Big smiles for ‘golden’ youngsters These young people have a good reason to smile.

ach one of them has completed their prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award in the last year, after over a year of hard work on gruelling survival and volunteering skills. In total, 27 young people from across Blackpool have achieved their gold award this year, taking each of them over 18 months to complete, as well as out on tough expeditions all over Europe. As part of completing their gold award, the students had to complete tasks in five different criteria including volunteering, physical, skill, residential and expedition. The expedition element of the award involves students travelling self-sufficiently over a period of four days through wild countryside, with some of the young people trekking as far away as Ireland and Spain to undertake the challenge. To congratulate the students on their hard work, Mayor of Blackpool Peter Callow and Mayoress Maxine Callow met each of them in Blackpool Town Hall to present them with their gold badges and a local certificate, ahead of them travelling to St James’ Palace in London to receive their gold certificate from the Duke of Edinburgh himself.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is delivered by three groups across Blackpool: Blackpool Sixth Form, The Windmill Youth Group and The Open Access Group. £6m energy improvement fund available for Lancashire residents Over the next year £6m will be up for grabs to enable Lancashire residents to get energy saving measures to keep their homes warm and their bills down.

osy Homes in Lancashire (CHIL), which launches today, will provide free or subsidised boilers and insulation measures as part of a partnership between every council in Lancashire and a number of energy industry companies. That means that, depending on the type of energy efficiency measures you need and your personal circumstances, almost all residents could benefit; some to the tune of thousands of pounds. It’s easy. Experienced local company Firefly Energi are managing the scheme with a number of trusted installers responsible for fitting the heating and insulation measures into homes. At present, the private market for energy efficiency work can be complex and difficult to navigate for the ordinary householder. This is compounded by the high number of ‘hard-totreat’ older properties that require expensive measures to improve them. The eligibility criteria for accessing grants directly from energy companies can be arbitrary and the quality of work done by private contractors can vary significantly. Sadly there are even some rogue contractors looking to scam vulnerable households. The CHiL scheme offers local people an accessible and straightforward alternative that they can trust. Private landlords and organisations working with clients who could benefit are also encouraged to get in touch. Beyond the core work of heating and insulation measures, the scheme will also develop offers for households around renewable energy technologies and energy tariff switching. Keep Britain Tidy Blackpool Council announces new anti-litter partnership with Keep Britain Tidy
B
lackpool Council and environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy have signed up to a new partnership aimed at making the town the cleanest seaside resort in the UK by 2020. The project will see the two parties put together a five year plan to prevent the root causes of litter by working with residents, visitors and businesses to reduce packaging, increase effective litter disposal and encourage social responsibility. It is hoped businesses and residents will get behind the project to make the town a better place for everyone. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Keep Britain Tidy is the national leader in reducing littering and so we’re absolutely delighted to be announcing this innovative new partnership with them. “We know that keeping the streets clean is a huge priority for residents and everyone also knows that our resources are diminishing every year meaning we have fewer and fewer staff to tidy up after people. “As a result, it’s absolutely vital we prevent littering at the source by encouraging and enabling people to take responsibility for their waste.” Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison OgdenNewton, said: “We are delighted to be working with Blackpool Council on this ambitious project. Keep Britain Tidy has a long track record of working with communities, local authorities and businesses to tackle the problems of littering and fly-tipping. It is only by working together that we can make the difference we all want to see.” The campaign follows on from the success of the North West’s LOVEmyBEACH campaign, which Blackpool 34
has been heavily involved in, which has encouraged responsible citizenship to improve bathing water standards and beach cleanliness throughout the region. Initiatives have included volunteer-led beach cleans, working with businesses to ensure they are disposing of waste in an environmentally friendly way and working with schools and colleges to educate young people with a view to creating an improved culture of social responsibility in the future. LOVEmyBEACH has been a huge success in getting local communities, businesses, schools and volunteers to help North West beaches have even cleaner seas, with many proudly displaying Seaside Awards. A cabinet member decision, by Cllr Campbell, has now been agreed, authorising council officers to commence work with Keep Britain Tidy to begin the project. A maximum of £24,500 has been set aside to plan and develop a strategy. So far, no changes to any policies have been made and won’t be until the plan is developed, however, the report suggests the possibility of looking at changes in the future including setting a new goal of creating a “litter free Blackpool” and making the town “the cleanest seaside resort in the UK by 2020”. It also suggests the possibility of increased work to encourage people to dispose of waste, greater engagement with the public and increased civil enforcement penalties against those who drop litter. A further report will be produced once a strategy has been put together.
