WYRE COUNCIL LAUNCHES AMBITIOUS

WYRE MOVING MORE STRATEGY TO TACKLE PHYSICAL INACTIVITY ACROSS THE BOROUGH.

Wyre Council delivered the launch of the new Wyre Moving More strategy alongside key stakeholders and partners from across Wyre last week at Highbury Stadium, Fleetwood, home of Fleetwood Town Football Club.

The strategy has been developed by a cross-sector partnership of experts from health, local government, higher education, schools and the charity sector to address the issue of combating physical inactivity.

Working together with Lancashire County Council, UCLAN, Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, Active Lancashire, Wyre and Fylde School Sports Partnership, local Primary Care Networks, Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Fylde Coast YMCA, Wyre Council is looking to strengthen the connections between sport, physical activity and health and wellbeing.

Local rates of inactivity are above both regional and national levels with 32% of adults and 26% of children and young people in Wyre being classed as inactive. The Wyre Moving More strategy aims to change this.

It is a five-year physical activity strategy for Wyre,

which aims to embed a culture of ‘moving more’ and thereby increase physical activity levels across communities in Wyre. It states the ambitions of the Wyre Moving More Project Board, a cross-sector multiagency initiative facilitated and led by Wyre Council and sets out the collective long-term commitment to, ‘help Wyre residents feel healthier, happier and better connected to their communities through physical activity.’

The launch event was attended by approximately 100 local stakeholders and partners showcasing the amazing collaborative approach across Wyre on this vitally important campaign. Rebecca Huddleston, Chief Executive of Wyre Council, opened the event and thanked attendees for their commitment to help deliver the strategic aims of Wyre Moving More and achieve the vision of success for the future.

Rebecca Huddleston, Chief Executive of Wyre Council states, “It is so important to work together with our influential partners on this ambitious strategy and really drive and embed a culture of moving more across our communities in the borough. I’m committing to the campaign by making ‘my move’ and joining in with regular fitness classes and enjoying more parkruns.”

Attendees heard from many local stakeholders including Paul Blythin, Director Health and Skills at Active Lancashire; John Hartley, CEO of Fleetwood Town Community Trust; Sean McGann, Head Coach at Fleetwood Amateur Boxing Club; Rob Larcombe, Executive Director at Healthy Heads Education and Anne Mullins, Leisure Centre Manager at Fylde Coast YMCA. The stakeholders delivered important talks on how they can contribute to the Wyre Moving More strategy and how they can help to influence and encourage their own networks to get involved in the strategy and commit to helping the community to move more.

Wyre Council are now building a network of professionals, groups and organisations that provide opportunities to get everyone in Wyre moving more to become official Wyre Moving More partners. They’re looking for people who can promote and encourage residents to be more active in Wyre as well as connect with those delivering in the sport, activity and wellbeing industries. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please register your interest to become an official partner. Visit www.wyremovingmore. co.uk to learn more and register online.

CREAM OF BLACKPOOL’S YOUNG TALENT TO JOIN

SWITCH-ON CELEBRATIONS

Some of Blackpool’s brightest young musicians are to take to the stage as part of this year’s Illuminations Switch-On celebration.

The Upbeat Rock Academy, which organises rock music tuition for more than 300 students from across the Fylde Coast, will present Blackpool Introduces, an hour-long showcase of local talent ahead of the main Switch-On concert on the night of Friday 30 August.

The young people will be joined by Blackpool-based House of Wingz, an awardwinning hip hop dance crew that has already been featured on prime time national television.

The Blackpool Introduces session will be followed by the main event, a two-hour show hosted by Hits Radio breakfast show presenters, Leanne and Joel, and featuring a line-up of some top music talent. The show will culminate in the iconic Switch-On moment when a celebrity will pull the switch to trigger four months of Illuminations.

The celebration, which will be held on the Tower Festival Headland, will once again be freely accessible to the public with no tickets required.

Last year’s event, which marked a return to the outdoors after three years

of being staged indoors due to pandemic restrictions, attracted a record crowd of 80,000 on to the seafront to watch Sophie Ellis-Bextor pull the famous switch.

opportunity to perform in front of a festival-size crowd – and in an iconic setting in front of The Blackpool Tower.”

A VisitBlackpool spokesperson said: “We are delighted to be able to see the Blackpool Introduces session return to the Switch-On stage. It gives some of our incredible home-grown talent a glorious opportunity to perform outdoors in front of a huge crowd. We know from past experience it will provide unforgettable memories for these up-and-coming musicians.”

Ian Hooper, who has just launched a live music venue alongside his second Upbeat Rock Academy in Blackpool town centre, said: “What an amazing opportunity for our young people.

“For many of our youngsters this is a once-in-a-lifetime

Jonathan Breeze, North West Regional Sales Director for Bauer Media Group, said: “Our team is really excited about the prospect of delivering this year’s Switch-On celebrations. We are delighted that the event will be opened by local musicians and performers – a fitting start in a resort that has long been the home of entertainment.”

More details on the live entertainment programme and, of course, the identity of who will switch on this year’s Illuminations will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Illuminations would once again be extended by two months, running nightly until January 5, 2025.

The Hotel Avocado by

Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down.

Yet the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.
