FLEETWOOD ROTARY: WRITING A NEW CHAPTER Fleetwood Rotary came into being in January 1926, and has thus been serving the community of Fleetwood for almost 98 years. However, our membership has declined significantly in recent years especially since the outbreak of Covid. We thus now urgently need to find new members to ensure that we can continue to do all those things which the people of Fleetwood have come to appreciate so much, as well as finding new ways in which to serve them. Our current activities include: • The Drop-In Memory Centre which takes place at Emmanuel at The Mount on the third Thursday of the month and supports people with dementia and their families. • The charity book stalls at Thornton and Larkholme Co-op’s where anyone can deposit old books and take away others for a small donation. • Our various bucket collections at Affinity, Aldi, Asda etc which provide people with a trusted means of giving to good causes.

• RotaKids groups at several Fleetwood schools which help build children's self-esteem and community service ethics, and which also give them an introduction to project, team, and leadership skills. • Being among the volunteers who run the award-winning Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs, a charity which was started by members of Fleetwood Rotary, and which enables disabled people to access Fleetwood’s beautiful beach. • Fleetwood Fireworks display where we continue to support the Town Council as the new organiser of this much-loved community event. • Santa’s Sleigh, our signature event, loved by young and old alike, and which, along with our contribution to the Festive Lights parade, brings much cheer to the town in the run up to Christmas. Without new members, our ability to support events such as these may one day cease. How tragic would it be, for example, if Santa stopped touring our town in December in years to come because Fleetwood Rotary had faded away?

Fleetwood Rotary thus recognises that we now need to write a new chapter in our history by bringing in new members, young and old, any gender, who can continue and expand our current activities and respond to the future needs of the people of Fleetwood. In January 2026, Fleetwood Rotary will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. BEAVERBROOKS BRINGS THE SPARKLE TO BLACKPOOL’S ELMER ART TRAIL Fylde coast-based Beaverbrooks has become the latest company to sign up as an official supporter of Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool, helping to bring the resort’s first large-scale public art trail next spring.

The art trail is being brought to Blackpool by Brian House Children’s Hospice, and is expected to raise more than £100,000 for the charity, helping it to care for local lifelimited children. Beaverbrooks has supported the hospice’s adult services at Trinity Hospice for many years, and Chairman Mark Adlestone said supporting Brian House through the art trail meant a lot to the company. “We have a long association with Trinity Hospice, which was started by my business partner Andrew Brown who sadly passed away recently,” he said. “Andrew and his colleagues

LET’S GET READY TO SPARKLE! COMPETITORS REVEALED FOR WORLD FIREWORKS CHAMPIONSHIP BLACKPOOL The three nations who will compete in this year’s World Fireworks Championship in Blackpool have been revealed. India, Switzerland and Italy will battle it out over the three free events which will take place on the Tower Festival Headland on Saturday 16 and Saturday 30 September, and Friday 20 October. The World Fireworks Championship Blackpool is one of the resort’s most spectacular events, with the firework displays, all synchronised to music, being launched from the beach in front of The Blackpool Tower. This year’s event will open on Saturday 16 September with a display by the Azan Morani Fireworks (AMFQ) team – marking the first time an Indian fireworks company has performed in the UK. The show will be designed by Azan Morani who has designed and programmed some of the largest and most complex shows in the world. The company was founded in 1937 and has since delivered some of the most prestigious events in India, using state-of-the-art firing 20

and design technology. A spokesperson for AMFW said they were “ecstatic and honoured” to make history by putting on the first Indian pyrotechnics display in the UK. Week Two on Saturday 30 September, will see the Swiss pyrotechnics company, SUGYP, take centre-stage. Established in 1967, SUGYP, is one of Switzerland’s major pyrotechnics companies, putting on displays all across Europe, as well as competing in international festivals in the Philippines, Macau, Vietnam and Canada. Each year, the company makes more than 150 shows for Swiss National Day celebrations and has displayed at major events including the Americas Cup and the Lyon Festival of Lights. The final performance, by Italian fireworks company Pirotecnica Soldi, will take place on the evening of Friday 20 October, to coincide with the launch of this year’s annual Lightpool Festival in Blackpool. The company was founded by Francesco Soldi in 1869 as a response to architects

who wanted to illuminate the facades of churches and buildings on special occasions. Since then, generation after generation has continued a tradition of handcrafting fireworks, which are still made for displays at its factory in Florence. The team has participated in many International Fireworks competitions including Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Canada. They last performed in Blackpool in 1999. Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Firework nights are something very special in Blackpool and we can’t wait to see what our three new international competitors are planning for this year’s competition.” The three firework displays form an integral part of Blackpool’s major autumn and winter events programme. This includes: Blackpool Illuminations The annual Blackpool Illuminations have once again been extended by two months running nightly from September 1, 2023 to January 1, 2024. This year’s display includes three new installations, one by

internationally-renowned artist Dr Chila Kumari Singh Burman, MBE, another by Canadian-born Bruce Alfred, who specialises in Native American art, and a new version of Spitfire Island which has been reimagined by Laurence LlewelynBowen. All have been built by the Illuminations’ inhouse team based at the Lightworks manufacturing facility in Blackpool with the support of the Government’s Towns Fund. Lightpool Festival The award-winning

Lightpool Festival returns for October half-term with an amazing free-tosee programme of light installations, 3D projection shows, art trails, and stunning live performances from October 20-28. It will include world premieres and installations never before seen in the UK, including artworks from Australia, France, the Netherlands and Spain. The festival is delivered in collaboration with various sponsors and partners including Arts Council England.

Christmas By The Sea 2022 saw the Tower Festival Headland turned into an outdoor winter wonderland with skating rink, magic forest, snowfalls, fairground attractions, log cabins and festive projection shows. Six ways in which we may unwittingly be ﬂaunting the Highway Code. 1. Sleeping in your car whilst inebriated Logically, it may feel as though sleeping off a drink or two is the right thing to do, yet doing it in your vehicle is strictly prohibited if you still have the keys about your person. 2. Using an ‘unﬁxed’ mobile phone as a sat nav Since standalone satellite navigation systems became largely redundant after mobile phones proved they

could competently perform the same task, yet you’ll still need a fixed position for your phone when using sat nav, or you’re committing an offence. 3. Driving or parking on the pavement Highway Code Rule 244 states that you can’t park either partly or fully on a pavement unless road signs permit it. The same goes for driving, which is Rule 145. 4. Flashing your headlights to give way While the morals behind letting someone go before you are pure, using your headlights to signal to another driver that they can proceed is actually an offence. 5. Driving through puddles Splashing a pedestrian by driving through a puddle shows a willingness to “operate a vehicle without consideration for other persons”, and may be landed with a fine of up to £5,000. 6. Sounding your car horn in anger Sounding the horn out of frustration is actually an offence that can carry with it a small fine. It is actually only there to warn others of our presence.

Nadiya Hussain’s Chocolate Caramel Soda Bread Introduction My chocolate caramel soda bread isn’t your ordinary loaf. Just mix, bake, sit back and enjoy.

(Serves 12) • 350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda • 25g caster sugar • ½ tsp salt • 100g dark chocolate, roughly chopped (or chocolate chips) • 300ml buttermilk • 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste • 12 chocolate-covered caramels • 1 tsp cocoa powder, for dusting • 75g dark chocolate, melted

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C /180°C Fan/Gas mark 6. Dust a baking tray with a little flour. 2. Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda, sugar, salt and chocolate into a large bowl and mix together. 3. Mix the vanilla paste into the buttermilk.

4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients, then use a palette knife to bring the dough together. 5. Drop the dough into the centre of the prepared baking tray. Using floured hands, flatten it to a square roughly 25cm x 25cm.

6. Using a sharp knife, cut into 12 squares, making sure to cut all the way down. In the centre of each square add a soft caramel and push down gently into the centre. 7. Bake for 30 minutes. Once baked, leave the bread on the tray for 10 minutes. Dust with cocoa powder and drizzle with the melted chocolate.
