Known as the biggest night in the resort’s calendar, the event takes place on the Tower Festival Headland on Friday 2 September and will feature a host of top music stars as well as the big moment when the resort’s stunning light display is turned on. And the best thing is, it’s free to attend – all you have to do is enter the ballot to win wristbands. People can now put their name in the hat by registering at www.visitblackpool.com/switchon for their chance to receive up to four wristbands per household. Last year, around 80,000 people applied for tickets to attend the event. For this year’s Switch-On Weekend, Nickelodeon UK & Ireland have partnered with Blackpool Council to present the UK’s first ever Nickelodeon’s SLIMEFEST , which will see two ticketed live concerts in the Winter Gardens on Saturday 3 September, and a free outdoor Nickelodeon festival on the headland on both the Saturday and Sunday. Further details on the Saturday and Sunday events will be announced soon. Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council: “Switch-On night is without doubt the biggest night in Blackpool’s calendar and is unbelievably popular with more than 80,000 people applying for tickets last year. “Last year’s Switch-On was a huge success. Not only did we have11 Hollywood royalty flicking the switch but a fantastic concert, headlined by The Vamps, was a big hit too.

“It will be difficult to follow that this year but we’re confident of delivering another top quality lineup and a stunning show to start off the Blackpool Illuminations season with a bang. “This year’s Switch-On weekend will be the biggest ever – with the free three day festival on the headland complemented by two exciting ticketed SLIMEFEST concerts in the Winter Gardens. “It promises to be a brilliant weekend of entertainment kicked off by the free Switch-On party on the Friday night. “That’s not to be missed and I would urge people to apply for their wristbands now – it could be the best free night out you’ll ever have.” With a capacity of 20,000 for Switch-On night, the event will be held on the Tower Festival Headland and attracts visitors from all over the UK as well as locals who will have a dedicated allocation of tickets just for them. How to organise a small street party to celebrate

the Queen’s 90th Birthday Communities up and down the country are being encouraged to celebrate the Queen’s birthday with their own small street party on the 12th June coinciding with The Patron’s Lunch, and taking place on The Mall this summer. With the government making it as easy as possible for us all to get involved, now’s the time to get organised. Here’s some information to get you started...

l Organising a street party for neighbours and residents doesn’t need a licence, but you will need to contact your council at least 4-6 weeks in advance. You’ll also need to complete a simple form. l If you want to close a road your council may have set a deadline, if you’ve left it too late consider a simple ‘street meet’ on private land, front gardens or drives. l Food licences aren’t needed for one-off events such as street parties, but guidance on providing food, safe to eat, can be found on the FSA and NHS websites and should be followed. l Speak to your local council about insurance; many council authorities don’t insist on having insurance in place. As organisers you may decide to take out a policy anyway. Websites such as ‘Streets Alive’ and ‘Big Lunch’ both offer advice. l A music licence isn’t needed if music isn’t going to be the main purpose of your street party. l The ‘street party’ website is a great source for guidance. Blackpool youngsters hone their soccer skills at Stanley Park Festival

ver 60 football mad youngsters from schools across Blackpool converged on Stanley Park to try and sharpen up their burgeoning soccer skills as part of a special Early Years Football Festival. The pupils, all aged between 4 and 5, came from schools including Waterloo Primary School, Anchorsholme Primary School and Park School on Whitegate Drive for the special festival held at the Stanley Park Sports Hall. The event forms part of Sport Blackpool’s Early Start programme which aims to increase and promote opportunities for young children to be physically active. All of the schools were specially invited to take part in the event, with each bringing teams of ten pupils. 19 The event included special coaching sessions for the pupils, all aged between 4 and 5 years old, focussing

on skills including dribbling, passing, shooting and goal keeping. The classes were run by Young Leader students from Lytham St Annes Sixth Form and Blackpool and the Fylde Colleges as part of their academic courses. All pupils were presented with a certificate at the end of the Festival. Councillor Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary for Blackpool Council said: “This was an excellent event and a great opportunity for some of the youngest pupils at schools from across Blackpool to learn some great footballing skills at an early age, which will really help to develop their potential. “We’re delighted to be working with local schools in this way and it has also provided invaluable experience for the student coaches from Lytham St Annes Sixth Form College as part of their academic training.”
