Blackpool in line for new wildlife area and learning centre
B
lackpool could potentially become home for an exciting new £12,000 wildlife and learning centre after being given the green light for funding through a national recycling project run by supermarket giant Tesco.
Plans for the centre at Lawson Rd Allotments, part of the Blackpool Federation of Allotments, have been selected for possible funding through Tesco’s Bags of Help Scheme, which looks to reinvest funds generated through the Government’s new 5p carrier bag charge into important community projects. The scheme has been created by the Blackpool Federation of Allotment Association, in partnership with Blackpool Council and would enable visitors to learn about wildlife and the need to encourage its development. It would also focus on the benefits bees bring to our produce, fruit and flowers and give people a chance to experience growing their own vegetables from soil to plate. The scheme would also look at re- planting trees to encourage greater wildlife on allotments and form a learning centre where groups can do research on what they discover while visiting the area. Andy Percival & Derek Cooper, Joint Trustees of the 16
Blackpool Federation of Allotment Associations, said: “The scheme will revive some disused areas of the allotment and the new areas will allow all types of community use including the chance for school pupils & community groups of all ages to experience wildlife in a newly planted tree area. The initiative will also feature bee keeping hives and information for those who want to learn how to grow fresh vegetables. “People will also be able to plant their own seeds, watch them through the growing season and then harvest the produce to take home and eat. We also want to teach the benefits and needs of nature and wildlife especially on allotments as well as hopefully helping to improve the health and wellbeing of residents in the borough.” Councillor Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary for Blackpool Council, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for Blackpool to gain a wonderful new wildlife and learning centre which will bring great educational and lifestyle benefits to visitors young and old. “It is a very exciting project for the council to be involved with and we are delighted to be working with the Federation on such a positive initiative.”

Getting fresh with the Blackpool Food Partnership!

lackpool Food Partnership’s now collecting fresh fruit and vegetables for the first time and distributing it to 38 organisations across Blackpool.
And now Children’s Centres, hostels and community kitchens are benefiting from the generosity of facilities management company OCS – based locally at The Harbour, Blackpool - after it donated five fridges to help store surplus fruit and veg. Said BFP project manager and project co-ordinator Nikki Hart: “We’re now collecting produce from our new store partners My Local and Morrison’s as well as our existing partners Sainsbury’s and Booths, and also receiving food from local farms.” OCS has been working with the Partnership to provide advice and training on the storage of food as well as providing equipment. BFP has also received a financial donation from the OCS Family Foundation that’ll be used to train volunteers in food hygiene and provide additional equipment to meet the increasing demand.

Red Arrows to fly in for 2016 Air Show
T
he Red Arrows will grace the skies again at this year’s Blackpool Air Show, it has been announced.
The first planes announced to fly at this year’s Blackpool Air Show include the Typhoon, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster Bomber, as well as the world famous Red Arrows display team. The free seafront show, which features a whole host of incredible flying machines and attracts tens of thousands of people to the Promenade each year, will take place on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 August. The Red Arrows, known for their daring displays and breathtaking mid-air stunts, will perform on the Sunday, while a special Battle of Britain routine involving the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster Bomber will take to the skies on both days. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The Red Arrows are a huge favourite 28
with visitors to the Blackpool Air Show and it’s fantastic that we’ve agreed for them to come back again this year. “The Blackpool Air Show is always an important date in our calendar and I’m certain that this year will be no different. “The show brings in tens of thousands of people on to the Promenade and provides a huge boost to our local economy, with those visitors spending money in our shops and restaurants and supporting our jobs. “Last year’s air show was a huge hit with families and I’m certain that this year will be just as good.” The full line-up for the Air Show will be revealed in due course.
