FRAME OF MIND
“Here is a shot my friend took on a trip we did last summer. Line ups like this made me fall in love with Indonesia. That’s why I wanted to come back so bad for my internship. Lines gave me this opportunity and it was such a great experience. I’m not sure that there are a lot of places where you can work and score perfect waves at the same time really often, and where some of your assignment are the morning surf report everyday hahaha. Thanks Lorca for everything. I’ll be back!“ -- Tinou Landes, Lines Intern Photo: Yentl Touboul

Chasing waves is not an easy thing to do. Time, money and mother nature cooperating are the three ingredients needed to score good surf, but more than anything, time is the main thing. Surfing is all about timing to catch those windows of prime conditions when certain spots will be breaking at their finest. Some waves take an hour or more to get to one way, and even then may be really good for less than an hour before you face the hour drive home. It’s a labor of love chasing waves, one that surfing is all about. If it all came easily it wouldn’t be as rewarding, and there is nothing better than knowing that you are scoring at a spot surfing world class waves that look like they came straight out of a surfing magazine. During the Indonesian Wet Season while most people were surfing Hawaii or chasing big waves in Europe or California, there were still some epic sessions going down right here in the off season. Living through the wet season is not so bad, especially when you know that what you’re surfing is still just as good as anywhere, and warm too. -- Lorca

INDONESIA GETS VOLCANIC
19 volcanos in Indonesia were placed on Eruption Alert since this January and two more, Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra and Mount Kelud in East Java have since erupted causing fatalities, closing airports and displacing people in their respective areas. Just another friendly reminder that we are surfing in the Ring of Fire.

SURFER GIRL SPEAKS OUT AGAINST VIOLENCE ON WOMEN
Did you know that there were 472 domestic violence and sexual abuse cases toward women and children across Indonesia in 2012? This was reported by the Bali branch of the Community Service Center for the Protection of Women and Children (P2TP2A Bali). Most of these cases previously remained unreported due to the restrain of local culture and stigma. Cases like these led to the formation of ‘One Billion Rising’, an international campaign that aims to end violence against women, and promote gender equality. Since 2007, this campaign has grown into a mass global action, joined by more than 190 countries. Since 2013, the ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign has also gained massive support and recognition in Indonesia. This year on Feb. 14, Valentines Day, Surfer Girl proudly joined the movement by holding a “Break The Chain” flash mob public dance by around 50 Surfer Girl staff – female and male – outside their Jalan Legian 138 store. The idea was to create public awareness of this campaign. Surfer Girl was the sole representative from Bali for the ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign in Indonesia. Domestic violence incidents towards Balinese women sadly remains high.
UTAMA SPICE NATURAL PRODUCTS USE NO PALM OIL
Many all-natural companies still use chemicals and other chemical additives in their skin products and still call themself a natural product. Not Utama Spice who prides itself on being as natural as possible, more so than many other similar companies, and they don’t use Palm Oil in their products (which many natural companies do), helping save the rainforests and orang utans in the process. Guardian Pharmacy outlets around Indonesia now proudly carry Utama Spice products, as do the Four Seasons Hotel, Uluwatu Surf Villas, and more. Recently they released their all-natural handsoap (greywater safe). Their regular range includes incense, soaps, skin lotions, bug sprays and more made from Indonesian family recipes that use only naturally grown ingredients. www.utamaspicebali.com

GEGER BEACH, NUSA DUA, BEFORE AND AFTER
Geger lines. Photo: Curley

Geger Beach used to be one of Bali’s most famous white sand beaches for sun tanning, hanging out, and surfing. It still is today, although the stretch of beach has been cut into only a fraction of what it used to be by a new massive hotel development that has changed the landscape beyond recognition. It’s not until you see the Google Earth photos from above that you really notice the change. More and more sprawling hotel projects continue to be built in the area from Nusa Dua across the south Bukit coast to Uluwatu to cater to Bali’s growing tourism. In the bigger picture, most of Bali is being rapidly developed every day. If you do find that special empty beach or part of virgin Bali you love, make sure to take pictures because chances are it might not look the same the next time you come back.
