Over Wyre, one of the North West’s best kept secrets is home to The Seven Stars - and Rick & Catherine Gilbert’s family. They are the hands behind the pumps of the Seven Stars Hotel in Stalmine and are determined to put it back on the map. Morris Dancing I saw some Morris dancers in Poulton a few days ago. As I had not seen any of these cloggers for a few years, it set me thinking about where this tradition came from. It turns out that the origins of Morris dancing are lost in the mists of time and that rather than being a strictly northern phenomenon, they might have their roots in mediaeval Spain: Morris being a corruption of the Spanish word for Moorish – moresca. It seems that Morris dancers have been plying their trade in the UK for quite some time – since the 15th century according to some sources. And although I got the impression that they were a strictly northern phenomenon, the truth is that there are many different forms of Morris dancing; one of the most distinctive having its home among the honey coloured villages of the Cotswolds.
The tradition is established across wide swathes of the UK, but common features are; accordion music, the garish outfit complete with handkerchiefs, ribbons, waistcoats and knee britches. Sticks adorned with bells and staffs laid on the ground have replaced the swords that were used in the days before health and safety became such an obsession. Along the Welsh border some Morris teams still wear blackface. I have not been to Poulton gala for a few years, as the attractions of winning a goldfish in a polythene bag are not as strong as they were. But I seem to recall Morris dancers being a part of the celebrations, alongside a week of unrelenting rain.

In September we met the Goal-den Girls – a group of 50+ Fylde coast women with some of them from Poulton – as they prepare to run a marathon, Singleton Cloggers as they organised their Weekend of Dance, and Poulton Band as they played at The Grand Theatre in Blackpool! The site covers the work of Poulton Partnership, the community group who organise events like Poulton Gala and the forthcoming Poulton Christmas Festival on 2 December. That’s a growing celebration which gets better every year and is for everyone to enjoy.

HAMBLETON W.I. Barry Band a retired reporter from the Lancashire Evening Post and Blackpool Gazette who had interviewed many of the artistes who headlined shows in Blackpool was our entertainer for the monthly meeting with “Blackpool’s Old Time Comedy Greats”. He described how the Great Comedians, all northerners, came to the many theatres at Blackpool in the 1950’s as an antidote to the austerity war years. For 16 weeks of the “Season” Comics such as Harry Corris, Al Read, Norman Evans, Hilda Baker, Jimmy Clitheroe, Frank Randle, George Formby, Dora Bryan, and of course Ken Dodd entertained packed houses. Our Ken gave over 2,500 performances whilst at Blackpool and never finished on time, you had to be sure to have an alternative method of getting home when you saw Ken’s shows, the stage manager used to throw a set of keys on stage, as if to say “you lock up when you’ve finished”! Hilda Baker became a household name after 34 years on the boards and one T.V. act with a silent male partner whom she called Cynthia with a catch phrase “She knows you know” and had to turn to character acting for a living and was very successful as Nellie Pledge in “Nearest and Dearest” with Jimmy Jewel in a fictitious pickle factory. Hilda was famous for her malapropisms “brandy we only use that for mediaeval purposes” Frank Randle had a ‘blue’ reputation but in fact every word was censored by the Royal Chamberlain’s office in London where clerks would blue pencil out any reference to the Royal Family or swear words. The local police always came on first nights to check that all was in order.
Al Read had been a decorator, a driving instructor, proprietor of a sausage factory when he got the showbiz bug and used overheard conversations and local people’s sayings for his observational comedy act. Barry was thanked by Marjorie Fleming for reminding us of how great these comedians were and entertaining us with his anecdotes. The competition was a Funny postcard and was won by Glennis Dunckerly. Lancashire Federation WI Bowling Finals Sunday 18th September, Hambleton had two teams who got through to the finals, unfortunately we were drawn against each other in the semi-finals so Bernice Heeley and Chris Seed were knocked out at this stage, Patricia Hardy and Patricia Furness went on to the final round but were beaten by the team from Crank. Well done for getting so far. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month at the Poulton Community Centre from 1.30pm to 4pm. We enjoy a varied program at our friendly meetings with speakers, slide shows, musical events, games, quizes, etc. and there are also special interest sub groups which meet throughout each month. Our Annual Subscription is £15, and we pay £1 (which includes tea/coffee and excellent biscuits) each time we attend. If you would like to know more, then contact the Assistant Secretary on 882224.
