VisitBlackpool and MTV Join Forces To Stage Blackpool’s Illuminations Switch-On Event

he Partnership Will Bring In Headline Acts To The Seaside Town
VisitBlackpool today announced that MTV, the world’s biggest youth entertainment and music brand, is set to deliver the 2017 Blackpool Illuminations SwitchOn event for the second year running, as part of an ongoing partnership. The event, which will take place on the evening of Friday 1st September, will build on the huge success of last year’s Switch On when UK artists including Diversity, The Vamps, Fleur East, Fatman Scoop, Imani, DJ Fresh and R3wire and Varski performed to more than 20,000 fans, culminating in Dame Barbara Windsor flicking on the switch to the famous lights.

Blackpool’s Mayor welcomes HMS Triumph’s Crew

0 officers and crew members of the Royal Navy’s HMS Triumph were given a warm welcome at a reception hosted by the Mayor of Blackpool, Cllr Kath Rowson. The Plymouth-based crew have enjoyed a close relationship with the town since the official ‘adoption’ of the submarine by Blackpool. Their invitation to attend the reception at the Town Hall took place in the same week the crew are spending a week in the town as Triumph is refitted following a lengthy tour of duty. The event also celebrated the success of a team from the submarine who valiantly cycled 400 miles to raise over £2,000 for Brian House Children’s Hospice. Accompanied by Mayoress Joan Goldin, the Mayor presented the Captain of the Triumph, Commander David Filtness with a Progress civic badge and the 20
Cdr returned the gesture by handing over a Royal Navy submariner badge and a framed photograph of HMS Triumph. The Mayor, said: “It was wonderful to welcome the company of HMS Triumph to the Town Hall. It is a very special relationship that we have with the crew. “I am also delighted by the kind and generous contributions that they are making to local charities and organisations such as Brian House Hospice. A really wonderful friendship has been built.” Members of the crew will be enjoying their stay in Blackpool but will also be volunteering two days of their time at Brian House to undertake work around the facility. Cdr Filtness, said: “HMS Triumph is proud to be affiliated with Blackpool. We enjoy particularly close ties to the town and it is a privilege to get to know the people and the place so much better.”

Red Arrows confirmed for Blackpool Air Show
T
he world-famous Red Arrows display team will return to Blackpool this summer to perform on BOTH days of the annual Air Show. It is the first time that the Red Arrows will feature on consecutive days of a Blackpool Air Show and this has been made possible through the switching of the free event to a Saturday and Sunday, rather than a Sunday and Monday as in previous years. The Red Arrows, one of the world’s foremost aerial aerobatic display teams will perform high above Blackpool Promenade on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August. The RAF Typhoon display team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are also confirmed for both days of this year’s show. The programme will also feature a whole host of incredible flying machines with details to be confirmed in coming weeks. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool 24
Council, said: “The Red Arrows are a huge favourite with visitors to the Blackpool Air Show and its truly fantastic news to hear that they will return to Blackpool for two days this year. “The Air Show is always an important date in our calendar and I’m certain that this year will be no different. “The show brings in tens of thousands of people on to the Promenade and provides a huge boost to our local economy, with those visitors spending money in our shops and restaurants and supporting our jobs. TYLER’S STORY By Abbie Kenyon — Aged 13 Years
Tyler was born on 12th June 2009. When he was a couple of months old Mum & Dad noticed something wasn’t quite right, Mum said he wasn’t developing normally. I was only 5 then so didn’t really understand what that meant. Mum & Dad took Tyler to the doctors and to the hospital for lots of appointments. Tyler used to go into hospital a lot and I remember feeling scared and wanted Mum to come home with Tyler because I missed them. Mum told me that Tyler had to have a MRI brain scan and he would have to be put to sleep, it all sounded really scary but Mum & Dad said that Tyler would be fine and lots of people have this done. Just before Tyler’s 2nd Birthday Mum & Dad got the results back from Tyler’s Brain Scan he was diagnosed with Severe Periventricular Leukomalacia , Thinning of the Corpus Callosum, Dandy Walker Syndrome & Cerebral Palsy. I was really sad and used to cry all the time because I didn’t really understand I just knew Tyler was going to be different from other children. I’ve since learnt more about this, yes my brother is very different but I’m not scared anymore because I understand it a bit better now. When Tyler was 2 and a half years old, my Mum decided that she would have to leave her job. A job I know she loved, but Mum said Tyler needed her at home as he needs full 24-hour care. All of a sudden I noticed all the strange looking stuff starting to arrive at our house,. Standing Frames, special chairs and Highchairs because Tyler couldn’t, stand or sit up properly. Mum was always rushing off to appointments with Tyler she used to have to take me with her sometimes as Dad had to work. I didn’t like going to these appointments, he had to have Physiotherapy, Speech and Language therapy, Horse Riding therapy, hospital appointments, and lots of different people coming into our house to speak to us about him, it was all really odd. My house is a lot different from my friends’ houses, we have stairgates at the top and bottom of the stairs they have to be locked all the time because if we don’t , he will fall down the stairs. Now 7, Tyler still has to wear nappies, Mum and Dad have to dress, shower him and sit with Tyler whilst he eats because he chokes on his food.

“Tyler is now 7 years old and he is the best little brother. He’s always so happy and tries to do everything I do , but he really struggles, Mum & Dad try so hard to treat him the same but this isn’t always easy..” The worst bit of all, is that Tyler still has to use a potty in the front room because Mum & Dad have worked really hard to get him potty trained in the day. It’s hard get him up and down the stairs now as he is getting bigger and heavier. I don’t like inviting my friends round because it’s embarrassing when he pulls his pants down and has a poo!! It’s also not fair on Tyler. Tyler can’t play on his own in his bedroom because he needs to be supervised all the time this is really sad. As he is getting bigger my Mum can’t keep going up and down stairs with him and I worry about these things. When Mum & Dad get older I know I’m going to become Tyler’s full time career because Tyler is really strong already and they won’t be able to do the things with him he needs. My Mum and Dad never complain they are always trying their very best for Tyler, me and my sisters. They always smile (even on very little sleep) are always positive and would be the first to help anybody.

Dandy Walker Syndrome: At some point during Mum having Tyler in her tummy his cerebellum had a pre-term insult and stopped developing. Your cerebellum controls your speech and language, balance and co-ordination. The bottom half of Tyler has the most damage so this effects his core and his little legs and feet. His toes are clawed so as he stands his toes are under his feet. Tyler balance is terrible he has no Spatial awareness and very small peripheral vision.

Cerebral Palsy: Tyler has increased tone in all his limbs which is due to the CP, that’s why he runs all the time and he finds it easier than walking. He has constant pain which goes hand in hand with the lack of sleep as he can’t relax because he's so stiff. Tyler also has severe development delay and distorted speech from the CP.
Severe Periventricular Leukomalacia:
Aged 1 - Playing board games with his sisters in his Heathfield chair, designed to promote correct posture.
Aged 2 - Tyler in his Standing frame to strengthen muscles in his legs & core
Aged 5 -Horse riding has been integral to helping Tyler sit correctly.
Aged 7—Tyler loves swimming, it really helps to relax his limbs and muscles.
Thinning of the corpus callosum: Brain damage from the lack of oxygen again coupled with the Cerebral Palsy and Dandy Walker Syndrome doesn't help his case. He is also Hyperactive and has slight Autism

Prior to rehoming we carry out home checks of all porspective new owners and foster carers and we ask for an adoption donation of around £35 (adult cat) £40 (kitten). Pensioners’ Parliament 2017
H
undreds of older campaigners are expected to gather in Blackpool for the annual three-day, NPC Pensioners’ Parliament from 6-8 June 2017. The event always starts with a colourful and noisy march through the town centre, followed by a rally with a number of well known speakers. Full details of these will be available shortly.
Day two will include sessions on the future of state and occupational pensions, the NHS, what Brexit means for older people, the impact of devolution on services, transport issues and local campaigning, and delegates will also be able to pick up useful information from a range of expert speakers as well as ask questions and give their own views. There will also be a lively exhibition area, extra activities going on during the conference and a popular social evening.
The final morning we hope will feature a panel of MPs to discuss the crisis in social care and debate what can be done to find a solution. One of the ways we can build the pensioner movement is through attending the Pensioners’ Parliament. It promotes a shared identity and unity in campaigning, as well as providing the opportunity to meet old and new friends and to socialise. We hope you will decide to be a part of this unique experience. We know you will enjoy it if you do.
