Shrubs for 

Here are a few suggestions for shrubs which do their thing in spring, and which if you plant them now, should give you a great show this year. So here are a handful of my favourites:

Magnolia stellata The star magnolia is a beautiful shrub with white flowers, which, as its name suggests, are arranged like a star. Not only are the flowers very delicate, but they are also sweetly scented, and open from attractive silky buds. It is relatively slow growing, but will eventually reach a height of 3m and a spread of 4m. It has quite a delicate scent and the narrow, deep green leaves that appear after the flowers are very attractive. It prefers an acid soil, but will live in a neutral one if you plant it in a rich loam and dose it annually with Sequestrene.

Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset'

Chaenomeles japonica The Japanese quince is often wrongly called simply 'Japonica'. It is a deciduous, thorny shrub grown for its bright red or redorange flowers and round, yellow fruits. The leaves are mid-green and oval in shape. It makes a fantastic wall shrub or hedge, but if left alone to be a freestanding shrub (it will reach 1m tall by 2m wide), it does become very untidy.

Both this species and its close relative, Chaenomeles speciosa (Flowering quince), which is slightly larger and bears clusters of bright red flowers from late winter until early spring, prefer well drained soil in a full sun location.

This semi-evergreen upright shrub is a relative of the native Mezeron (Daphne mezereum) that is flowering right now, but instead of pink flowers it has white flowers that are fringed with pink. These appear in clusters and are so sweetly scented that on a still day one plant can make a whole garden smell wonderful. The leaves are lance shaped, pale to mid green and, given a position in full sun, the shrub will reach 1.5m tall by 1.5m wide. 19

"Long gone are the days when the bathroom was simply a functional space. People are moving away from the Victorian-style basic bathroom and towards the modern, spacious spa feel," says Anthony Howells, bathrooms buyer for B&Q. "They want the clean lines, minimalism, wet rooms and walk-in doorless showers, enhanced by chunky floating yet stylish fixtures such as units and frosted glass, which they see when they stay in hotels and want to replicate." "The bathroom is an ideal space to try out new colours in a small area which wouldn't necessarily work in a larger living space. Dove grey is a chic but safe choice for walls and gives a neutral base which can be enlivened by other colour choices. Salmon pink and yellow are one of my favourite combinations as they're elegant but have a warm, summery feel."

Fleetwood Gym Team of the Month -Under 10’ This has been a very busy season. We started the season off with a Social Media Awareness workshop for all managers and officials. This has led to the relaunch of the clubs Facebook page, and focused usage of the clubs website and twitter accounts. This activity is growing the awareness of the clubs good work within the community. The clubs Facebook page in particular has lots of great information and is now followed by over 360 Fans. We have also been focusing on ensuring all of our coaches comply with FA rules on Safeguarding. As part of this drive, we invited the LFA to deliver 2 workshops for our club – Safeguarding Children and Emergency Aid - which were completed during January. All club members also have in date CRB checks. During March, we will have 2 planned events for our parents to get involved in. The first is an ‘Adults In Junior Football’ workshop which will

be conducted by the Lancashire FA Child Welfare Officer – Neil Yates. The second is the Lancashire FA Silent Weekend. Both events are aimed at raising awareness of bad practice by adults and to increase the enjoyment of children within football. We are almost a year old now, and after a slow start our numbers are growing steadily. Our aim is to give support to Parkinson’s Disease sufferers and their carers by providing a friendly , relaxed atmosphere where they can chat about any problems they may have over a cup of tea and a biscuit. Our drop-in centre is open every Wednesday, between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. and you can be sure of a warm welcome. We meet at The Crescent Buildings, at the top of Bold Street, Fleetwood.(next to the North Euston Hotel) so we are very handy for tram,bus and ferry. There is no problem parking if you travel by car. Plenty of research backs up the fact that exercise can do wonders for your health. And with this in mind we are introducing a gentle exercise session at 12.00. each Wednesday. It won’t stop the progression of the disease but as well as helping to keep joints and muscles supple, exercise can enhance your mood and your ability to see life in a more positive light . Eva Clare Shines on Debut

fter the setbacks of last year itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to be able to report that everything is looking a lot more positive for 2014 with plenty of good news. First up was the debut of a 3yo filly Eva Clare who travelled down to Wolverhampton to contest a 5f maiden. She was a bit green leaving the stalls but soon made up the distance showing a smart turn of foot to do so and as they turned for home it became clear she was the only one challenging the red hot favourite for the lead. This however proved a step too far as she had to settle for 2nd place but their was no disgrace in that especially when you consider the winner had been running in Listed company over in Ireland last year. Another positive is that she was clear of the remainder who had all had previous experience and on this show she will definitely improve and could have a bright future in front of her. More good news is that Lokis Strike is well on his way back and is now cantering away, he will be readied up for what hopefully will be a successful Turf campaign from April onwards. New Arrival: Due to the fact we have sold Loki out and the Eva Clare syndicate is almost full we are now looking to bring in a 3rd horse that will be trained

again by Karl Burke. This will probably be done on a Lease based deal and one that will involve a horse that should run regularly and with a bit of luck do its fair share of winning. New Website: Continuing on with the positive news we are proud to unveil our new website which has been done in conjunction with a deal we have struck with top Web design company Bridgewater PR who are based in Warwickshire. Run by Marie Bridgewater who is the niece of the highly talented trainer David Bridgewater, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a deal that will see our website markedly improve and be kept up to date at all times. FY7 Community Beat Hello... It seems ages since I last wrote an article for The Link, in fact it was early December for the January edition and we’re now nearly into March!! Christmas was a relatively normal affair as far as policing goes, no major incidents locally, with the vast majority of people enjoying the festive period as it should be enjoyed, and no significant increases of any particular crimes to report. The drink driving incident I referred to in the last Link edition; the driver is now two months into an 18 month driving ban, has a fine of nearly £500 and is facing the prospect of losing his job with the obvious further implications this will have on him and his family – were those beers really worth it? My team are currently working flat out to deal with a core group of youths that are intent on causing misery to Fleetwood people, and despite interventions from many different agencies; most of them have escalated to committing crime repeatedly. A youth this week has been charged with two pretty nasty racist incidents in the town and will now face the courts again. A third similar incident which occurred in the town centre remains under active investigation with a large number of youths being interviewed before a file will be submitted to CPS for consideration to prosecute. Unfortunately, anti-social behaviour has increased in Fleetwood compared to previous years, you will know as well as I do the hotspot areas and those responsible, I can assure you we are doing everything within our powers to deal with those responsible as firmly as possible.
