It’s kind of a trip to think that in the blink of an eye it’s been five years of publishing Lines magazine. Some groms that were in the pages back when we started in 2009 are now competing fulltime at an adult pro level around Indonesia and the world, making names for themselves and for the great country they are from, Indonesia. But that is the great dilemma pro surfers have here, whether to chase the World Tour Dream or just live comfortably in Indonesia, surfing the best waves in the world and making arguably as much or more money as they would chasing tour qualifying points overseas. But money is not everything and you have to remember the whole reason why we started surfing in the first place: the unexplainable feeling of riding a wave that you couldn’t wait to do again. And when you are talking about surfing Indonesian waves, you are talking about high-quality hollow reef waves that look like they came right out of a magazine. Brad Masters knows this and that’s why this issue is dedicated to both those perfectly spinning barrels Indonesia is famous for that Brad has been visiting and also to the surfers on the Asian Surfing Championship Tour who are traveling, surfing and making famous names for themselves while enjoying the best waves at home too. -- Lorca

BONES OF THE DARK MOON NOVEL by RICHARD E. LEWIS
Richard E. Lewis was born in Bali, Indonesia to American missionaries. As a nine-year-old boy in Klungkung, Bali he was an eyewitness to the events surrounding the massacres of 1965 and the effect they had and still have on his neighbors and friends. After graduating from American university, Richard returned to Bali, where he now lives with his wife and family, dedicating his time to writing, surfing and researching further novels. MISSING is a new film project directed by worldrenowned filmmaker Taylor Steele that takes Mick Fanning out of the competition world of the ASP and drops him square into reality. About MISSING Fanning explained, “I wanted to work with Taylor and was trying to come up with a concept, but it all got too hard, I didn’t need another thing to concentrate on as my life can be so regimented at times that I just said to him, you know what? You surprise me. I’ll give you 21 days in July between events and whatever you want to do, I’m up for it.” In the wilds of Africa, Steele linked Fanning up with local Jordy Smith and his long time Rip Curl teammate Matt Wilkinson. In Ireland, he walked into a pub where his best mate Taylor Knox and wife Karissa were waiting with a pint of Guinness. In an undisclosed location, a chopper arrived and flew him and John John Florence to a secluded right hand reef for the day. In another jungle, waiting under a palm tree, off a big right peak, was the enigmatic Tom Curren. As a result the surfing is special and some of the best you’ll see on screen this year. Taylor Steele says Mick Fanning was one of the best subjects he’s ever worked with “Knowing Mick, there’s a lot of layers to him that are not usually portrayed in the media and this is a great opportunity to show people what a great guy he is and what a great traveller he is too. I’m proud of the piece,” commented Steele.

MAS T E R C LAS S An expose- and story on surf photography by Brad Masters Indo has been known for a long time as the “Land of Perfect Waves�. For most people that means 4 to 6 feet peeling barrels left or right depending on your stance. The more time you spend living in Indonesia and looking for surf like the old days with nautical charts and old school weather maps, the more your eyes start to open up to new possibilities. The last two to three years Mikala Jones and myself have been doing just that and there are some amazing rewards out there. Strike missions to new wave areas is never easy and you must expect a few fail attempts along the way. Of course when all the elements do come together and you have the right crew with you, the boys will always score. waves, having the right crew is key. On some recent trips we where able to get just that with Dean “Dingo” Morrision , Cale “ Griggy “ Grigson, Ian Walsh, Luke Davis and of course, Mikala Jones scoring some classic Indonesian waves. With a bunch of different swells showing up on the charts the first mission was called upon a heaving bombie style right with a crazy backdoor section. Just to get to this wave was a two-day trip with all the normal delays you grow to expect in Indo. All this just makes you even more excited in anticipation on what you are going to find. One thing about these waves is that you are never the first to surf them and definitely not the last. But being out there on certain prime conditions gives you the feeling of surfing this wave at its best. With a new boat under his control, “The Raja Elang”, Tony “Doris” Eltherington is the man out in these waters and having him as our captain made the task of us scoring this mysto wave even the more possible. Waking up to the boat motoring thru the early hours
of the morning could only mean one thing - we were off to check what we had come out here for. On first sight of this wave words would not explain what we saw break in front of us. The boys were keen to get wet and just enjoy this feeling of being out in the middle of the ocean on a desert island with worldclass waves but they did have this to say: Mikala Jones: “This is the real deal and I have never seen a wave look like this in Indo. Let’s get out there!” Dean Morrison: “These are the best waves I have ever seen in Indo and I just got my best barrel of my life”, (big call from a guy who now chases big perfect waves around the world) Cale Grigson: “Sure enough the guru was right we awoke to chunky nugs scattered up and down the reef spewin’ their guts out.” Over the next 2 days we were lucky enough to have been at this spot on the right time on the right day and witness this. We were the only guys out there

within a few hundred miles from the nearest other people surfing. All good things must come to an end and once the new front came through, it was time to draw anchor and motor off and leave us with our memories of the last two days.
swell was something totally different. This swell was so raw and powerful it was a sight to behold. The old saying of “Only a surfer knows the feeling” really plays out at a spot like this. Once in your lifetime it is worth the effort to see Nias 10 feet.
Even though the swell was dropping, the charts were lighting up again and the call was made to keep this trip alive. Emails were sent out and teasers of what we had just scored were shown and just like that, we had another crew to keep on going. With already such a good season in play, the next round looked like the swell of swells and was seeming to be the icing on the cake. With the report looking so good the decisions were made and plane tickets bought. Nias was the call. A swell like this doesn’t happen very often so you really need to drop everything and just go for it. Mikala and I seem to spend most our days looking for swells like this and after a few phone calls it is always easy to rally up a team.
The crazy thing about chasing waves is that it really doesn’t matter what else you have going on around you at the time, the only thing on your mind is this one thing, scoring. It does sound selfish and childish, but on the other hand anyone else out here would be having the time of their life. We were here for one thing and one thing only, and once we score, job done. What we do is a job. The amount of money, time, and effort that goes into these strike missions is what most people work in a normal 9-5 job.

The feeling you have when the job is done and we got what we came for is the best feeling in the world. With all the elements coming together we were all blessed by the surf gods. The boys had scored.

Brad Masters reckons the Nias trip in October he scored was about as good as he had ever seen The Point at Lagundri. It was definitely the biggest he’d ever seen it and he goes several times a year.

INDONESIA’S FIRST SURFER 38

In the 1930s American Bob Koke opened the first hotel on Kuta Beach. He was also the first surfer ever in Indonesia and later on as a CIA agent in Bali, helped win against the Japanese in World War II. Nigel Simmonds is Editor of The Yak magazine and also enjoys surfing in Bali where he was one of the last people to ever interview Koke on a trip back to spread his late wife’s ashes. Here is what Nigel told Lines about meeting Indonesia’s First Surfer: It’s not often you meet a guy like Bob Koke. When I did, in 1993, he was already an old man, but that didn’t stop him from opening a bottle of Johnny Walker he’d bought at duty free on his way through the airport at Ngurah Rai. He was here to scatter the ashes of his wife into the sea off Kuta Beach. It had been her dying wish you see – Bob and Louise had opened the first hotel there back in the ’30s, and I guess it had been the most special time in her life. As we drank and chatted late into the
afternoon, I could see why. Bob and Louise had been married for 50 years. He spoke about how they had met and fallen into an affair, eloping to Bali from Hollywood to this beautiful tropical island that was just being discovered, far away from their past lives . . . a perfect place for their newly found love. I knew about Bob because I read his wife’s book “Our Hotel In Bali”, about how they came to the island and started

Rip Curl brought something for everyone in two full day’s of fun at their GromSearch National Final at Kuta Beach, Bali. Besides surfing there were also bowling and archery games to win prizes, and a Surfboard Test Drive center offering Firewires and DHD Rip Curl boards to be taken for a surf around the contest. And of course there was also an Expression Session and Tag-Team Event to keep the adult pros busy. This year the Rip Curl GromSearch contests were the only events on the ASC Junior Division with more contests (10 total) around Indonesia than any other ASC Divison. This is a sign of Indonesian Junior surfing today, a movement that is growing by leaps and bounds each year with young talent pools of grommet surfers on each island with surf that are progressing more and more each year,especially with the help of events like the GromSearch. Every year the National Champion of the GromSearch wins a free trip to Australia to compete in the International GromSearch Championships against the world’s best junior surfers. Opportunities to win trips like these are quite rare here and one that is very important to training the Indonesian juniors to take their surfing to the next level. In the end it would be Raju Sena from Padma Beach, Legian who would take top honors, winning the GromSearch and the trip to Australia over 60 of Indonesia’s top Under 16 Junior surfers. dAY 1 - GROM SEARCH #9

MADE RADITYA RONDI from Kuta Beach, Bali has set a new record by claiming his third consecutive Asian Surfing Championship title and second Indonesian title this year in Taiwan. Even though he missed the first ASC Mentawai event due to a knee injury, Raditya still came back full force, winning two of the next 3 events in a row on his 2013 ASC Championship Title campaign. You could call him a contest machine, a gifted competitor, or lucky, but the fact of the matter is that Raditya straight up rips in any surf he paddles out in and this shines through in and out of the contest arena. New school, old school, carves barrels and airs, frontside and back, he’s got one of those unpredictable surfing styles that makes every wave he rides fresh to watch. Check out his freesurfing clips in the video “Indo” by Sean Gilhooley for proof of how hard he surfs outside of the contest jersey. Here is what Raditya had to say about winning Asia’s only unified surfing tour, the Asian Surfing Championship. How do you prepare for a contest? We had 7 contests this year and every location is a different type of wave so I usually try to surf a lot at the contest spot to know the wave better and try different boards to see what is best. And most of all, I try to have fun. You said you hurt your knee bad this year? It was at Keramas, the end of the Wet Season, that day was 5 to 6ft clean pumping, and I did that on my second wave. I was in the barrel and I was too deep then the foamball hit me then I fell on the top of my board and my knee hit my board so hard. After that I went in, I tried to walk but my knee hurt so bad, and I checked my board and there was a big ding and almost snapped. I was so surprised. I rested for 2 weeks, I tried to surf a little bit and I went to physiotherapy and felt better so I went to Sumbawa for 5 days just for a surf trip. I surfed a lot up there and my knee felt bad, it was defi-
nitely hurt again. When I got back to Bali I went to hospital and they just tell me to rest more, and I did that. I feel alright now but still not 100%. Lately I’ve been doing some training and Pilates three times a week. I hope my knee is good by next year. What’s your opinion on the young Indonesian surfers today? The young Indonesian surfers surf so good right now, they can do airs they surf good on the reef breaks, I hope they can travel around the world do contests and make it to the WCT. My advice to them is keep focus, surf a lot more, stay humble and have fun! What’s up for next year?! I want to enter more contests next year, maybe going to do couple of WQS. I wanna go to China, Japan, Australia, I just wanna go on trips more and surf more because this year I was resting a lot and didn’t get enough surf..

Raju Sena won this year’s Junior Title over Riman Jayadi by the narrowest of margins, a mere 17 points higher, by winning the Rip Curl GromSearch. Had Raju placed any lower than first in that event, he would have had to settle for a 2nd place finish. But backing down is never an option, and Raju is no stranger to the podium because of it and has already won many junior titles before. Keep your eye on this Junior Champ from Padma.

The powerful goofyfoot surfer girl from Nias traveled to all the events this year and although she didn’t win the Asian title, she had accumulated enough points to win the Indonesian title. Still on top after all these years, chances are good that next year she may just make it seven titles!

The Master Division this year came down to one event, the Balangan Pro in July. Blitzing through a crew of seasoned veteran and legend surfers, Wayan “Kopling” Wirtama (wearing blue) broke out solid carves and lined turns together to the #1 podium spot and was frothing for the next event. Unfortunately there was only one event, but next year is lighting up already for a more extensive Master Division schedule.
