South Africa Crowned Champions at the World Fireworks Championships Blackpool 2017
A
team of pyrotechnic virtuosos hailing from South Africa have conquered the competition at the World Fireworks Championship Blackpool.
Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The championships are a firm favourite in the Blackpool calendar and they have been truly fantastic this year with an exceptionally high standard of display.
Fireworks for Africa saw off competition from teams from Poland and France with a spectacular display during week three of this year’s championship.
“The event is always incredibly popular with residents and visitors with more and more people each year extending their fireworks visit by taking in the Illuminations and LightPool projections.
Founded in 1996, Fireworks for Africa has steadily grown with the demand for quality fireworks and pyrotechnics shows from their office in Johannesburg, South Africa. Travis Yeatman, Technical Director for Fireworks for Africa, travelled overseas to oversee the display last Friday. The team’s success was announced tonight as UK’s favourite pyrotechnic team, Titanium, put on a spectacular show to close this year’s spectacular competition. The free annual event is among the most popular features in Blackpool’s exciting calendar, featuring jaw-dropping displays – synched to music – from some of the most talented and technically gifted fireworks engineers in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the Blackpool’s promenade each week. 18
“Our congratulations go to all the teams who took part, but particularly to the winners, Fireworks for Africa, who did South Africa proud with a superb show.” The winner was chosen by a panel of local judges including Cllr Gillian Campbell; Peter Sedgewick, owner of Blackpool’s piers; and Cheryl Tchobanian, owner of the Beach House Bar and Bistro who again sponsored the judges area. The championship might be over, but the Blackpool Illuminations are still shining! Beef, Shallot and Sweet Potato Curry This rich, fragrant curry is a recipe to treasure, and one that you’ll want to make again and again. Boldly spiced, it is seriously tasty and yet easy to make. Serves 4 - 6
Ingredients: 800g rump beef cut into cubes 3 tbsp sesame oil 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed 16 shallots peeled and left whole 4 cloves of garlic (crushed) 1 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli, seeded and finely diced 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp ground cinnamon ½ cinnamon stick 1 tbsp curry powder ½ tsp black pepper 4 lemon rind strips 250 ml thick coconut milk 125 ml beef stock 1 tsp sugar Sea salt and black pepper

Preparation Time; 20 minutes Cooking Time; 1 hour ¼
Method: Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy based saucepan and seal the meat in batches. Remove the meat from the pan and keep warm. Add the sesame seed oil and the shallots to the pan and sauté for 2 – 3 minutes, then add the sweet potatoes, crushed garlic, ginger, turmeric, curry powder, chilli, ground cinnamon, cinnamon stick and black pepper and cook for 2 minutes making sure the spices are cooked and sizzling. Add the beef, lemon rind, coconut milk and stock. Season well with the sea salt and the sugar. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. If, after this time the gravy is not thick enough, then raise the heat and cook rapidly until the gravy has thickened. Serve with steamed Thai rice.

Charity fundraiser success for Streetlife
V
olunteers from Streetlife, the resort’s homeless charity alongside volunteers from the Blackpool’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award have raised £260 for the charity. The fundraiser, held in St John’s Square helped to raise awareness of youth homelessness in Blackpool as well as boost the profile of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Seven young people taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme worked alongside young people who are currently receiving support from Streetlife running stalls, and helped to manage the raffle, face painting and donations. Members of the public were encouraged to get involved with a number of activities including hook-aduck, tin can valley and taking selfies with Pooh Bear. They also had an opportunity to have a tour around Streetlife’s shelter, which is next door to St John’s Church. Streetlife is a charity working with vulnerable young people between the ages of 16 to 25 years in Blackpool, providing advice and guidance, emergency accommodation and a wide range of support from the 22
day centre. Klingons on the Blackpool Tower
A
new and exclusive Star Trek 3D projection show has been unveiled as Blackpool gears up for its busiest weeks of the season.
The short film, which has been produced in association with CBS and Netflix, is being projected on to the front of The Blackpool Tower building each night as part of the LightPool shows which run throughout the Blackpool Illuminations season until Sunday 5 November. It has been created to coincide with the worldwide launch of Star Trek: Discovery, a brand new TV series, the first episode of which was aired towards the end of September. The collaboration comes just weeks after the Star Trek franchise teamed up with dance group, Diversity, to switch on the Blackpool Illuminations. In a unique arrangement, Gabriel Lorca (actor Jason Isaacs), the captain of the Discovery, was beamed on to a giant screen on the Tower Festival Headland to help trigger an explosion of lights, fireworks and confetti, and kick-start 66 nights of Illuminations. The Star Trek projection complements two other space-themed shows within the free-to-watch LightPool programme. 24
Down The Rabbit Hole portrays an astronaut exploring new worlds and Chasing Stars, featuring a voiceover by Captain Tim Peake, presents an intergalactic tour aimed at inspiring the next generation. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to unveil the Star Trek 3D projection show in time for the October half-term holidays. “The Switch-On event and the creation of this film have cemented what was already a strong relationship with the Star Trek franchise given that we have the permanent exhibition on the Golden Mile and features within the Illuminations. “We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic global franchise.” Star Trek is one of the most influential global television franchises and is returning to television 50 years after it was first broadcast. The new Discovery series follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and lifeforms. It features a new ship, characters and missions. Blackpool joins celebrations as Lancashire becomes first White Ribbon County
L
ancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw is leading celebrations as his bid to make Lancashire the first White Ribbon county in the UK has resulted in public sector organisations across the county being accredited by the White Ribbon Campaign.
Secretary for Resilient Communities, said: “A campaign such as White Ribbon focuses attention on what are despicable acts of violence against women and the distress of people who witness it.
Blackpool on behalf of the Blackpool Domestic Abuse & Interpersonal Violence (DAIV) Partnership has now received White Ribbon status along with all Lancashire district councils, Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire County Council, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and several health bodies.
“Blackpool Council is proud to have been awarded White Ribbon status and applaud all those involved in working to achieve this accreditation for so many organisations across the county.”
Blackpool’s White Ribbon status marks a commitment and resolve to educate and raise awareness of violence against women and engaging men in this campaign. This involved each organisation developing an action plan to support raising awareness of the anti-Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) campaign, including nominating of at least four male ambassadors to help take the campaign forward. The Commissioner was joined by Chief Constable Andy Rhodes in hosting a celebration event at the Harris Museum in Preston today, 3 October 2017, to mark the occasion. Events were also held in Blackpool, Burnley and Pendle.
“By actively engaging more men in the debate about the issues we are taking a positive step towards driving greater awareness of this type of violence in our communities.
The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest global effort of men working to end male violence against women and Mr. Grunshaw has supported the campaign since he first took office in 2012. Supporters of the campaign are asked to pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about men’s violence against women in all its forms. Speaking at the event in Preston, Mr Grunshaw said: “Supporting vulnerable people and victims is a key priority in my Police and Crime plan so I am delighted to see Lancashire become the first White Ribbon County. “My office and partner organisations have been working towards countywide accreditation over the past year and it’s fantastic to see this work pay off.
Commissioner Grunshaw and Chief Constable Rhodes accepted the official accreditation from White Ribbon UK alongside representatives from Lancashire County Council as other community leaders from across Lancashire also joined in the celebration.
“Violence against women and girls is unacceptable and shockingly over 90% of domestic abuse is witnessed by children. This has to stop and anything we can do to tackle the issue and get people talking about it has to be a good thing.
Blackpool held its own event at the Winter Gardens today (3 Oct) to mark the occasion which was attended by a wide range of stakeholders who signed the White Ribbon Pledge. Attendees included Blackpool Council, Blackpool Teaching Hospital, Lancashire Constabulary, local Domestic Abuse Service Providers, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the National Probation Service.
“The White Ribbon Campaign is about raising awareness and speaking out against violence and abuse and I am proud to support this. I have made specialist support for victims available through Lancashire Victim Services and I would urge anyone affected to contact the service.”
