retro single fins for the competitors to ride, and there were stingers, winged tails, pin tails guns and fun singles on hand to ride. No leash was the rule and rides were judged on style and flair. In the end the 6-man final was won by Marlon Gerber over Ellis Ericson in 2nd (last year’s winner), Tai Graham in 3rd, Joe Desantis, and Canggu local surfers Sodok and Riman. The first place prize was a hand-shaped board by Terry Fitzgerald who was also at the event.

As the day progressed different DJs and bands took to the stage, filling the air at Tugu Beach with music as the food booths served mouth-watering dishes by Mantra. A lucky draw was held with prizes of surfboards, sunglasses, and more goodies and as the day ended everyone was leaving with a glowing smile after feeling the Good Vibrations all day long.

The ASC Tour was treated to beautiful island style on Simeulue Island off of Aceh, Sumatra for event #5, the Aceh International Surfing Championship. This island is still very undeveloped with farm animals roaming the streets, fields upon fields of trees and plants, and yes, perfect waves. Wikipedia only has about six sentences about Simeulue, not much at all. The contest site was held at The Peak at Nancala Beach and the wave was a perfect left-right peak that threw out barrels and wide open walls for the ASC surfers to enjoy. In the end Dede Suryana won the 4-man Final in the sunset glow, riding long righthanders that he comboed mercilessly to the beach. Watch the video to see what we mean... Pure paradise... RADITYA RONDI LEADS ASC TOUR GOING INTO LAST EVENT

Even with missing the first event due to a knee injury, the 2012 ASC and ISC Champion Raditya Rondi from Kuta Beach is back on top and leading by a good margin going into the last event of the year in Taiwan. Being an ASP World Qualifying Series event the Taitung Taiwan open of Surfing will showcase not just Asia’s top surfers, but also the world’s top surfers competing for valuable World Championship Tour points. Competition will be stiff with an ASC title race on hand. Rondi went down on Day 1 of the Siargao Surfing Cup (Event #6) in pumping Cloud 9 that was later won by Putra Hermawan (below), shooting Putra up to #4 on the tour going into Taiwan and leaving a shot at the title for Made Widiarta in 2nd place and Dede Suryana in 3rd. STUFF ON BALI MOTORBIKES

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty amazing what people can fit on motorbikes in Indonesia. Here it is a way of life, although in other parts of the world you might not be allowed to drive your motorbike with so much loaded on it. Can you imagine the bike below dragging the plastic sheet through traffic in America or Australia? These are just a few of the many examples of ingenuity people use here to transport goods by motorbike in Indonesia. There are of course many more items like goats, dogs, glass windowpanes, furniture and more that make the art of motorbike-carrying a subject worthy of a book project.

The orangutan is one of the rare few Indonesian words that are used in the English language. Coming from Orang Hutan, or “Forest People” as the Indonesian words translate to, orangutans are indigenous to Indonesia and the two species in Sumatra and Borneo are becoming very rare, almost extinct, and high up on the endangered list. Photojournalist and surfer Andryz Adisyahwarman from Jakarta was in Borneo, or Kalimantan as it is now known, working on an orangutan documentary. “It was a privilege to cover a very protected and endangered species in Indonesia, namely the orangutan. Under Cosmorama Production by Freddy Hendyside, a team consisting of Ivan Handoyo, Arvid Nicholas, and myself, Andryz Adisyahwarman, got a chance to cover and make a video documentary called “Orangutan Rescue and Release” in East and Central Kalimantan for almost 2 weeks. The mission is to save and rehabilitate the Orangutan from their shrinking environment due to the interests of the palm oil industry and deforestation. After that they are released back to nature in a forest habitat suitable for them. BoSF (Borneo orangutan Survival Foundation) is a foundation that handles orangutan conservation. “There are two centers for orangutan re-introduction, the Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan and Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan.
