Blackpool prepares for free school meals for primary pupils Bispham Endowed Church of England Primary School has been under the national spotlight as it showcased its delivery of the free breakfast scheme.

All primary school headteachers have recently received a letter from the Government confirming they will be funding free school meals for all pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 classes from September 2014. Myles Bremner, from the School Food Plan, visited Bispham Endowed Primary School to see how their catering services team were preparing for an increase in the number of meals they deliver. The School Food Plan was published by Government last year and lays out specific actions that will transform what children eat in school and how they learn about food. In January 2013 Blackpool Council introduced universal free breakfasts for its 12,000 primary school children.

BJFF have agreed a programme of fund-raising and social events for 2014, which will culminate in our 45th Anniversary Charity Dinner Dance. Unfortunately, there have been very few games played since the New Year, with the weather hitting the pitches hard. Some teams have managed 2 or 3 games, and here we chart the progress of all U9’s to U12’s Saturday teams. Under 9’s – Our Blades won through to the SemiFinals of the P&DPL Cup, where they will face YMCA away on 1st March, following an excellent 9-2 aggregate win over Thornton Cleveleys. In the P&DPL Plate, our Predators are also through to the Semi-Final stage, a 7-1 aggregate win against South Shore setting up a Semi-Final tie away to Spirit of Youth. Our Vipers are a round behind, and are due to play Fleetwood Gym at Home in the Quarter Finals on 15th Feb. Under 10’s – In the Cup Quarter-Final, our Blades and Predators were drawn to play each other, and in a fantastic couple of games, the Blades ran out 5-3 aggregate winners following a first game 3-1 win, and a thrilling 2-2 draw in the second game, a superb performance from our Predators showing their vast improvement. In the Semi-Final, our Blades, winners of the competition last year, face Foxhall away on 1st March. In league action, our Blades have 4 games remaining and in a twohorse race at the top it looks a second consecutive A Division Runners-Up finish, but 12 points from their remaining games will keep the pressure on

their title rivals. In the B Division, our Predators currently sit in 3rd place with 8 games remaining, and also have their eyes set on a Runners-Up spot. Under 11’s – BJFF enter the Quarter Finals stage of the Coulton Cup with an incredible 3 representatives still in the competition. Our Blades defeated Poulton Town Panthers 6-0, and will play the winner of the Poulton Youth / AFC Blackpool tie. Our Vipers Whites ran out 4-0 winners against Foxhall Hoops, and will play Spirit of Youth Yellows. Best performance of the season from our C Division Vipers Blues saw them overcome A Division Thornton Cleveleys with a thrilling 3-2 victory which sees them face A Division Fleetwood Town or B Division St Annes in the Quarter Finals. In the P&DPL Plate, our Vipers Reds bowed out with a narrow 0-1 defeat against Spirit of Youth Blues. In league action, our Blades (reigning Champions) are 7 points clear in the A Division with 6 games remaining. Our Vipers Whites are 3rd in the B Division, but can go top if they win their game in hand in what will be a three-way fight for the title. Our Vipers Blues are 4th but aiming to finish 3rd in the C Division, whilst our Vipers Reds look to consolidate with a 7th place finish their target. Under 12’s – Our Blades, reigning Cup Champions, are through to the Semi-Finals, where they will face Poulton Town Blacks or Layton Lions. In league action, the top 5 teams at Xmas have now formed a mini A Division, and all are still in the hunt for the title with 7 games remaining. Our Predators Whites remain in contention for the Coulton Plate, with a Home Quarter-Final tie against Warton Typhoons Blues to look forward to on 22nd Feb. In league action, our Predators Whites currently lie 7th of 9 teams in the B Division with 7 games remaining. Clifton Rangers Junior Football Club News We are an FA Charter Standard Development football club, founded in 1977 to coach junior and youth football. The club was awarded an FA Charter Development status on the 6th March, 2010. Development: The club are working towards expanding our general management to support the future development of the club. Therefore, new positions will become available this year, such as a new general secretary, assistant secretary, and respect and charter standard Officer. In addition we are planning a social, fundraising and children’s committee. These will become active in September 2014 with welfare officer heading up the children’s committee with am member of each age group participating to give the children a voice in the club. FA Charter Standard: We currently hold the second highest FA charter standard development club award since 2010. At this time of year we are required to carry out an annual health check, which involves renewing qualification across the clubs coaches and officials, such safeguarding children, emergency aid and reviewing our development plan. A Watch scheme is a citizen-organised system of policing in a particular community or environment to prevent crime and disorder. New partnership set up to help bus punctuality and reliability
A new problem solving task force has been set up to help improve bus punctuality in Blackpool. The Punctuality Improvement Partnership (PIP for short) will be charged with identifying hotspots and problems which prevent buses from staying on schedule and coming up with plans to tackle them. The group will comprise of staff from both Blackpool Council and Blackpool Transport and other agencies, like emergency services, other councils and VOSA, will also be consulted when it is necessary. Similar partnerships have worked effectively in other areas of the country.
Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said ‘Ensuring that buses run consistently, reliably and on time is the number one priority for bus users Developing a task force to proactively identify hotspots is great news for passengers and for the town in general. Creating a high quality 26
transport service is a key priority for growth too and this will help us to do so. The PIP group will meet regularly and will also be a key forum for listening to public feedback and discussing how to improve the service for customers.’
And Bob Mason from Blackpool Transport, said ‘Punctuality, reliability and safety are the most important part of any public transport operation and we hope, by working together more effectively, we can continue to improve on all these important issues. We have been in discussions with officers from the council and Vehicle Operations Standards Agency (VOSA) for some time and we look forward to seeing some positive results which will assist in getting buses moving from A to B in a more timely manner in Blackpool.’

Blackpool News It’s Time To Take On Cancer As Race For Life 2014 Launches In Blackpool Blackpool women are being urged to join forces and show cancer who’s boss by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2014 which is now open for entries.
Every day, more than 100 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West.* Everyone is special, everyone is somebody’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or colleague. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Blackpool women of all ages, shapes and sizes, to defy this dreadful disease by entering Race for Life 5k event at Blackpool Promenade on Wednesday, July 9. Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry ‘cancer, we’re coming to get you’ and urging women to sign up as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Liz Booth, Cancer Research UK’s Blackpool Events Manager, said: ‘We’re calling on Blackpool’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life. We know how committed Blackpool women can be when they really make up their minds to do something. We want to harness that power to stop cancer in its tracks, by raising money for life-saving research. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they

prefer.’ Everyone who takes part in Race for Life, from the participants themselves to the millions of supporters who sponsor and encourage them, becomes part of a powerful collective force rising up to beat cancer sooner. Last year, 2600 women took part in Race for Life in Blackpool and raised a fantastic £121,000. This year, organisers again need 2600 women and girls to stride out to help raise in excess of £110,000. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the North West. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its groundbreaking work but with help from the people of Blackpool, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Liz continued: ‘Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all.’
