FOREWORDS Dear fellow disciples, I want to begin by congratulating you for making a wise and important commitment in your life. The commitment you are making will be both physically and mentally challenging. Nevertheless, along the way, I sincerely believe that you will achieve the goals that you set. Success will be sweet and well earned. I created this manual with the intention to combine important training materials for you. Often, when exam sheets and other important materials, such as technical terminologies and Vovinam anthem, were passed out separately in class, they were replaced because the students claimed lost. By putting everything in a student manual and since each student is required to purchase it, it is his/her responsibility to keep it from lost or he/she would have to purchase another manual. Because this is your manual, use it and take good care of it. Put your name on it and bring it to class. Write notes on it if you must in order to learn. Feel free to make copies of the exam sheets and other materials as needed. I want express many thanks and appreciations to a number of dedicated individuals whose ideas are invaluable to the betterment of community and society through the promotion of Vovinam – Viet Vo Dao. First, I want to give thanks to my wife; she is the best part of my life and is a true partner and best friend. Secondly, I want to give thanks to all fellow Vovinam brothers and sisters over the years, those I have come to know and cherish our relationships. Thirdly, I want to dedicate all of my works to Grand Master Lê Sáng. His honorable and humble life has been a great example for all of us to follow. His martial arts knowledge and wisdom are truly the beacons for the future generations of Vovinam, worldwide. I am honored and thankful for the following Vovinam masters who have been my teachers and mentors: Master Trần Hữu Tuấn-Anh, Master Nguyễn Văn Sen, Master Tô Văn Vượng, Master Trần Nguyên Ðạo, Master Lê Công Danh, Master Nguyễn Thị Cẩm Bình, Masters Huỳnh Trọng Tâm and Thu-Hà, Master Tống Hùng Phi, Master Patrick Levett, Master Nguyễn Văn Chiếu, and Master Trần Ðại Chiêu. Ultimately, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my family and my students who give me life, love, pride and most important of all – HOPE!
SHORT HISTORY OF VOVINAM-VIETVODAO Master Nguyen Loc founded the Martial Arts Discipline of Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao in 1938. He grew up in the period in which Vietnam was still under the French colonial rule. At that time, young men either were seduced by the French into the lusty lives or joined the revolutionary war against the French. Master Nguyen Loc believed that the only way to free Vietnam from the colonial rule was to train the Vietnamese young men to have a strong, invincible will for liberty and independence. This willpower must be produced by a strong body and a rational mind. Carrying on that belief, he practiced hardly and researched many Vietnamese traditional martial arts as well as many foreign martial arts. After his research, he founded a new discipline of martial arts, which he named "VOVINAM", understood as the "MARTIAL ARTS OF VIETNAM." Since 1964, the new title "VIET VO DAO" ("THE PHILOSOPHY OF VIETNAMESE MARTIAL ARTS") was added to become "VOVINAM-VIET VO DAO." In 1960, before passing away, Founder promoted his most senior student, Master Le Sang, to become the Grand Master. Since then, under the leadership of Grand Master Le Sang, Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao becomes international martial arts with more than one million practitioners around the world. Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao carried out its roles with the following purposes: 1. Preserve and develop the martial arts of Vietnam, applying the "Hard-Soft Co development". 2. Research and innovate new martial arts' techniques to improve Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao's technical resources. 3. Train disciples on the Strength, Techniques, and Philosophy Strength: Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao will train disciples to have a solid body and strong endurance against obstacles and diseases. Techniques: Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao will train disciples to have practical techniques for selfdefense and just causes. Philosophy: Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao will train disciples to have a rational mind, an invincible will, and a gallant character. Disciples will be living in a self-disciplined and forgiving way and become model citizens, and serve oneself, one's family, one's state, and mankind. To achieve the above purposes, Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao follows five objectives: 1. All the functions of Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao are based on an established foundation: take Mankind as the end, take Characters as the goals, and take Invincible Will as the means. 2. Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao is an extended family, in which disciples love and respect one another. The respect and love will be the discipline of Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao, which will help the disciples to unite and honor the uprightness of Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao, serving mankind. 3. Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao actively participates in the education of young men and women. 4. Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao is independent of political and religious influence. 5. Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao always respects other disciplines of martial arts.

RULES OF CONDUCT AT VO-DUONG PAY ATTENTION SALUTE UPON ENTERING & LEAVING SALUTE TO INSTRUCTORS/MASTERS COME TO CLASS REGULARLY AND TIMELY LEAVE ALL NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS OUTSIDE
THE MEANING OF VOVINAM’S SALUTE A salute is a way in which friendly people greet one another using a gesture. Each society has its own unique way of doing this. In America and other Western cultures, the salute is often understood with a wave of the hand (either right or left) and/or a handshake. In the martial arts community, there are many ways for martial artists of various styles to greet and/or pay respect to each other and their instructors. For VOVINAM discipline, the way a student salutes to another student and to his/her instructor is described as followed: 1. The student will raise the upper right arm parallel to the ground and elbow bent upward, thus allowing the lower right arm to be perpendicular to the ground. The left arm is rested along the left side. 2. The student’s right hand and fingers are fully extended pointing to the sky, palm facing outward (step 1 & 2 are much similar to witnesses and public officials are being sworn in during trials or public office). 3. The student will bring his/her right hand to the left chest, below the heart, palm facing inward (body). 4. The student will bend down in a sharp, but in slow – moderate speed, with his/her eyes still maintaining contact with fellow student(s) and/or instructor(s). All VOVINAM’s students are required to salute when: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Coming in and prior to leaving the martial arts school (vo-duong), Facing a higher ranking disciple(s), Facing an instructor or master, Facing with a training partner during training session(s), and Recognizing each other and/or instructor(s) in public
The right hand symbolizes an individual’s strength or power and his/her ability to utilize that strength and power. By yielding such strength or power to the heart, the student recognizes and reminds him/herself that he/she must always apply strength and power with loving intention, with humility and kindness. It is vitally important for VOVINAM’s disciples of all ranks to always remember and apply the essence of the VOVINAM’s salute in his/her everyday life activity. By doing so, he/she will gain and develop friendships and respects from others, thus creating crucial and positive environment that fosters teamwork and success.
HOW TO TIE THE BELT PREPARATION: Dip the belt into water and hang dry. Do not put the belt in the dryer because it will harden the belt’s fabric, thus make it harder to tie. INSTRUCTION: 1. Place ¼ of the belt (Viet Vo Dao side) on the rightside of the waist; 2. Wrap the rest of the belt around the waist twice (or once if the belt is too short or three times if the belt is too long); 3. Adjust the belt so that the two ends align with each other by shifting the entire belt to the left or right; 4. Loop the one end that is on top over-and-under all the layers; 5. Adjust the two ends once more; 6. Place the upper end over the left of the under end, creating a loop and pull the upper end of the belt through this loop; 7. Pull hard both ends of the belt simultaneously. The VOVINAM’s end of the belt will be on the left of the student and the Viet Vo Dao’s end will be on the right of the student. However, to the opposite viewer, VOVINAM will be on the right and Viet Vo Dao on the left – exact to the order of historical development of these two terms. By practicing to tie the belt in this fashion, the belt will stay on and will not be undone easily. Constant practice will also ensure the the two ends of the belt will always be equal in length; thus, the student demonstrates a high degree of self-respect, pride in the uniform and pride in the martial arts discipline.
VOVINAM’s Vow and Ten Principles VOVINAM’S VOW: The Vovinam Vow is to be memorized by all students at the promotion of Dark Blue belt in addition to other technical and philosophy requirements. The Vow must be administered under the formal witness and approval of appropriate authorities of VOVINAM – VIET VO DAO. In front the national flag, representing the unyielding and everlasting spirit of our people, In front of Viet Vo Dao flag, representing courageous and noble tradition of the martial artist, In front of our Founder's portrait, representing the benevolence and generosity of the youth with the nation and humanity, We, newly sworn disciple, pledge to follow the examples of our Founder: • • •
To live chastely and honorably To temper our will To practice diligently
In order to: • • •
Protect our nation's honor Serve our community and humanity Build next generation of Vovinam Youth
TEN PRINCIPLES: As a VOVINAM - VietVoDao Disciple, I shall: 1.
