FORMER BRIAN HOUSE CHAIRMAN BECOMES CHARITY’S FIRST VICE PRESIDENT Brian House Children’s Hospice has welcomed its very first Vice President. As he stepped down as a Trustee for Trinity Hospice after 12 years, Christopher Beverley was announced as the Vice President for Brian House, supporting Trinity’s President, Sir Bill Beaumont, and championing the vital work of the Fylde coast’s only children’s hospice. For the duration of his time on Trinity’s Board of Trustees, Christopher has been Chairman of Brian House, which he has described as an honour. He said: “It has been a huge privilege, but also a tremendous pleasure to be a member of the Board of what is probably the best-known local charity which has served the local community of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde for so many years. “The hospice had provided wonderful care for a number of close friends and relatives, especially to my late wonderful mother-in-law who spent her final days wrapped in the care of the staff who provided us with support at a difficult time for my wife and I. “It was so clearly the right place for me to give my time and become a volunteer.” As Christopher, who is a former consultant solicitor and Deputy Coroner for the Blackpool and Fylde District, stepped down as a Trustee, having served the required

• 500g strong white bread ﬂour, plus extra for dusting • 10g ﬁne sea salt • 10g instant yeast • 40ml olive oil • 400ml tepid water • Fine semolina for dusting (optional)

Ingredients

Bread is so many different things to so many different people – a snack, a starter, or even an entire meal. For me, its rustic beauty is never bettered than when done by the Italians who, in the same way that they do with so much other cuisine, seem to lace every mouthful with provenance, history and love. Step forward, the ciabatta!

Method 1. Lightly oil a 2-3 litre square plastic container, then tip the flour in the bowl of the mixer and add the salt to one side and the yeast to the other side, so they’re not close. 2. Add the olive oil and ¾ of the water and begin mixing on a slow speed with the dough hook attachment. As the dough starts to come together, slowly add the remaining water. Then mix for a further 5-8 minutes on a medium speed until the dough is smooth and stretchy. 3. Tip out the dough into the prepared tub and spread it so it reaches all sides and corners. Cover with a tea towel or reusable

plastic wrap and leave somewhere warm until it has doubled or even trebled in size, 1-2 hours or longer. 4. Once the dough has doubled or tripled in size, pre-heat your oven to 220°C (Fan 200°C)/Gas mark 7. Line two baking trays with baking parchment or silicone paper. Dust your work surface heavily with more of the flour and add some semolina too, if you have it, then tip out the wet dough onto the surface, handling it gently to keep as much air in it as possible.

UK SHARED PROSPERITY FUND DIRECTOR VISITS FLEETWOOD TO SEE PROGRESS OF PROJECTS ACROSS WYRE Wyre Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) team secured the very first English district visit from the Government UKSPF Director in November. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the ongoing plans and projects made possible through Wyre Council’s UKSPF funding as well as enabling discussions about the aspirations for the future for the borough. In December 2022 Wyre Council secured £3.9 million as part of the Levelling Up agenda for UKSPF projects. In order to secure the funding, Wyre Council submitted an investment plan proposal to government outlining projects that the funding would be used for. The plan and the priorities it identified were written in consultation with Wyre’s Town Centre Partnership boards and organisations who can deliver Lancashirewide initiatives. There are a variety of projects currently progressing across the borough, from local creative and cultural activities like events, festivals and arts programmes, through to larger scale projects that support businesses, existing town centre CCTV upgrade, the development of community facilities and improvements to green spaces and public realm, as well as a multitude of other exciting projects in between

Photovoltaic panels, LED lighting, removal of fossil fuel gas heating will help achieve significant energy and cost savings, helping the council on their commitment to achieving their net zero targets. The team also stopped by Fleetwood Museum to meet with the Museum Trust team and learn more about their ongoing and future Heritage projects plans and ended their trip at Marine Hall in Fleetwood.

SEA OF SANTAS RAISES £42,000 FOR BRIAN HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE Nearly 1,700 Santas turned Blackpool’s promenade into a sea of red at this year’s Blackpool Santa Dash. The annual event is expected to have raised more than £42,000 for Brian House Children’s Hospice once all sponsorship has come in from everyone taking part. Blackpool Santa Dash is a longstanding event in the town’s festive calendar, attracting people from across the Fylde coast and beyond for a 3k ‘dash’ from Sandcastle Waterpark to The Manchester pub and back. Organised by Brian House, every penny raised through sponsorship helps to provide outstanding children’s hospice care for local families who need it across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. Events Fundraiser, Danny Hickes, said: “We’re absolutely delighted at the number of people who joined us on a cold December

morning to run, job or walk along our famous promenade, dressed as Santa and helping us to raise an incredible amount of money for our charity. “As always, the atmosphere was amazing, with festive music and entertainment from Andy Bolton Productions and singer Melissa Miles. It really got everyone into the Christmas spirit. “It was particularly wonderful to see some of our own children and Brian House colleagues joining in, showing everyone taking part just what a real difference they are helping us to make to local people. “We are blown away by the generosity of everyone who joined us and chose to either make a donation or raise sponsorship. Every penny really does add up, and help us to provide our very specialist care to our area’s most fragile children.”

After crossing the finishing line, each Santa was rewarded with a chocolate medal and a cup of hot chocolate. And event sponsor The Kentown Wizard Foundation provided an extra special gift for some of the people taking part – each participant was entered into a draw, and three lucky people were presented with £250 cash prizes and five won a £50 Smyths Toys voucher. Danny added: “We are so lucky to have the support of our friends at The Kentown Wizard Foundation who, for the second year in a row, has the extra mile by providing a special gift to the people who support our charity. “A huge thank you to them, to every single Santa who joined us at the weekend and to the team of volunteers who helped to make Blackpool Santa Dash another exceptional event.”
