Blackpool launches the 2017 Illuminations
T
his year’s Blackpool Illuminations display will shine brighter than ever – thanks to the support of the business community. The main Illuminations display, which runs from September 1 to November 5, will include several new sponsored features and during October half-term there will be a free festival of entertainment featuring the first ever parade of Blackpool’s world-famous illuminated trams. The biggest new investment comes courtesy of Genting Casino in the form of a new road section featuring giant twinkling illuminated castles. Curated by Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and working alongside our in-house designer Sarah Barton this section is set to become a firm favourite in years to come. Inspired by the huge Illuminations archive, the 2017 display will include the new Carleton Fountains in full 3D these classic features combine tradition and modernity by combining old school manufacturing methods and the very latest LED lighting to create a wonderful addition to the display. This has been created through a partnership with the Best Western Carlton Hotel. A special section in the Golden Mile will be home to New Bonny Street Market a historic attraction featuring in the Illuminations for the first time, with a series of family friendly images and colourful lights. A classic is reborn as the legendary ‘Fire and Water’ tableau is reimagined as the ELGIN tableau. Completely refurbished for 2017 the tableau will feature a brand new lighting system and projected images. Returning favourites include Beach House Boulevard, Mandarin Lanterns, Bling, Star Trek, Dynamo, Ballroom Glitz, KRS Mirrorball arches, Art for Walls, McDonalds, Logo Lights and Head Lights will make up all of the 2017 display. Visitors will be greeted by an enhanced welcome experience at the north and south arrival points in order to encourage visitors to donate to the free 16
attraction. T h e LightPool programme returns for a third successive year and will see the return of the three major 3D mapping projection shows, combining fairytale, fantasy and fact that will be displayed every evening throughout the Illuminations on the Tower Buildings from w/c 4th September. LightPool, which proved a hugely popular addition to last year’s Illuminations display, is aimed at reinventing the Illuminations display by getting visitors out of their cars to experience the show in a different way. The popular LightPool Village is returning located on the Comedy Carpet, this year the village will be open both day and night (days may vary, see website for details). Featuring live music, alongside the 3D projections show visitors will be able to stop off for light refreshments and pick up a photo souvenir to share with all the family. The Festival@LightPool event will be held on and around the Tower Festival Headland from Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 October and will feature spectacular live entertainment between 5pm and 7pm each night. On all three nights, visitors will be able to watch performances of Spark! by Worldbeaters Music – a unique and thrilling show that combines high-impact drumming, superb choreography and stunning lighting design – as well as amazing sound and light performances by musician AFISHAL. Blackpool Council continues to fund the Illuminations show, but increasingly it relies on donations from the general public or businesses All donations received is reinvested into the design and creation of new displays and experiences for future generations. New work and health centre launched
A
new work and health hub designed and funded by Blackpool Council has officially opened its doors.
The HealthWorks brings together a range of employment, health and lifestyle advice for local residents to help them gain and sustain jobs, as well as improve their overall health and wellbeing. Located in the heart of Blackpool town centre HealthWorks is now home to support services including employment and self-employment advice, careers advice, online job search, work placements, benefits checks, debt and money advice, talking therapy and access to health coaches. £800,000 has been invested to modernise vacant council office space at Clifton Street, the former home of the Tourist Information Centre and other backoffice teams. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader, Responsible for Economic Growth and Employment, said: “Evidence shows that that work is good for your health, but worklessness has the opposite effect. This important initiative redoubles our efforts to provide quality employment and health advice to residents who need our help, delivered from a fantastic new facility.
“7 in 10 of Blackpool’s working age benefit claimants have some form of limiting physical or mental health condition. We cannot ignore this challenge if we are to increase our overall employment rate. There are a wide range of partners and employers who are helping the council to achieve this goal.” HealthWorks includes a £2m Mental Health and Employment Trailblazer, one of only three in the country, trialling the impact of combining specialist employment advice with talking therapies for out of work residents with unmet mental health needs such as depression and anxiety. The trial is co-delivered with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals’ Supporting Minds service. Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary, Responsible for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Some residents living in Blackpool face challenges which can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Many people do want to make a change and improve their health - eat healthier, do more exercise, drink less, stop smoking or feel less isolated but they need motivation and advice on how to go about making ‘doable’ lifestyle changes. “That’s where HealthWorks and the Healthy Lifestyle team come in, to empower people to take simple manageable steps to better health.”

Community Learning Success
B
lackpool Coastal Housing has been working hard to achieve its vision of ‘inspiring people to build better communities’ by adopting new and innovative approaches to assist residents into work and training. In collaboration with Blackpool and The Fylde College, the Community Learning programme was launched to provide functional skills courses in the heart of our local communities by using our estate-based community centres.
Since the project launched in October 2016, over 20 customers have gained qualifications in a range of subjects, including English, Maths, Employability and Caring for Children. The project was set up to develop a way of helping our customers to access free training opportunities by removing some of the barriers they face such as travel costs and child care issues. By working in partnership with the College, our Community Learning project has helped over 20 residents gain qualifications, ranging from Entry Level 1 to Level 1. The project has been a resounding success, and testament to this is the learners who, at the start of the courses were unable to read and write, have developed these skills in a short space of time. This project has provided a number of additional positive outcomes - one learner has gained part time employment and is now equipped with the confidence to seek further job opportunities. Others have moved onto further study at the College or are volunteering within their local community.
“We recognise the value of learning in the community and see it as creating a pathway into the college, to employment as well as helping someone to better access the community in which they live. I’m very proud of our learners and the work the partnership has achieved over the past 9 months.” Wendy Hirst, Curriculum Manager in Access and Continuing Education at B&FC, said: “It was a pleasure to partner with Blackpool Coastal Housing to deliver a functional skills in the community programme and see the impact that has had for many residents. “The project helped service-users gain valuable English and maths skills and has seen a number of them receive recognised qualifications, while all of them benefitted from developing their skills and confidence. “Some students came to class at the start of the programme unable to read and write and were able to build those skills over the duration. Other students improved their confidence to such an extent they now feel comfortable in taking part in group discussions. “These students overcame significant barriers by attending the classes and it was wonderful to see their confidence growing every week. “We plan to continue with this successful programme and incorporate employability skills - to help support these students to get back into employment.”
Two of our learners on the English and Maths courses were recently shortlisted for the Student of the Year award at Blackpool and The Fylde College’s Access and Continuing Education Awards Day held in June. Ann Jones and Paul Naylor were both recognised for their commitment in attending the courses and their willingness to learn.
