Retiring abroad
I
’ve always wanted to retire to the seaside. A couple of weeks ago we went to Bournemouth for a few days. Miles of sand, rolling waves crashing on the shore and blue skies overhead. Strolling along the pier with our elderly Jack Russell in tow, eating ice cream and sipping cappuccino. So what’s the problem? The weather of course. Let’s get serious and look at the options. Where would we really want to live out our twilight years? We love Malta and know it pretty well so that’s probably where we would like to retire. But how idyllic would it really be? Let’s have a look at the pros and cons. The cost of living in Malta can be pretty cheap compared to some other European countries. As the weather is warm and sunny 300 days of the year there’s no high energy bills as you won’t need central heating for half the year as you do here. And you can cook out whenever you like. Food is relatively inexpensive (we usually shop at Scotts in Burmerrad, but were told last time by the Maltese that it’s ‘really expensive’ compared to local supermarkets). They’ve obviously never been to Waitrose. However, the price of eating out in top restaurants can be a shock, especially if you are really choosy. For me any restaurant serving locally caught fish and a glass of Prosecco is fine, but then I am not a gourmet! Public transport is also cheap but buses can be overcrowded and go right past your stop in high season and can be infrequent out of season, but the locals seem

to manage so I’m sure we could if we had to. However, there seem to be more old bangers on the road in Malta than here so I’m sure we could buy a cheap car if we needed to. Something fast, sleek and expensive is somewhat wasted on an island 27km long by 15km wide even though roads tend to be winding so a trip from one end to the other is far longer. Renting an apartment long-term is supposedly easy and inexpensive compared to the UK so in theory we should be able to find a two bed flat for around £500 a month and rent out our three bed semi for nearer £1,000 leaving us the difference to live on (plus pension and savings). Until we make it permanent and sell up here that is. So far so good but this is dependent on where you choose to live. Inland towns such as Mosta and Naxxar are going to be miles cheaper than for instance trendy Sliema or St Julians where ex-pats tend to congregate, but wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of living by the sea? We discovered Mellieha a few years ago so that would probably be our first choice or somewhere in the St Paul’s Bay region. As far as crime is concerned Malta is very safe with violent crime being around 0.3 incidents per 1000 population. Pick-pocketing and burglary are on the increase but still nowhere near average EU levels. More of a shock for the Maltese who often don’t bother to lock their houses when popping out to the shops. English is an official language in Malta (as well as Maltese) so that’s not a problem, though if you move permanently it is only good manners to learn Maltese, otherwise you will not be accepted as a true resident of the island. Unfortunately, Maltese (being Arabic and Italian based) is, unlike for instance Spanish, a very difficult language to learn. You’ll be congratulated if you do though.

Roads are much better though these days with new bypasses and a huge improvement to the Salina Coast Road – a picturesque drive from the north of the island to Valetta, avoiding the traffic jams in Mosta. Healthcare is free (though will this still apply when we leave the EU) and Malta is among the top six countries in the EU for the quality of its care. However, you can take out private plans for as little as £90 a year to approx. £350 a year, which allow you to attend various private clinics and hospitals and avoid the horrendous queues at public clinics. The lifestyle in Malta can be laid back and slow-paced so if you are of an impatient disposition and expect people to jump to your command, then it’s probably not for you. However, the Maltese people are some of the nicest and kindest you will meet anywhere, and will go out of their way to help you and you will rarely find yourself being ‘conned’ or taken advantage of. Finally, there is religion. Almost entirely Roman Catholic, Malta has a church on every corner and some kind of Festa every week in some part of the country or other. The Festa in Mellieha in September goes on for four days which is great except when your plane lands at one o’clock in the morning, you get to bed at 2.30am and the bells start ringing at 8am. I have not mentioned jobs or education as neither apply to me but I would like to think I could still do something while living there. I’ve always fancied being a tour guide in Mdina. Probably voluntary (I currently volunteer for the Cheltenham Festivals – literature and science not the horse racing - and also for the National Trust so I’m an old hand at this). I don’t speak Maltese of course but I wouldn’t be guiding the indigenous population. I’d be guiding the Brits and the Americans,
walking round holding a banner so they can find me if they get lost – pretty hard to do in Mdina as it’s so tiny. But then it is a warren of narrow streets so maybe ‘if you get lost we’ll be at the Fontanella café in an hour’ would do the trick. I have read up on it and I’m not sure it’s quite that simple but I can always sell deckchairs on the beach instead. Unfortunately, the ones who do that tend to be young, male, tattooed and muscular and can carry four sun loungers on their heads in one go. So it looks like I’ll be on turtle watch on Golden Bay as I think I can probably manage that. At the moment there is only one thing that stands in the way - two if you include the logistics of moving the dog – and that is family. I would miss my sons, their wives and my two granddaughters (plus any more grandchildren that follow) too much to move permanently, even though they can all visit whenever they want. Though not at the same time. Then there is my husband’s disabled mother, though she could come over and stay for as long as she likes. In fact most of our relatives are already queueing up to ‘visit’. So we have come up with a compromise. Six months in Malta and six months at home. The main problem is which six months. Summer in Malta is very hot but if we go eg Jan to June the first few months won’t be that nice but at least it will be better than here. We could go Sept – Feb but that leaves us away over Christmas and again not good weather for much of it. So it looks like it will have to be April – September and we will have to hide during July and August. Then we come home to the worst six months in England, but at least we’d be here over Christmas. Decisions decisions! But the first thing we need to do is get rid of the clutter in our house so we can rent it out while we are away. And that’s going to be quite a job, believe me.
