Astley Park to host bonfire and fireworks Friday 6th November from 6.30pm onwards - Astley Park

F

AMILIES across Chorley will be able to attend a bonfire and fireworks display in Astley Park this year after Chorley Council announced it was working with one of the town’s major tourist attractions Botany Bay and local employer FI Real Estate Management to organise an event on Friday 6 November to mark the traditional bonfire celebrations. The Astley Park bonfire and fireworks will take place on the park’s playing fields from 6.30pm on Friday 6 November with the bonfire being lit at 7pm and the fireworks display launching at 7.30pm. Entry to the event is free but there will be collection buckets with voluntary donations going to the Mayor of Chorley’s charities, which include HomeStart Central Lancashire, St Catherine’s Hospice and Derian House. Councillor Peter Wilson, who oversees events at Chorley Council, said: “People have been telling us they would like to continue seeing a bonfire event in Astley Park and we’re looking forward to organising it this year with sponsorship and support from Botany Bay and FI Real Estate Management. It should be a great evening with a fantastic fireworks display set to light up the Chorley skies. “The Chorley Carnival Group has organised the event for the last two years but we decided to take over this year and make the event free so that more people could attend. Although there will be charity buckets for voluntary contributions for the Mayor’s charities.

10

“As it’s the first year we’re organising it, we’re planning on keeping it simple and traditional with a bonfire followed by a great fireworks show that will last around 15 minutes.

“There will also be a few food stalls but people are welcome to bring their own food and enjoy the show against the beautiful backdrop of Astley Hall.” Tim Knowles, MD of FI Real Estate Management and Botany Bay, added: “As major employers in the Chorley area, we are proud to be sponsoring and supporting the Astley Park bonfire and fireworks which is a great community event. It should be a great evening out for many local families and we can’t wait to see the spectacular fireworks over Astley Hall and the park.” Anyone attending the bonfire and fireworks event in Astley Park on Friday 6 November is being advised to park in Chorley town centre, where parking will be free after 5pm. The paths from the Park Road and Queens Road entrances to the park will have some lighting to help families find their way to the playing fields. There will be limited parking on Hallgate car park and restrictions will be put in place in across Astley Village. To keep up-to-date with plans for the bonfire and other events organised by Chorley Council, visit chorley.gov.uk/whatson, like Chorley Council on Facebook or follow @ChorleyCouncil

The event saw new and unusual venues take part with many reporting one of the busiest weekends they could remember. People were having to queue to get into some of the venues and for the first time a high street bank took part. Fiona Pilkington, manager at the Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “It was brilliant to be involved in Chorley Live and quite a few people had to do a double-take when they walked past because they couldn’t believe we were opening up late at night and hosting some of the entertainment.

“We have been building the event up over the last couple of years and now it has really started to take off and become a must-see event for people who enjoy live entertainment. “The acts were of a terrific standard and it’s just mind-blowing what we could achieve in future years.” Chorley Live will return on Friday and Saturday 7 and 8 October in 2016.

Market Walk extension given planning approval PLANS to extend the Market Walk shopping centre to bring a cinema and big name retailers to Chorley town centre can now go ahead after planning permission was granted.

T

he £12.9 million extension that will see a multiplex cinema, restaurant and new retailers come to the town was unanimously approved by councillors on Tuesday night.

“We have listened to what people have said about the plans and we have continued to modify them because we need to get this development right for the future of our town,” said Councillor Bradley.

Councillors felt that all the concerns raised as part of the consultation process had been addressed “What it will mean for people is change and I and that it would bring increased footfall and accept there will be some challenges to overcome trade to the town centre. but it is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our town centre and bring it into the Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley 21st century. Council, said: “I’m delighted that planning permission has been granted for the development “I know many people are concerned about and it will now be full steam ahead to get more parking but we are putting in new spaces to businesses signed up to the scheme so we are in mitigate those lost and once complete we will a position to start work on site. have more spaces than are currently available in the town centre.” “Our town centre has continued to flourish, despite the recession, because we have a thriving Chorley Council, which bought Market Walk in market and plenty of independent retailers who 2013, has already signed up cinema operator offer visitors something different and we want to Reel Cinemas to the scheme, with many other complement that. retailers in discussions with the authority.

“However, if we stand still we will get left behind The authority has said it will not begin work on and these plans deliver what people have told us the development until 75 per cent of the units are they would like to see in Chorley.” signed up on pre-lets. The plans have received widespread support with hundreds of comments and suggestions made to the council through the planning application, consultations and Facebook. The seven-unit development would be built on part of the existing Flat Iron car park and create hundreds of new jobs.

The east facing part of the walled garden is home to a community food growing project and includes a small orchard alongside raised beds full of vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. Much of the produce is used by Café Ambio, the onsite café within the Coach House building. Café Ambio is open 7 days a week. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin.
