Marine Hall Opportunity
W
yre Council is looking to build on improvements already made to Marine Hall in recent years, and on the 28th November launched a soft market test to determine if there is a commercial partner who can help to maximise the potential of the venue and secure future investment. Expressions of interest from appropriately qualified partners are being sought, which will allow interested parties to outline their views and suggest options for the future development of the venue, with no commitment to or from the council. The Marine Hall was opened in 1935 and has been the premier entertainment venue for Wyre ever since. The venue and surrounding grounds have received significant investment in recent years to rejuvenate the gardens, provide recreational facilities, beach huts and children’s play areas and to restore the theatre’s original stained glass dome. Its seafront location, art deco styling and free parking make it an attractive destination for hirers and visitors and more recently it has grown in popularity as a venue for weddings. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council explained ‘In recent years we have been working hard to make improvements to Marine Hall and our aspiration is for an innovative and economically viable entertainment hub for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors to Fleetwood. We are exploring our options when it comes to the future development of this much loved venue. We are 10
committed to seeking a way forward to maximise this unique asset and further enhance Fleetwood’s offer as a visitor destination. The process is not a formal procurement one at this stage. It is intended to enable the council to consider options for the best way forward. In the meantime we will continue to provide an excellent service to everyone using the venue and have outlined that any expressions of interest should maintain and enhance the existing uses of the venue. Lynee concluded ‘We are committed to Marine Hall as an important venue for events in the town and look forward to progressing this exciting opportunity to attract further investment.’ The closing date for expressions of interest is 12pm on 1 March 2019. very year on the 16th of December, the victory day of Bangladesh is celebrated.
After nearly 9 months of gruesome, blood curdling relentless war, an independent country was finally born in 1971 and Bangladesh successfully embedded it’s name onto the world’s map. 'Bangladeshi Society Blackpool Wyre & Fylde', hosted an event at Spencer Court, Blackpool to commemorate this particular day by playing traditional Bengali folk songs and portraying pictures and videos of the harsh reality of the merciless war. Councillors Mr Danny Scott , Mrs Michele Scott from Warbreck ward and Mr Alistair Humphreys from Squires gate ward were the special guests and their presence glorified the whole event.

W
yre’s bathing waters have been awarded two stars and classified as ‘good’ by the European cleanliness standards for the third year in a row. The bathing water season runs from 5 May to 30 September each year when the Environment Agency tests the water each week for levels of bacteria, taking 20 samples at each site every year. These sites must meet strict European guidelines on water quality, with the aim of protecting the health of people who may want to swim, paddle or even just splash and play there. Councillor Roger Berry, with responsibility for the beaches in Wyre, commented ‘I’m absolutely delighted with this year’s results that recognise how well-managed and maintained Wyre’s bathing waters are. They have been achieved with support from our partners, Environment Agency and United Utilities as well as many residents who take part in community beach cleans along the coastline on a regular basis. Thank you to all those who continue to help look after our beaches.’ The council works closely with other organisations across the North West on a variety of initiatives to improve the quality of beaches and bathing waters, from building new flood defences and sustainable drainage to reducing pollution from sewage systems, agricultural land and surface water outfalls.
Wyre’s good waters Councillor Berry added ‘This really shows that we have both quality beaches and clean water, making Wyre’s coast an attractive and enjoyable place to live and visit. Members of the public can play a big part in improving beaches and bathing waters by thinking about what they flush, not dropping litter, joining in beach cleans through the LOVEmyBEACH campaign and always picking up after their dogs.’ Beach cleans take part one Saturday every month, details of the next beach clean can be found at www.lovemybeach.org.

nce a month members of Fleetwood and Cleveleys Lions Club spend a couple of hours cleaning an area of Fleetwood Beach.
Members of the public come up to them and comment on what an excellent job they are doing. Some give them a funny look as with the members wearing Hi Vis jackets they think they are doing Community Service. he railway line to Fleetwood became one of the world’s first holiday resort railways when it opened in 1840.
For 130 years it carried holiday and Irish Sea ferry passengers into Fleetwood, and the port’s oncemassive fish trade to the junction for the national network at Poulton-le-Fylde. The line carried its last passengers in June 1970, apart from the occasional enthusiasts’ excursion. The Poulton & Wyre Railway Society was formed in 2006 to reopen the section from Poulton to Fleetwood. Network Rail issued a clearance licence to allow Society volunteers access to their section of the line from Poulton to the Cala Gran Caravan Park and Highways England issued one from there to Jameson Road bridge in order to clear vegetation and repair boundary fencing.

Over the past decade PWRS volunteers have removed tons of rubbish and vegetation from the track. Fencing has been repaired, and some of the track sleepers needed replacing. A new footpath across the rail track has been installed for the Wyre Coastal Path to replace a previous very muddy crossing. Thornton and Burn Naze are unrecognisable from the littered, weedstrewn, plant-choked stations of ten years ago. The ultimate achievement would be to have a fully operational heritage railway from Poulton to Fleetwood, with regular trains running from a transport hub in Fleetwood to link with mainline services at Poulton via a new platform. A separate commuter (community) service using good quality refurbished rolling stock could operate daily and support local transport needs. Thornton and Burn Naze stations would be brought back into use and a new Fleetwood South station established at Jameson Road for passengers to and from Farmer Parr’s Animal Park and the Fleetwood caravan parks. The station would also be close to the bus stop on Fleetwood Road. At present all clearance work is carried out by just a few enthusiastic PWRS volunteers at each site. Some members have undertaken grant-funded certified weed control courses at Myerscough College, to operate our industrial standard weed and brush cutters and to be responsible for the chemical treatment of all types or weeds and shrubs to keep the rail track and corridor clear. 44
However, the PWRS is desperate for more volunteer support from anyone who can offer a few hours per week, usually on Wednesday or Saturday mornings at each of the above venues. All relevant training will be given and full health and safety policies are strictly complied with. Our present teams offer a great social atmosphere with refreshment breaks when appropriate. Appropriate working clothing can be supplied and Hi Viz outfits are mandatory when working on the rail corridor. ollowing on from the success of the first ever Blackpool Music Run, the event will be back in 2019, on Father’s Day, Sunday 16th June. Organisers HN Taylor promise the event will be bigger and better than before with lots of new features. There will be a new route and distance for 2019, with the 10K now taking in the North Promenade past Gynn Square. Along with the new 10K route there will also be a 5K which will be open to people of ages 11 and above on the day of the event. All participants will start and finish on the Comedy Carpet where the Festival Headland will host the famous Finishers Festival. Tickets are on sale for both the 5K and 10K event, with early bird tickets priced at £16 and £20 respectively. All tickets purchased include Finishers Festival entry as standard. Over 1000 people were involved in the first event in 2018, with local acts and artists performing all along the promenade. One of the highlights of the event was the finishers festival where tired runners, joggers, walkers and dancers were treated to performances from top acts
Oceans Over Alderaan play unique atmospheric and etheral indie/rock music, with a huge influx of shoegaze, post-rock and gloom-pop - giving them a sound as much in debt to The Cocteau Twins and The Cure as it is to Mogwai and The Joy Formidable. The band was formed around Spring 2007 by formers members of Goonies Never Say Die and Escape Artist, playing thier debut performance supporting The Big Moon at Preston Guild Hall in October that year.
