The world-famous Red Arrows display team have confirmed they will return to Blackpool this summer to perform on both days of the annual Blackpool Air Show. They will be joined on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August by the RAF Typhoon display team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who are also confirmed for both days of the free event. Last year, the Air Show was one of the region’s biggest events, attracting an estimated 350,000 people to the Promenade over the two days.
The Red Arrows, one of the world's foremost aerial aerobatic display teams will perform a brand new display high above the seafront opposite The Blackpool Tower.
After announcing the Blackpool dates, Squadron Leader Jon Bond, Team Leader and Red 1, said: “Blackpool, with tens of thousands of people lining the coastline, always gives the warmest of welcomes during the Air Show weekend.
“The event is always very popular and, as a team, we’re humbled to see these big crowds enjoying our display.
“This year, we invite people to join with us to help celebrate the Red Arrows’ 60th Diamond Season.
“Appropriately, the team’s preparing a trademark Diamond Nine formation for the 2024 show, with many fresh manoeuvres and special shapes featuring in this new display.”
The weekend show will also feature a whole host of incredible flying machines with the full programme of civil and military aircraft to be confirmed in coming weeks.
To complement the aerial programme, there will be plenty to see and do on the ground with a wide range of stalls, attractions and food concessions in the Air Show Village between Central Pier and the Tower Festival Headland. Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council,
said: “We are thrilled to announce that the Red Arrows will perform their diamond anniversary display on both days of our Air Show.
“Last year’s event demonstrated the extraordinary pulling power of not just the Reds, but also the magnificent Typhoon display team and Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight.
“We can’t wait for what will be another very special weekend in what is already turning into an action-packed calendar of free events in Blackpool during 2024.” For further information and to book accommodation and other entertainment during your stay in Blackpool go to www.visitblackpool.com
Over 2,200 trees have been procured through Fylde Council’s tree planting programme this financial year to expand tree canopy coverage across the borough, as community tree planting events continue to give Fylde residents the chance to pitch in and help spruce up their local spaces.
The Capital Programme 2023/24 approved in January 2024 invested £25,000 of revenue to improving tree coverage through Fylde, supplemented by an additional £9,000 brought forward from the previous year. Fylde Council’s Parks and Coastal Services staff have been working in close partnership with Town and Parish Councils and community groups to identify suitable land areas for large-scale planting.
The Ranger Service and Arboricultural Team, alongside community groups, will be leading on the planting throughout Lytham, St Annes, Kirkham, Elswick, Newton, Treales and Freckleton over the coming weeks to ensure all trees are planted before spring.
Cllr Tommy Threlfall, Lead Member for Environment, said: “I’m firmly in favour of Fylde Council securing this budget and continuing our programme of tree planting throughout the borough. By working with our partners, we’re
demonstrating our green values and our commitment to bettering the environment for everyone’s benefit. I myself took part in planting in my home of Freckleton and it was a pleasure to work with the Parish Council and the members of Freckleton in Bloom.”
Tree canopy coverage is a useful metric for measuring the number of trees in areas across the country. Urban trees provide great benefits for people and communities, offering contact with the natural world and helping alleviate stress and ease anxiety, as well as providing a pleasing setting for exercise, socialising, and recreation.
Trees form a vital element of the ecosystem, acting as a natural carbon sink through the absorption of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases from the environment,
improving air quality and assisting in addressing climate change. By providing habitats for a variety of birds, insects and other wildlife, tree coverage improves biodiversity and helps preserve the ecological stability of the natural world.
The trees chosen for planting as part of this programme, comprising over 40 different native species, have been carefully picked to provide a healthily mixed habitat for wildlife, as well as some ornamental species for planting in the more formal areas of parks.
If you would like to help and get your hands dirty, why not join us at our next public tree planting event. Follow our facebook page for more information.

With exam days and final assignment deadlines on the horizon, the need for students to stay focused and sharp has perhaps never been greater. Thankfully, employing a few trusted methods can see those keen to succeed fulfil their maximum potential.
Often pushed to the sidelines during exams, this actually plays a vital role in boosting brain function. Engaging in regular substantial activity like jogging, cycling or even brisk walking can enhance cognitive abilities.
The benefits of fresh air are equally significant. Spending time outdoors, away from the confines of a study room, can invigorate the mind. It’s a natural way to recharge and gain a new perspective, especially after hours of intense application.
Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains provides the necessary nutrients for brain health, playing a pivotal role in maintaining mental sharpness. Staying hydrated is also crucial.
For those who spend long hours on computers, it’s important to practice good screen hygiene and avoid eye strain, using proper lighting to reduce glare, as well
as maintaining an ergonomic posture to prevent physical strain. Additionally, using blue light filters on screens can help reduce the impact of blue light on sleep patterns.
Finally, perhaps the thing sacrificed most during exam times, adequate sleep is essential for memory consolidation and cognitive function. A regular sleep schedule not only improves focus but also enhances overall health.
He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how to make your garden a social hub.
In the world of gardening, we often see our green spaces as personal sanctuaries, reflections of our innermost selves. Yet amongst the greenery, there lies a hidden potential – the chance to turn these private retreats into vibrant social hubs, where relationships blossom and communities thrive.
Imagine a plot where the simple act of sitting down invites conversation. Seating, thoughtfully arranged under the shade of a tree or around the inviting warmth of a fire pit, becomes more than just a place to rest; it’s a setting for interaction.
birds singing and the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze.
Then, as evening gradually finds its way into proceedings, the garden dons its nocturnal robe. As the sun begins to disappear, it generates a soft lighting and that can sometimes cast something of a magical glow.
A garden bench or a collection of movable chairs can transform a solitary corner into a bustling social spot, encouraging discussions that range from the mundane to the profound. In this space, the traditional barriers of fences and hedges take on a new role as subtle invitations for neighbourly chats.
As the sun moves across the sky during the daytime, the garden will reveal its various moods and states and can look di erent in various settings. With the gentle morning light illuminating the lawn and its flowery cousins, that invites early risers to a nice tranquil start.
By the time we get to mid-morning and early afternoon, that’s when the garden really begins to buzz with life – quite literally. With bees humming,
Transforming pathways into golden trails and flowerbeds into pools of light, this gentle illumination isn’t just a functional one, it also sets a mood and an ambiance that encourages guests to linger, converse and stay longer under the stars.
With this social oasis created, any dining area will become more than solely just a place to eat, but also a communal gathering spot. A large table – maybe with a nearby grill or pizza oven – stands ready for shared meals, laughter and stories. This can attract repeat company.
Each season brings its own charm, its own reason for gathering, and its own story to tell. Let your garden be a demonstration to the power of shared spaces, where every leaf and bloom is a testament to the enduring beauty of human connection.
With one month to go until Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool, organisers Brian House Children’s Hospice has revealed one of the sculptures on the art trail.
Elmer Elaganza has been designed by interior designer and television presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and is one of more than 70 sculptures that will be in key locations around Blackpool inspired by David McKee’s popular children’s character Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.
Laurence, who is also Creative Curator of the Blackpool Illuminations, popped into Brian House to reveal his sculpture.
He said: “When I heard about Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool, I jumped at the chance to be part of it because I know what a wonderful thing it is for this incredible town.
“My sculpture is of course inspired by my passion and flair for interior design and floral patterns and I hope everyone who visits it as part of the art trail enjoys their own interpretation of Elmer Elaganza.
“I really enjoyed my visit to Brian House to reveal my sculpture and meet some of the amazing children and the staff who do so much for them. It’s really humbling to know that by being involved in this fabulous event I am supporting such a remarkable place that means
so much to local families on the Fylde coast.”
Elmer Elaganza, which is sponsored by VisitBlackpool, will be installed in a location yet to be announced, ready for the trail which starts on Saturday 13th April.
It will be on display for eight weeks, free for people to visit and collect a reward offered by Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool supporters and sponsors through a dedicated free trail app.
And the end of the trail, the sculpture will be auctioned off along with all other large sculptures to raise money for Brian House, the only children’s hospice on the Fylde coast.
Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Laurence has taken the time to design one of our Elmer sculptures. Elmer Elaganza is a real refection of Laurence and we’re sure thousands of people will feel the same when they visit his Elmer on the art trail.
“It was wonderful to welcome him into Brian House and show him the difference our art trail will make to local families, helping us to provide exceptional care to local children who are living with incredibly complex illnesses.
“Overall, we’re expecting our art trail to raise over £110,000 for our dedicated children’s hospice, and for Laurence to have used his creative expertise in this way is just amazing. We can’t wait to see who leaves our auction owning their very own, and very unique, original Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.”
Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool will run from 13th April to 9th June 2024. The art trail is supported by Presenting Partners Thompson Contracts and Ameon, Learning Programme Sponsor Tower Insurance and Official Supporters Shared Services Connected Ltd (SSCL), Beaverbrooks, Partington’s Holiday Parks, RSS Events and Blackpool Council.
Mary Berry’s gorgeous chocolate roulade is made without flour so it’s light as a feather. Add berries to the whipped cream filling to make a decadent gluten-free dessert.
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4. Lightly grease a 13in x 9in Swiss roll tin then line the base and sides of the tin with a large sheet of greaseproof paper, pushing it into the corners. Next, melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
2. Place the egg whites in a large bowl and whisk until sti but not dry. If you turn the bowl upside down, the whites should be sti enough not to fall out. Place the egg yolks in a separate bowl with the sugar and whisk on high speed for 2-3 minutes or until thick and creamy. Pour in the cooled chocolate and gently fold together until well combined.
3. Gently stir two large spoonfuls of the egg whites into the chocolate mixture to loosen the mix, then fold in the remaining egg whites using a large metal spoon (without squashing out the
air you’ve just beaten in). Sift in the cocoa and lightly fold it in. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until risen and the top feels firm and slightly crisp then remove from the oven and leave to cool.
4. Now whip the cream until it forms soft peaks when the whisk is removed. Next lay a large piece of greaseproof paper on the work surface and dust it lightly with icing sugar. Turn the roulade out on to the paper so its lining paper is on top, then carefully peel o the paper. Spread the roulade with the whipped cream, leaving a border of about 2cm all the way around the edges.
5. With one of the shortest edges facing you, make a cut along it with a sharp knife, going about halfway through the sponge to tighten the centre of the spiral. Now roll this cut edge over tightly and use the paper to help continue the tight rolling, by
• 175g good-quality dark chocolate, finely chopped
• 6 free-range eggs, yolk and white separated
• 175g caster sugar
• 2 tbsp cocoa powder
• 300ml double cream
• Icing sugar, to dust
• Strawberries, to serve
To help the paper fit snugly into the corners of the tin, make a small diagonal snip in each corner of the baking paper.
pulling it away from you as you roll. Don’t worry if the roulade cracks - that is quite normal and all part of its charm.
6. Finish with the join underneath then lift the roulade onto a serving plate or board using a large wide spatula. Dust with icing sugar and serve with strawberries.

An African History of Africa: From the Dawn of Civilisation to Independence by Zeinab Badawi Scientists believe that all humanity originated from Africa and this book is therefore for everyone.
For too long, Africa’s history has been neglected. Dominated by western narratives of slavery and colonialism, its past has been fragmented, overlooked and denied its rightful place in our global story.
Now, Zeinab Badawi guides us through Africa’s spectacular history, from the origins of humanity, through ancient civilisations and medieval empires with powerful queens and kings, to the miseries of conquest and the elation of independence.

Rebel Rising by Rebel Wilson From the scenestealing star of Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids comes a refreshingly candid, hilarious, and inspiring book about her unconventional journey to Hollywood success and loving herself.
For decades, Rebel Wilson had single-mindedly focused on her career, making a name for herself through her iconic roles. Now she’s ready to chronicle the emotional and physical lessons she learned, as well as her most embarrassing experiences. A malaria induced hallucination? An all-style-martial arts fighting tournament? Junior handling at dog shows? And this was all before she moved to Hollywood!
It’s all here. This memoir shows us how to love ourselves, while making us laugh uncontrollably. Published by Hodder & Stoughton on April 18th
The Jedi, traditionally peacekeepers, are now centralised in Coruscant, tackling galactic crises. When Qui-Gon Jinn criticizes their isolation, Mace Windu proposes that all twelve Jedi Masters visit Kwenn, a planet with a decommissioning Jedi Outpost, to reinforce the Jedi’s presence.
However, their visit sparks conflict, as pirate factions, empowered by the Jedi’s absence, plan to assassinate the Council to assert their control, even at the cost of innocent lives.
Isolated from Coruscant, the Jedi Masters must face a harsh reality: their focus on the future might have neglected those needing immediate help.

Explore five actionable and impactful methods to inspire and engage your local community in the journey towards
Community drives and initiatives
Organise regular litter-picking events in local parks, beaches and neighbourhoods. This not only helps in keeping these areas clean but also raises awareness about the importance of not littering. To increase participation, involve local schools, businesses and clubs.
Another thing you could do to promote community sustainability is by creating a shared compost pile. Pooling scraps enhances soil quality, benefiting everyone’s gardens and contributing to environmental health.
Volunteering
Every community o ers opportunities to participate in ecofriendly volunteer activities. Actively seek out initiatives that align with your commitment to sustainability. Should organised group events be limited, take the initiative to conduct a personal litter collection day.
Recycling workshops and facilities
Organise educational workshops to enlighten the community on recycling’s significance and techniques. Collaborate with local authorities to enhance and make recycling centres more accessible, incorporating specialised bins for various waste types and organising frequent collection drives.
Sustainable transportation programs
Encourage community members to use bicycles and public transportation by developing bike lanes and bike-sharing programs. Collaborate with local governments to enhance public transport routes and timetables, making them more convenient and accessible.
Energy and water conservation campaigns
Initiate campaigns to encourage energy-saving practices in homes and businesses. This could involve educating people about the use of energy-e cient appliances, proper insulation, and the benefits of switching to renewable energy sources.
