Closure of the Coast Guard Station at Rossall Point On Sunday, 11th September, the old coast guard station at Rossall Point, logs off watch for the final time. Work is due to start on the new tower, which is part of Fleetwood’s regenerative programme, Seachange. The volunteers of the National Coastwatch Institute, the occupants of the old tower, will have to vacate the premises, due to health and safety concerns. Work is due to take 20 weeks. Wyre Borough Council did offer Coastwatch temporary premises at the Marine Hall, in Fleetwood. However, they weren’t suitable and it was decided to suspend operations, until the new tower is up and running. Steve Martin, the Coastwatch Station Manager at Rossall Point said, ‘’ I wanted to keep going over the winter, but I decided we couldn’t provide an effective or professional service from the premises offered. As we move into the New Year, we’ll be starting a new training programme, at Fleetwood Nautical College, so if anyone wants to be part of this exciting new chapter at Rossall Point, then contact me through our web site, www.ncirossallpointfleetwood.co.uk.’’

16

The closure comes hot on the heels of the recent Coastwatch success with the Deferred Status Facility (DFS) Assessment. They were tested and passed fit to be integrated into the National Search and Rescue Organisation. This test has to be taken and passed every year to ensure the station conforms to the standard agreed by H.M. Coast Guard, National Coastwatch Institution and all other Search and Rescue partners. John La Gette, Training Manager at Rossall Point said ‘‘It’s very important to achieve the DFS, as this not only gives credibility to our organisation, but recognises the dedication and professionalism of our volunteers. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our friends at Fleetwood Nautical College, who give up their time and expertise every Wednesday, to train our members.’’

Based in its new premises within the Lofthouse Building on London Street, the club has a whole host of new facilities: • Refuel Zone Coffee & Snack Bar – Serving hot and cold drinks with snacks • The Lounge – A place to kick-back, relax and catch some films • The Wooden Spoon Fitness Zone –With it’s International-size boxing ring • The John Cowell Zone – Our meeting room, that doubles up as a quieter activity room for arts and crafts • The Breakout – An area to escape the hustle and bustle of the main club, a place to edit some movie footage, catch up on some coursework or hold a small meeting • Activity Space – Whether it’s playing pool or table tennis, or even a few group games, this is the place to do it • The Kitchen – a fully equipped kitchen area for learning some skills or fuelling the Refuel Zone • Changing Rooms – Fully kitted out separate changing facilities for males and females, complete with showers and disabled access

Fleetwood Club for Young People goes from strength to strength. The Fleetwood Club for Young people Tommy’s goes from strength to strength. Jed Sullivan Club Leader said, “I believe this is the best Youth Club facility in the Fylde area with £300,000 worth of investment in it. The club is open four nights a week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for juniors and we average 40 per session. Mondays and Wednesdays are for seniors and we average 25 per session. In addition we have the boxing section which attends 5 nights a week and on average 15 attend.

Stewart Walker Chair of the Trustees said, “Jed is doing a great job with his team. The Club is a safe, affordable, interesting and exciting place to attend. The benefits of the Club to the local community include keeping the youth of the streets, letting them have an enjoyable time, showing them respect for people and property, and developing their team working skills. I believe the club plays its part in the reduction of anti social behavior in the area. Too often you hear the same cry that “there is nowhere for young people to go and nothing to do. Well Tommy’s proves that is not the case” The Club is looking for additional Trustees who will help guide the club forward over the next two to 5 years. If you are interested or require more information please contact Stewart Walker, Chair of the Trustees on 01253 873165 or 07889 218141

We have introduced a wide range of activities on club nights which have been agreed with our members. We have also had several residential weekends in the Lake District involving a range of outdoor activities. During this summer we have run a “summer scheme” that has included days out to the Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Zoo. Our staff and volunteers are fully trained and very keen to make the club a success. We welcome new members. The cost is 50p per session and £2 a year membership and we hope this makes it accessible to all.”

The kids are back at school, Hallowe’en is soon upon us and Christmas is only around the corner, where has the year gone?! This is a good time to remind you all about the community bonfire event arranged by the Rotary Club on the field opposite Rossall Hospital. This is scheduled for Saturday 5th November, gates open at 6pm, bonfire lighting at 6:45pm with the fireworks at 7:30pm. This has proven to be a fantastic organised display and a great event to go along to with your families. On a more serious note, your Neighbourhood Policing Team strive on to improve on our reductions across all crime categories and detect those offences that are committed. To do this we need your help, please report anything to the Police you think is suspicious, this gives us the best opportunity to respond at that time and prevent what may be the beginning of a crime being committed, thus helping us prevent someone becoming a victim.

We put a lot of time targeting known offenders and bringing them to justice and we do act on information supplied to us. Theft of metal continues to be an area of concern. We have just entered into an Information Sharing Agreement with Foulds Metals of Siding Road. We pass up to date information to them about persons believed to be committing crime or known to be committing crime so those people are prevented from trading with the company. This initiative has worked well in the past to combat shoplifting, known locally as Shopwatch. I would also like to take this opportunity to urge you all to lock your bikes when leaving them unattended, lock them to something secure, eg street furniture and if possible, put them away in your garages and sheds at night.

As Hallowe’en is only around the corner, please ensure your children are supervised if you choose to go trick or treating. It is advisable to call at family and friends homes so not to cause unnecessary distress to the more vulnerable that live amongst us. The message is - have fun but not at the expense of someone else’s misery. Finally, if you have any information or concerns, you can contact us at your PACT meetings, by phone on 01253 876611, via our Lancashire Constabulary website or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. I am also available personally, at the Fleetwood Town Council meeting at The North Euston Hotel, usually the last Tuesday of each month, 25th October at 7pm.

September has seen the Youth Bus visiting Martindale Park near to Chatsworth Avenue each Friday evening between 6pm and 8pm. It has a wide range of activities for them to become involved with, DJ’ing Thankyou equipment, large screen computer PS Dan Whitaker games etc. This is an exciting event

Fleetwood Jokes & Comments Sent In 34

As we SilverSurfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, ‘So, what was wrong? He replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error.’ I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless enquired, ‘An, ID ten T error? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.’ Eric grinned...’Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before ? ‘No,’ I replied. ‘Write it down,’ he said, ‘and I think you’ll figure it out.’ So I wrote down: ID10T DIFFERENT WAYS OF LOOKING AT THINGS Two guys were discussing popular family trends on sex, marriage, and Family values. Bill said, ‘I didn’t sleep with my wife before we got married, did you?’ Larry replied, ‘I’m not sure, what was her maiden name?’ A little boy went up to his father and asked: ‘Dad, where did my Intelligence come from?’ The father replied. ‘Well, son, you must have got it from your mother, cause I still have mine.’ ‘Mr. Clark, I have reviewed this case very carefully,’ the divorce Court Judge said, ‘And I’ve decided to give your wife $775 a week,’ ‘That’s very fair, your honor,’ the husband said. ‘And every now and then I’ll try to send her a few bucks myself.’

While shopping for vacation clothes, my husband and I passed a display of bathing suits. It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband’s advice. ‘What do you think?’ I asked. ‘Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?’ ‘Better get a bikini,’ he replied. ‘You’d never get it all in one.’ He’s still in intensive care. ......................................................................................... The graveside service just barely finished, when there was massive clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in the distance... The little old man looked at the pastor and calmly said, ‘Well, she’s there.’ A few funnies to put a smile on your face! I’m in trouble with the wife. We were in bed naked and she asked what I would like to do most with her body. Apparently “Identify it” wasn’t the right answer. Why men shouldn’t be Agony aunts. Dear Phil, I left home for work last week and after less than a mile my car stalled and wouldn’t start. I walked back to my house and found my husband in bed with our 19 year old babysitter. They announced that the affair had been going on for two years. Can you help me…I’m desperate.

Dear Reader, The most common cause of vehicles breaking down in the first mile is dirt in the fuel lines. Hope this helps. Mike takes pictures of Stars from yesteryear Mike Brayshaw of Rydal Avenue recently came across some long-forgotten photographs in an album which evoked memories of a great day out he’d had at Fleetwood Cricket Club as a youngster. That memorable day in 1957 saw Fleetwood Cricket Club play against an All Stars X1 in a charity match at their local ground. Stars of stage, screen and radio who were appearing in various shows in Blackpool at the time gladly fielded a team to take on the local cricketers and provided a unique chance for townsfolk from the port to see the celebrities up close and personal.

Mike hopes that his pictures, for which the celebrities posed happily enough he says though he was only a young lad with a Box Brownie camera, help bring back to readers pleasant memories of happy days gone by. Pictured Picture 1: Al Read enjoys a cuppa at Fleetwood CC Picture 2: Clockwise from top are Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson, Harry Secombe, Emile Ford and Tommy Steele.

Mike thought that other readers of a certain era might also like a glimpse of the Stars of yesteryear. Appearing amongst the All Stars team were such greats as ‘Goon’ Harry Secombe and of ‘If I ruled the world’ fame. Tommy Steele, star of Half a Sixpence and performer of such songs as ‘Singing the Blues’ and ‘Little White Bull’ also pulled on cricket whites for the celebrity side. Emile Ford, ‘what do you want make those eyes at me for?’ and ‘Slow Boat to China’ (remember singing along to those?) was there as was Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson who were to go on to win the 1959 Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Sing Little Birdie.’ Radio comic Al Read the, ‘How tickled I am’ man also put in an appearance.
