Soroptimists have it wrapped up.

W

inter’s coming and Blackpool and District Soroptimists have been busy knitting miniature hats for the “Big Knit”.

it costs to do that. We need to raise as much money as we can so that help is available, where needed, to ensure that no older person is at risk from the cold this winter.

Julie Patel, Club President said, ‘As a group we support lots of different causes on all levels but the Big Knit campaign allows us to be creative and have fun, whilst offering support to a part of the community that will affect us all’.

‘The Big Knit campaign couldn’t happen without the support of thousands of amazing people across the UK who take part and knit woolly hats to adorn Innocent smoothies each year,’ - Douglas Lamont, CEO at Innocent drinks.

The Big Knit is a joint campaign between Age UK and Innocent drinks to help vulnerable older people. You knit the hats, Innocent drinks wear them and a donation from every drink sold goes to Age UK. Each one of the donations will support Age UK to help older people during the cold winter months. Marjorie Stainton a volunteer at Age Uk said “I have been involved with the Big Knit since 2003. Firstly with Age Concern in Preston and now with Age UK Blackpool and District. I belong to a knitting group which enjoys knitting for charity so this time of the year it is all about the Big Knit. As an older person myself I can appreciate just how important it is to keep the cold at bay and how much 12

The Soroptimist group helps various campaigns and charities as well as being a social group. The Club, chartered in 1961 as S.I. Blackpool and incorporating S.I. Fleetwood in 2004, is friendly and outwardlooking - currently involved in a range of projects including domestic violence and supporting the President’s charity. Club members come from a range of backgrounds, including health, law, farming, finance and education. Club meetings take place at the North Shore Golf Club. Blackpool named as the second best shoreline

B

lackpool boasts seven miles of golden sands with award-winning theme parks and attractions - and now a new study has praised it for having the second best shoreline in the world.

It was pipped to the top spot by Dubai, while the Gulf of Mexico sailed in at third place. The locations were rated based on the clarity of the horizon, sea colour, sand quality, cleanliness, interesting features, air quality and the weather. The new study, commissioned by Royal Caribbean, was spearheaded by psychologist, Dr David Holmes. He went about formulating a mathematical equation in a bid to scientifically prove which shoreline is the most seductive. The seaside resort scored highly for its clean Blue Flag beaches and interesting features such as the world-famous Blackpool Tower, with only the British weather keeping it from the number one slot. Others to make the top ten were Cape Town in South Africa, Cavelossim in India, Krabi in Thailand and Whitehaven Beach in Australia. Touching on the results, Dr Holmes said: “While this formula may not account for every eventuality, the 16

top ten hopefully helps holidaymakers identify the shorelines which are, scientifically, most impactful. “All countries have good and bad shorelines; however some are stunning in their unpretentious beauty combined with iconic features. Shorelines such as Dubai in UAE score well across all elements of the formula, whilst others such as Inchydoney in Ireland offer wonderful experiences with the added benefit of attracting smaller crowds.” It’s great news for Blackpool and only highlights how much the resort has developed in recent years. The resort has seen continued investment including 350million spent on upgrading the promenade and sea wall defences to the investment in improving Blackpool’s sea water and beaches. THE BEST SHORELINES IN THE WORLD 2016 1 Dubai, United Arab Emirates 2 Blackpool, United Kingdom 3 Gulf of Mexico, United States of America 4 Cape Cod National Seashore, USA 5 Inchydoney, West Cork, Ireland 6 Twelve Apostles, Victoria, Australia 7 Cape Town, South Africa 8 Cavelossim, Goa, India 9 Krabi, Thailand 10 Whitehaven Beach, Whitehaven Islands, Australia

Gardening project helps community bloom

A

community gardening project is helping to brighten up lives in South Shore.

As part of the transience project in South Beach, tools for the gardening have also been donated by Blackpool Council, with the help of local ward councillors Graham Cain and Jim Hobson.

The project at St Peter’s Church on Lytham Road is aiming to clean up the parish garden and use it to grow herbs and vegetables which can then be used to help feed the local community.

Cllr Cain, said: “We’re trying to make Bloomfield area a nicer place for people to live, while also giving the community the tools they need to help themselves.

The gardening classes are part of a regular drop-in session which takes place at the church every Friday afternoon. The South Beach drop-in sessions, which are hosted between the church, the council and Bay Housing Association, help local residents in the area to get weekly information and advice about issues, from making sure people have the right housing and jobs support to providing them with use of computers and laptops to carry out weekly tasks. The church also provides food parcels to visitors on behalf of the Blackpool Food Partnership. The drop-in sessions are all about building more resilience in the local community so people are able to help themselves and the gardening project is aimed to help residents take more pride in their local area, as well as learning key growing and nutritional skills. 18

“Gardening is a great way of bringing a community together, as everybody can get involved and see the benefits that a nice looking garden can bring. At the same time we’re teaching people skills that will help them in their everyday life to find work or make friends.” Cllr Hobson added: “The Friday drop-in sessions are a really important way of helping the community to carry out daily tasks, without them becoming too reliant on our services. “We’re teaching them resilience around getting help with housing or finding a job and these new gardening sessions will teach them useful horticultural skills around growing their own food and nutrition. “The church has been extremely helpful in letting us use their garden for the project and hopefully if it’s successful we’ll be able to roll it out to other areas of South Shore in the near future.”

LEFT: Catlow, BELOW: I Drink Therefore There’s Darkness BOTTOM: Eye The Bomb

A not so silent night As some of Blackpool’s finest musical acts once again take to the stage to reinterpret classic Christmas songs

B

ack for it’s ninth season following last years triumphant return after a two year break, ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ is not just an average local gig. Over 14 of the Fylde’s finest local acts will once again take to the stage in a single night, packed tighter than Santa’s sack, to smash out their own takes on Christmas classics as well as a couple of their own tunes. The event started back in 2005 at the long since defunct South Shore music venue Riffs before moving to The Blue Room in Blackpool town centre after Riffs closure. However the curse of the ever evaporating Blackpool music venue struck once again with The Blue Room (Version 1) closing in 2013 (some may argue in part due to the bands polluting the atmosphere with terrible Christmas music) leaving ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ without a home. The night faded into the annals of Blackpool music history never to be heard of again. However the event, much like big screen adaptations of Spiderman and Keith Richards, AVMC refused to lay down and die and with the opening of the 26

Bootleg Social Club on Topping Street two years ago the organisers felt that ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ had once again found a home, last years event proved to be a massive success cementing the future of ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ as it enters it’s second year at it’s new home. A Very Messy Christmas 9 will once again see the return of regular acts I Drink Therefore There’s Darkness, Eye The Bomb, Dü Pig, Uncle Paul, Kraul, The Drop-out Wives, Catlow and The Penwarden Super Showcase performing the finest Christmas covers available. New acts to grace the festive stage this year are CSOD, Nana White Pepper, Random House, Elizabeth Preston and The Bootleg Social Club Band. There will be more line-up announcements on the facebook event page over the coming weeks. A Very Messy Christmas 9 at Bootleg Social Club, Topping Street, Blackpool. Friday 23rd December 2015 at 9pm. www.bootlegsocial.co.uk www.facebook.com/averymessy
