WYRE BEAT BRINGS TOGETHER SCHOOLS TO TACKLE ANTI-SOCIAL
Schools from across Wyre came together to highlight the impact of anti-social behaviour at a special evening of performance at Marine Hall in Fleetwood last night.
Pupils from Saint Aidan’s, Cardinal Allen and Fleetwood High showcased performances at the Wyre Beat event which they had written and produced themselves. Tasked with demonstrating what antisocial behaviour means to them and the impact it has on their lives, each school created a piece of dance or drama to perform to their school and families.
Wyre Beat is a project coordinated by Wyre Council. Working alongside other authorities including Lancashire Police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Wyre’s Youth Council and Lancashire County Councils Targeted Youth Support team, the aim of the project is to highlight specific community safety priorities within schools.
The theme of this year’s project was anti-social behaviour and the council hopes to build on the event next year focusing on a new theme each time. Working together in preparation for the event has given young people the chance to reflect on important social issues as well as have their say through their performances.
BEHAVIOUR
Wyre based mental health support charity Doherty’s Destiny kindly provided prizes for the schools taking part. On the night Cardinal Allen was awarded first place, winning the top prize of £500 for the school.
Rebecca Huddleston, Wyre Council’s Chief Executive attended the event and commented:
“Well done to everyone who took part in this year’s project and last night’s Wyre Beat event. It was great to see young people come together, discuss important topics and
perform such impactful pieces. Working with our partners and local schools in this way allows us to get young people involved and highlight in a positive way what can be done to improve our communities.
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Doherty’s Destiny for providing the prizes, to all the schools for their hard work, to our judges on the night and to Blackpool School of Arts who filmed this wonderful evening.”
ELMER TRAIL PROVIDES LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL CHILDREN
A major art trail due to take to the streets in Blackpool next spring will also provide a mammoth learning programme to schools across the Fylde coast, helping local children and you people celebrate diversity and inclusion through creativity.
As well as an accessible learning pack, participating schools, nurseries and youth organisations in Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool will get their very own young Elmer sculpture to design and decorate. It will then form part of the mammoth art trail before being returned to them to treasure.
The trail is being organised by, and will raise vital funds for, Brian House Children’s Hospice.
The Learning Programme is being made possible thanks to sponsors Tower Insurance Brokers, who couldn’t wait to get involved, pledging their support at a special launch event at Blackpool Football Club last month.
Tim Forshaw, CEO of Tower Insurance Brokers said: “We are an ethical and culture driven business. It is important that Tower act through time and money gifted, by supporting local charitable causes such as this art trail in aid of Brian House.
“The Insurance sector is sadly void of young people and talent. So having the
chance to speak to our future generation of workers was an opportunity not to be missed. We are wanting to help raise awareness of the underlying message Elmer delivers, promoting diversity and generosity. We also want to demonstrate that whether it be through charitable work or just being nice to people, every little helps. Life can be difficult sometimes but remembering we’re all in this together can help us all feel more connected to those around us, regardless of age or background. Ultimately, we want to encourage people to give back to their community.
“We feel Brian House and Elmer have a lot in common. They are both the ‘elephant in the room’. People and businesses sometimes shy away from Brian House because the services they offer are so emotive. We have seen the great work Brian House does by making shorter lives great, fun and filled with love. It is this message we are also keen to help promote and help the community to openly speak about this and other challenging topics.”
Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool will see at least 30 large sculptures of David McKee’s much celebrated children’s book character, Elmer, in key locations to make a free family-friendly event across Blackpool. There will also be at least 30 young Elmers on
the trail as part of the Learning Programme.
The programme will be available to schools, colleges and youth programmes across the Fylde coast, helping to deliver lessons to celebrate the wonderful things that make us different, supported by the new Ofsted Framework.
Linzi Warburton, Head of Fundraising at Brian House, said: “The Learning Programme is a key part of Elmer’s Big Parade Blackpool, engaging with and celebrating the incredible schools, nurseries and youth organisations we are so lucky to have on the Fylde coast.
“It’s a chance for our children and young people to join this unique and fun event by adopting and designing their own young Elmer, which will be their to keep at the end of the trail.
“We’re so grateful to Tower Insurance Brokers for pledging their support of this mammoth event in Blackpool by sponsoring our Learning Programme. Because of them, we will be able to help local children and young people experiment with different artforms and use creativity as a learning tool.”

Ingredients
(serves 4-6)
• 1 x 2.5kg leg of lamb
• 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped
Top Tip
You can buy a readyboned or a butterflied leg of lamb, or ask your butcher to bone it for you.
Rick Stein’s Butter ied Lamb
Introduction
This leg of lamb comes with herby lemon and paprika marinade, and really enriches the senses for al fresco dining for what is a very special time of the year. It can be cooked on the barbecue or in the oven. Serve simply with potato wedges and greens for a laid-back meal with friends. Reduce the dried red chilli flakes if you prefer a milder marinade.
Method
1. To prepare the lamb, turn the leg over to the point where the bone runs closest to the surface. Using a sharp knife, split the meat along the bone and ease it away from the bone along both sides, leaving the bone as clean as possible. At the fatter end of the joint, there is a group of smaller bones, so continue to cut around them too until you can lift all the bones from the meat and are left with a butterfly shaped, bone-free joint. Trim away any excess fat and sinew. Lay a piece
of cling film over the meat and bash the surface with a rolling pin to flatten the thick sections lightly. The meat should be an even thickness throughout.
2. Mix the marinade ingredients together. Rub the marinade all over the lamb and set aside in a roasting tin, skin-side up, for about 30 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas mark 7.
• 1 tsp dried red chilli flakes
• 6 tsp chopped rosemary
• 6 sprigs thyme, leaves picked
• 1 fresh bay leaf, finely chopped
• 1 lemon, juice only
• 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce
• 2 tbsp Spanish sweet smoked paprika
• 6 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp flaky sea salt
• ½ tsp coarsely ground or crushed black pepper
Top Tips
• To cook on the barbecue, preheat the barbecue (10 minutes for gas and up to 40 minutes for charcoal). When hot, grill the lamb for about 10–12 minutes on each side. Rest for 5 minutes on a board covered with kitchen foil before carving into thick slices.
4. Roast the lamb for 15 minutes, reduce the temperature to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas mark 4 and roast for a further 15 minutes. This will give you pink lamb, if you would rather it slightly less so, cook for a further 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and cover with foil. Rest for at least 15 minutes. Place on a board before carving into thick slices.
5. Serve with potato wedges, your choice of vegetables and some of the meat juices.

The Revenue Generation
The pursuit of additional income, and why age is no barrier to enriching our finances.
Pursuing greater wealth and improving your financial position is all about maximising the attributes and skills you already possess.
With that in mind, here are five key qualities that anyone, of any age, in any walk of life, can reinforce and refine en route to a better financial position:
1. Improve your skills and invest in yourself
Continuous learning is essential for personal and professional growth. By acquiring new skills and enhancing existing ones, you increase your market value and become more attractive to employers.
So consider pursuing additional qualifications, attending workshops, or enrolling in online courses relevant to your industry.
Also develop soft skills, such as communication, problemsolving and leadership, as these are highly valued in the job market.
2. Diversify your income streams
Diversifying your income streams can provide financial stability and open doors to new opportunities. Passive income sources, for instance – such as investments, rental properties, or royalties – can supplement your primary earnings.
You can also explore side hustles or freelance work, which
can be tailored to your schedule and interests. By diversifying, you create multiple
revenue channels, increasing your overall income and financial security.
3. Optimise your career trajectory
Naturally, your career path plays a significant role in determining your income potential. That means actively pursuing promotions, and seeking out new opportunities for career advancement within your organisation.
Furthermore, in the last two decades there has been a real boom in the ‘job hop strategy’. That determines that there is no longer a ‘job for life’, and it’s been proven that changing employment every few years, especially early in a career, can lead to higher salary offers and quicker advancement.
4. Negotiate your salary
Many individuals underestimate the importance of negotiating
their salary, leaving potential income on the table.
When accepting a new job or seeking a pay increase, research the market value for your position and skills.
Prepare a case highlighting your accomplishments and their impact on your place of work, approaching the negotiation with confidence, professionalism, an acceptance for compromise, as well as a personality that says you are keen to keep pushing forward and learning.
5. Leverage your network
Try to attend networking events, join industry associations, and use social media platforms like LinkedIn to expand your network. After all, building and maintaining connections with colleagues, mentors, and industry leaders can lead to job offers, referrals and valuable advice, increasing your chances of securing higher-paying positions.

Smart Summer
How to keep your child engaged with learning over the summer holidays.
As parents, we do our best to fill up school holidays with fun activities even if it means compromising our own work schedules and chores. The problem is, there are only so many good times even kids can handle, and it soon becomes clear that they’re actually yearning for a bit of learning.
The following tips are designed to not just ease the burden of summer lethargy, but also to keep youngsters’ brains ticking over so that when September does eventually come round, the return to full-time education won’t be such a shock to the system.
Read books
Reading books is a great way to continue learning over the summer break. Reading can improve your child’s vocabulary, critical thinking, and comprehension skills, along with providing a great activity for you to engage in together.
Getting children into the habit of turning to books for entertainment is one that will stay with them for life and provide hours of amusement.
Set small tasks
If your children are younger they probably won’t have much homework from their teachers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t set them activities yourself.
Why not encourage them to write a short story or document a recent day out you shared? Perhaps they would enjoy doing some crafting or, if you’re feeling ambitious, a science experiment… because learning doesn’t have to be dull.
Get online support
Sometimes the internet makes parenting harder and sometimes it makes it easier. Fortunately, there are a wealth of apps and online resources to help your child study and learn, such as flashcard apps, online tutorials, and educational videos. There are also numerous forums where parents and carers can share ideas for home learning.
Create a study schedule
Scheduling in a little study time each day, or week, can really help children focus and feel comforted by routine.
This schedule should be flexible enough to accommodate fun summer activities but structured enough to ensure they are making consistent progress.
Create a project
With so many weeks to while away, the summer hols are a great time to collaborate on a big project with your child. Perhaps it is a job in the home, like re-decorating your lounge, or maybe you could create a scrapbook of your summer adventures.
Such a project will not only give your little one a great sense of achievement when school rolls round again, it will also create something they can cherish long after the summer sun has dimmed.
