Blackpool News

Blackpool Food Partnership Launched It is hoped no one will go hungry in Blackpool again following the launch of a new network that will co-ordinate food banks across the resort. The partnership aims to strengthen the work that already exists between churches, other faith and voluntary groups and Blackpool Council to get food parcels to those in need. While the partnership is inspired by Christian faith groups, it is committed to serving the whole of the community and offers support to people of all faiths as well as those without.

Greg Smith from Together Lancashire, Cllr Simon Blackburn and the Rt Rev Geoff Pearson, Bishop of Blackburn

In practice, the agreement will see churches and voluntary and religious groups make referrals to the Blackpool Council Discretionary Support Scheme. People will then be assessed and, if eligible, be given food parcels. Co-ordinating the groups centrally will also help to ensure that people in crisis will receive the help and support they need, being signposted to helpful services and getting advice to prevent similar emergencies from occurring in the future.

People gather for the launch of Blackpool Food Partnership

The benefits of the partnership:

• We can monitor the current need for food parcels At the launch of the event, Cllr Simon Blackburn, • We can plan ahead to develop services to help Leader of Blackpool Council, spoke out to people in need express his support for the initiative. Blackpool is the sixth most impoverished local authority in the country and it is believed more than 9,000 children in the town live below the poverty line. As a result Blackpool Council provides free breakfast for all primary school pupils.

You can donate at locations throughout the town. RECIPE

With jam season now well under way, here’s a delicious and unusual alternative to the traditional fruit recipe sweet potato and Ginger jam. A perfect accompaniment for both sweet and savoury dishes, sweet potato jam tastes delicious spread over a slice of wholemeal bread or when served with an after dinner cheese board. What’s more sweet potatoes are packed full of vitamin A and a good source of potassium, fibre and vitamin C, and unlike ordinary potatoes counts toward one of the five-a-day.

 

Ingredients 250g Sweet potatoes 250g Sugar 50g Grated fresh ginger

Preparation 1. Peel the sweet potatoes, place in a pan with some water and boil until soft. 2. Drain the sweet potatoes and mash. 3. Weigh the sweet potatoes and place in a heavy based pan with an equal quantity of sugar. 4. Place on medium heat and bring to the boil stirring occasionally, add the ginger to taste, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook for at least ten minutes. Carry on cooking until the desired consistency has been reached. 5. Sterilise some jam jars by boiling them in water. 6. Pour the hot jam into the hot jam jars. 7. Leave to cool.

18

  You can also flavour the jam with lemon or orange zest or try adding a little vanilla.  Unlike most jams, sweet potato jam does not have a specific setting point, so you can make it as thick as you like. The more you cook the jam the denser it will become.  It is worthwhile remembering that the jam will keep for a number of months so you can make it in reasonably large batches.

INTERIORS

Get some hall appeal… 

Your hallway is the window into your home, showcasing your style and setting the tone for the rest of the house.

A

lthough the kitchen is widely regarded as the heart of the home, have you considered your hallway as the true hub, offering a living, breathing canvas that showcases your style, home ambience and family life?

When a neighbour brings round some misplaced post or a parent from school drops off your child after a play date, the hallway is probably the first thing they see when you open the door. First impressions count, and hall appeal is most definitely the new kerb appeal, as a stylish hallway can make a real statement. However, more often than not, this part of the home is neglected, used as a dumping ground by the kids and is always at the bottom of the priority list when it comes to redecorating. It really doesn't take much to refresh your hallway. Apart from the obvious lick of paint and drill sergeant discipline needed to ensure the children use the neat new storage system, there is one feature that can make a dramatic difference to the hallway’s look and feel… The staircase. According to Richard Burbidge, the stair parts expert, upgrading your staircase is much simpler and more cost effective than you’d think. The company offers a range of simple-to-install stair parts to suit any style or budget.

20

Its FUSION® range, for example, features glass panels that create the illusion of light and space, ideal for dark, narrow hallways. This effect can be heightened further by teaming with pastel paint shades and strategically placed mirrors. As well as creating flattering illusions, stair balustrades can also transcend the practical to become the main feature of your hallway. For instance, the Elements range from Richard Burbidge mixes contemporary oak banisters with twisted iron balustrades, creating a real focal point. As British homeowners start to transform and update their homes much more regularly than ten years ago, sticking to one style of balustrade may seem like a big commitment, particularly when choosing ‘feature staircases’. However, Richard Burbidge ranges come with predrilled hand and baserails, meaning that different styles can be fitted, and making updating your staircase as easy as a new lick of paint. To find out how you can transform your hall with new stair parts, visit www.stairproject.co.uk. Here you’ll find an array of inspirational images, as well as Richard Burbidge’s handy planning tool, which can help with the designing of your new stairs.

Wall of fire brings epic opera to life in Ellen Kent’s new show JEALOUSY, revenge, hopeless romance and a breathtaking wall of fire bring epic operas Aida and Nabucco to life in award-winning opera producer Ellen Kent’s new tour. Pyrotechnic displays and lighting effects help bring Ellen’s love of large scale productions to the local stage, complete with stunning scenery depicting the splendour and mystery of ancient Egypt and the beautiful hanging gardens of Babylon. Ellen said: ‘I feel I can indulge myself in these operas. I try my best to give the audience the feeling of something epic.’ The celebrated Chisinau National Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra, with international guest soloists, visit the Grand Theatre in Blackpool on November 9 (Aida) and November 10 (Nabucco). Ellen’s production of Aida includes temple dancers, cages of exotic birds and parrots, ballet sequences, beautiful pillared sets with intricate tomb paintings, Bedouin dancers, a bathing scene and the ceremonial march with a pyrotechnic display where a wall of fire extends across the stage in a massive burst of flames Amazing poi fire spinners come out of the firewall with a dazzling display of fire wheels and live flames to mark the jubilant celebrations of the classic Triumphal march. About 40 local dancers, children and adults, join the 80-strong cast as slaves and soldiers on stage. The tale focusses on Ethiopian princess Aida, who is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. Military commander Radames falls in love with Aida and struggles between his feeling for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris also loves Radames and they are due to be wed, although Radames still yearns for Aida, who persuades him to flee into the desert with her. But Radames is found out and surrenders, condemned to be entombed alive. As he is sealed into the vault, he discovers Aida has hidden herself there so they can be together in death. Ellen said: ‘Basically, it’s the big one. The biggest, most spectacular opera. In my opinion, it’s the best score Verdi ever wrote. It’s exotic and interesting and the music is simply spectacular. Even now, it’s my ambition to stage Aida on the banks of the Nile with a cast of thousands.’

Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

Nabucco has a similar place near Ellen’s heart as it is the first opera she ever staged in 1993 in an open-air production to an audience of 7,000 at Rochester Castle with a 200-strong cast flown over from Romania in Ceausescu’s former plane borrowed from the country’s president. She said: ‘It was a massive occasion. Nabucco is a political opera about people fighting for their freedom. It was written as a gesture, a cry for freedom, to show that people should be free and able to do their own thing in life.’ The opera follows the plight of the Hebrews as they are conquered and sentenced to death by the Babylonian King Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar). A complicated romantic plot provides the detail with a love triangle combined with power play, religion and death. One of the most well-known and emotionally haunting songs in opera, Va Pensiero – The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, is set on the banks of the River Euphrates as the captured are taken to be slaughtered. Amazing stage and lighting effects recreate the burning of Solomon’s temple as jealousy and destruction drive the king to madness. The tour features celebrated international soloists sopranos Elena Dee and Ecaterina Danu, and tenors Sorin Lupu and Nicolae Busuioc. Tickets are on sale now from the box office on 01253 290190 or go online at www. blackpoolgrand.co.uk. For more information, go to www.ellenkent.com or follow us on Twitter @OperaBalletIntl.

Staff from a local business volunteering for a beach clean at Lytham beach.

LOVEmyBEACH cleaning up the North West Organisations across the North West have joined forces to create the LOVEmyBEACH campaign. The Turning Tides partnership has launched www.lovemybeach.org offering lots of tips on how people can help keep beaches and bathing waters clean - from volunteering for a beach litter pick to not flushing disposable products down the toilet. You don’t have to live near the beach to make a difference - everyone across the North West region can do something, whether at home, at work or visiting the area. Annie Heslop, Jayne Foat and Emma McColm co-ordinate LOVEmyBEACH activities across the region and are busy supporting volunteer groups, schools, hotels and local people to do their bit to make a difference to bathing waters. You can’t miss them out and about in their LOVEmyBEACH hoodies! Water sampling by the Environment Agency reveals that the 32 bathing waters - from Silloth in the North to West Kirkby in the South - are dramatically cleaner than they were 20 years ago. But there’s more we need to do to meet tougher European Standards coming into force in 2015. If a bathing water, a designated area of water where people swim and paddle, doesn’t meet the new standards, signs could go up advising people not to bathe. Neil Jack, Chair of the Turing Tides Partnership and Chief Executive of Blackpool Council said: “We’re working together across the North West to make sure everyone can enjoy our beaches and

26

bathing waters for generations to come. But we need your help! Going to the beach and paddling in the waters - both along the coast and in the Lakes - is an important part of the British culture. They not only help attract millions of visitors, but also help improve our health and wellbeing. Please visit the website and see what you can do to help LOVEmyBEACH and share your ideas. Why not come and join us at a beach clean, you?ll make new friends, get some great exercise and fresh air. Who knows what you might find!” On behalf of the Fylde Peninsular Water Management Group, Cllr Fred Jackson, Cabinet Member for Urban Regeneration at Blackpool Council, said: “The new LOVEmyBEACH website offers residents, visitors and local businesses practical advice on the small steps they can take to help keep our bathing waters clean, and there’s lots of information on there about what we’re doing too. You can find out what’s going on at a beach near you as well as keep up-to-date with all the latest beach and bathing water events taking place across the Fylde.” The website has been built by Manchester based agency Creative Spark who immediately saw how important this campaign is to the North West. Founder and Creative Director, Neil Marra said: “This is our first project for Turning Tides and we are very proud to have worked on it. The LOVEmyBEACH campaign promotes a clean environment across the North West, an area close to the hearts of the Creative Spark team. We look forward to seeing LOVEmyBEACH succeed to improve bathing water quality in the region for good.”

Blackpool is the sixth most impoverished local authority in the country and it is believed more than 9,000 children in the town live below the poverty line. As a result Blackpool Council provides free breakfast for all primary school pupils.

Community Comes Together To Extend School A new extension at Kingcraig School and Community Centre has been officially opened by Blackpool Council Chief Executive, Neil Jack and Cllr Kath Rowson

extend the centre for the benefit of the whole community. Our contractors regularly put a lot back into the community and I thank them for their contribution to this project.’

The single storey development is part of a community project which responded to calls from parents at the school, which is based on Kingcraig Road, Bispham, for more space. The determined mums and dads put their case to Blackpool Council Chief Executive Neil Jack and, following talks with his counterpart at Blackpool Coastal Housing, Peter Jefferson, a plan was formed to construct the extension.

The project delighted youngsters at the school. Head boy, Nishan Khajuria, said: ‘Everybody has really enjoyed themselves at the opening. It’s going to make it much better and we’re really happy about it.’ Head girl, Kaitlin O’Herlihy, added: ‘I went to the Children’s Centre and it was really interesting. There were lots of books to read and things to do. It’s a perfect way to start learning.’

With many Blackpool Coastal Housing tenants living nearby and many attending the school, the company were keen to assist and spoke to their contractors. The contractors, led by Forrest, joined forces and donated materials, labour, time and expertise, to make the extension happen at minimal cost to the school. And to conclude the project, Mr Jack and Cllr Rowson finally cut the ribbon to officially open it at the school. Mr Jack said: ‘I was delighted to officially open the Kingcraig School and Community Centre extension. I know the centre is hugely popular with the local community, particularly with families, so I am pleased we’ve been able to complete the extension to help continue that good work.’ Mr Jefferson added: ‘This is a prime example of how teamwork can make a real difference. By working together we’ve been able to help to
