BLACKPOOL CENTRAL SATURDAY DANCE AND STAGE ACTING SCHOOL FROM SEPTEMBER 2016
Twist Theatre School, a division of TalentCom Media Ltd shall be running dance and stage acting classes from £1.50 at Ibbison Court Community Centre on Central Drive in Blackpool from 3rd September 2016. All teachers are Disclosure and Barring Service checked and approved. Our acting classes include exploring the use of voice and body through physical and vocal exercises, drama games, improvisation, developing characters, rehearsing a scene from a play, approaches to acting technique, audition techniques and movement and mime. Currently the only dance classes are for street dance. Classes run between 4:30pm and 7:00pm. There are two age groups; 6-11 and 12-17 years. All abilities are welcome, no previous experience is required and there are no auditions. Enrolment is very simple. Complete the enrolment form online and pay a deposit of £10.00. Classes can be paid on a weekly basis and there is no minimum number of classes a student can attend. Principal and owner Daniel Twist is a member of British Actors’ Equity Association and is a BECTU film artiste.

Superstar Emily goes 12 years without a single day off school
M
eet Blackpool’s superstar school pupil.
Emily Platt, from Bispham in Blackpool, has never missed a day of school in her life, arriving at the school gates every morning without fail. The youngster, who completed her GCSEs this summer, will leave Blackpool’s Montgomery High School with an unblemished record, racking up a total of 2,280 consecutive school days. It’s a phenomenal achievement for pupil, who had spent her primary years at Westcliff Academy, also in the town. Emily, who walks in to school every morning, is believed to be one of the few pupils across the entire country who can make a claim to this perfect record. Not that it’s gone to her head. The shy 16 year old claims that she isn’t anyone special and is just doing what she’s supposed to. “It’s all quite embarrassing really,” she says. “I do enjoy school but you just have to go so that’s what I do. I’m not special. I just wake up and go out to school every day. I’ve done it all my life. There are some days that are a bit harder when you have to force your way out of bed but once I’m there you just wake up.”

She’s an eager learner and is very conscientious. “It’s extraordinary. The only time she was ill was when she got chicken pox at half term when she was five but she is generally just a very healthy girl. The schools have helped a lot too and I’ve always pushed to make sure that she goes in to school.” Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for school improvement, was keen to praise Emily as an example of one of the town’s top students: “Emily is a perfect pupil and is a model example to every child and parent in Blackpool, let alone the country. “The facts clearly show that pupils do better when they regularly attend school and I’m delighted for Emily.” As for Emily, despite over 2,000 continuous days at school she still can’t decide on a favourite teacher. “I like them all – they’ve all been really nice. I can’t pick my favourite one.”
The student has a keen passion for graphics and music and is hoping that her GCSE results will help her bag a place at a local sixth form to study them for A Levels. For the time being, however, Emily’s love of music means that she’s won an extra special prize for her extraordinary attendance. Blackpool awarded town’s first ever Blue Flag
B
lackpool beach has been labelled amongst some of the best in the world after being awarded its first ever Blue
Flag.
The stretch of beach at Blackpool South has been named in the list of Blue Flag beaches for 2016, putting it on a par with world renowned sites in all four corners of the globe, including in the Caribbean, Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific coastline. The stretch of beach, which is located opposite Blackpool Pleasure Beach, became eligible for Blue Flag status after being classed as having ‘excellent’ sea water quality by the Environment Agency last year. Blackpool is the only beach in the North West to have the prestigious Blue Flag in 2016 where its local facilities as well as access, cleanliness and public safety were assessed to make sure the beach reached Blue Flag’s very high international standards. The accolade is a remarkable turnaround for Blackpool’s beaches, where heavy investment coupled with work with businesses, communities and public sector partners has contributed to making sure the town has a coastline to be proud of. On top of the Blue Flag at Blackpool South, Blackpool North beach opposite the Tower, Blackpool Central beach and Bispham beach have also been given Seaside Award status.
“We are also delighted to welcome Blackpool South beach to the Blue Flag Award - the international standard for the best beaches in the world – for the first time.” United Utilities has invested more than £600m along the Fylde Coast on schemes to capture and treat wastewater since the early 1990s. Most recently, this included a huge storage tunnel system at Preston to improve the Ribble Estuary. The water company is carrying out a further £100m worth of infrastructure improvements across the Fylde coast, including the storm water storage tank and new outfall pipe at Anchorsholme Park. The public LOVEmyBEACH campaign has also helped to improve sea water quality, with messages around looking after the water reaching thousands of people across the North West, as well as hundreds of volunteers doing Fylde coast beach cleans and many local businesses signing up to be responsible companies.
The Blue Flag award scheme is run across the world but administered in the UK by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The Fylde Peninsula Water Management Partnership - made up of Blackpool Council, Wyre Borough Council, Fylde Borough Council, Lancashire County Council, Environment Agency, United Utilities, Merlin Entertainments and Keep Britain Tidy - is working with regional partnership ‘Turning tides’ towards making all eight bathing waters on the Fylde coast continue to pass the new bathing water standards.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Coastal Award Manager Paul Todd said: “It’s great that we’re able to award more beaches this year with Blue Flag and Seaside Awards.

Tower Burger Challenge Toppled at Genting Club, Blackpool

he Genting Club Blackpool is celebrating the first successful completion of its infamous Tower Burger Challenge by professional eater Randy Santel. The challenge, which took place on Saturday 11th June as part of Randy’s European Tour, involved the consumption of 2kg of food including four 6oz prime steak burgers, 200g bacon, 100g cheese, onion rings, a mountain of coleslaw and a kilo of fries, all within 15 minutes.

She does know basic commands and will do anything for a tennis ball. Storm isn’t suitable to live with other animals and does need further socialising around some dogs as she can be quite vocal. Barney came into our care via an RSPCA Inspector after being abandoned by his previous owner. He is a lovable boy who initially can be a little shy at times but once he feels safe and gets to know you he happily enjoys a gentle stroke. He is a special cat on a special renal diet which he loves and is looking for that loving person or family to give him the home he deserves. We will be attending this year; taking part in the parade which leaves St Paul’s Church at 11.30am before heading back to the centre to run a stall. Parks tunes in for bandstand sessions
A
packed calendar of music sessions will take place on Stanley Park bandstand this summer.
The musical fun takes place every Sunday in the park with a wide variety of brass, rock and soul bands taking to the stage. The events are free for everybody to attend and generally take place between 1pm and 4.30pm. As part of a one-off special concert, the Imperial College London’s Big Band will also play on Tuesday 5 July between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Musical au revoir for primary school leavers
M
ore than 500 talented Blackpool young musicians will be saying “au revoir” to primary school with a special concert at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 July.
‘Pop Idol of the Year’ and, ‘Musician of the Year 2016’.
The show will allow the children to showcase their talents and achievements from their time in primary school. This initiative also links in with the “Blackpool Passport” which gives every primary school child the opportunity to perform on a professional stage.
“We have some fantastically talented youngsters in Blackpool and this is another chance to show them off.”
The principal of the Au Revoir Review is for Year 6 children from Blackpool Primary Schools to put together a 12 minute performance themed around “celebration” and “moving on”. Performances include various music, songs, dances and drama. There will also be performances form the 38
Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary for Blackpool Council, said: “This promises to be a great event and the perfect end for children who are saying goodbye to primary school.
Tickets are on sale now at The Grand Theatre box office and cost £6.50. Each evening performance will commence at 7pm. Blackpool Music Service and Music Education Hub will be promoting this event. They are supported by Blackpool Council, the Arts Council and the Department for Education.
