I’ve known Falkwyn Goyeneche for about 20 years since our early days at Bali International School. He’s one of my more creative close friends and since he moved to Spain and purchased a Hasselblad camera, photography has become his passion. I’m constantly amazed at the images he captures and I am grateful that he allowed me to share some of his work in Lines. These pictures really say Bali to me and I love the black and white uncropped format. At the top is a melasti purification ceremony at Padang Padang, and below, a Balinese dance class. To the right is a hike he went on to the top of the holy Mount Agung. You can check out more of his select shots at www.falkwyn.com

The LINES opening night went off at the Black Dog in Seminyak on July 24th. Along with live music performances and the Pixels on Paper surf photography exhibition, it was a truly memorable Bali night. Thank you all for the support in making LINES a reality.

21 year old Sunshine Coast Australian Julian Wilson is a surfer that grommets and old guys alike can’t help but notice in the water. Whether he’s landing his self-named rodeo and superman combo air called the Sushi Roll, or pulling into thick tubes, Julian stands out in a big way. At the 2007 Surfer Magazine Poll & Video Awards he won Best Male Performance in Young Guns 3 over peers like Dane Reynolds and Andy Irons. He’s not officially after a WCT spot yet but earlier this year as a wildcard entry he beat Kelly Slater at the Quiksilver Pro in Australia. During a recent Bali trip Jason Childs photographed Julian going huge in local surf with a full-spin alley oop (left) and a board-free lip blast (right). Julian is working on his own surf film scheduled for next year, so stay tuned.

ANNUAL INVITATIONAL AUGUST 15

Padang Padang, Bali

Jamie O’Brien proved he is a super freak, scoring four perfect 10 scores on his way to victory at the Rip Curl Cup. Bali’s two-time Rip Curl Cup champion, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, put up his own stylish charge but O’Brien’s streak was unstoppable through the final. Padang, the Balinese Pipeline, is a fickle wave but with only a day needed for the contest and the whole prime surf month of August reserved, all the crew had to do was wait. Sure enough, a colored swell map bloomed and sent a seasonal bomb Padang swell over for the 32 competitors from Australia, Hawaii, Spain, Indonesia, the US, and Brazil. To date the Rip Curl Cup was Indonesia’s contest of the year at Bali’s best wave. It is also the longest running contest in Indonesia, now in its sixth year. Most of Bali found out about the contest and the beach was packed with fans watching the perfectly groomed double overhead drain pipes being ridden all day. 6 STAR ISC EVENT #4 Bali’s favorite performance wave, Pererenan in Canggu, broke everyday almost maxing out for the finals, giving competitors a variety of conditions to work with. Mustofa Jekson was in tune 100%, pulling big floaters and sharp turns that led to his first ISC career final and victory. Dedi Santoso was ripping the whole event but couldn’t find any cooperation from the ocean in the final. Mustofa was overjoyed as he accepted his trophy, being showered with congratulation on the beach. Legend Ketut Menda won his second comp in a row after the Rip Curl Cup. Dede

So here we are and it’s September. As we charge down the home stretch of the 2009 ISC tour season with more comps behind us than ahead of us, the momentum is building with plenty of excitement and drama on tap as the race for the 2009 ISC championship remains wide open. As it stands, last year’s ISC champion Dede Suryana’s bout with Dengue Fever kept him out of the recent Oakley Pro at Canggu, but it was lucky for him that Lee Wilson bowed out in the fourth round. Lee now has the number one spot with three events remaining, but both surfers still have a good shot at the title, remembering that the lowest two event scores are dropped at the end of the year. Lee won’t likely want to settle for a runner up spot again this year, instead intent on reclaiming the title he lost to Dede last year.

The Rote Open and the Quiksilver Open are both 6-star prime events, and the Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival is a 6 star, so there are still thousands of points left on offer to top seeds in their run for the crown. This will be especially good experience for Suryana as he prepares to endure However…with Mustofa Jeksen and “The Grind” next year, thanks to his Raditya Rondi each winning their first new sponsors Quiksilver and Coca-CoISC tour event this season, and Dedi la. “The Grind” is the term often used Santoso having two runner up finishes, to describe the World Qualifying Series Dede and Lee will be feeling a lot of (WQS), the tour in which only the top pressure to pull out all the stops to beat 16 among the hundreds participating these young chargers in the next three move up to the elite World Championevents. It sure will be fun to watch! ship Tour (WCT) each year. 37

DREAMLAND was what this beautiful beach was named around 1990 by a tightknit group of Bali surfers who had the reef peak and punchy shorebreak surf figured out. The Euro crowd followed and Dreamland became a sheik beach hang out with quaint sandside warungs popping up as the word spread. As the masses caught on it became the site for a major Indonesian development project that turned the area into a residence complete with golf course and a towering beachside club. The name was also officially changed and what was Dreamland is now known to the world as New Kuta.

As much as we claim to know the ocean it is still a very mysterious and powerful place. Scientists profess to know more about outer space than the depths of the ocean. To the Balinese it is traditionally not a place for sport, but one that is a source of food, and a place of ceremony. Opinions and attitudes are changing these days, especially with the wide range of water sports like surfing that people enjoy here. Whether you follow Balinese beliefs or not, one thing is certain; the ocean is a place deserving total respect and caution. Sometimes you are reminded of this when a charger like Jamie Patten (left), who mistimed a late drop recovery, suffered a dislocated shoulder. Other times it is a call to inexperienced human judgment -- as in the case of these unfortunate water police (right) trying to race out to Keramas over a shallow reef section instead of the usual channel entry. Either way you take it, it’s safe to say that nature makes the last call.
