Optician calls for 100 pairs of unwanted specs to help give sight to the Third World A Blackpool optician is launching a campaign urging residents to donate 100 pairs of unused specs by Christmas to aid people in the Third World whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight. Lisa Barrett of Red Bank Opticians – a Kodak Lens Vision Centre in Red Bank Road, Bispham, has already collected 100 pairs of specs but is keen to double that number by the end of 2010.
All glasses and donations should be dropped off at reception of the Vision “It has taken almost two years to collect the first hun- Centre, 113 Red Bank Road, Bispham, dred, but I'm really hopeful that people will see what Blackpool, FY2 9HZ a worthy cause this is and donate their unused and or call 01253 350 048 for more information. old specs. With a lot of effort and community support, we will have our second hundred by Christmas, and people who are suffering unnecessarily in developing countries could soon have their sight improved,” said Lisa. The Second Sight Project is part of a national scheme run in partnership with Vision Aid Overseas, which asks for specs to be dropped off at the Vision Centre along with a £1 donation. By marrying the donation and spectacles, the Kodak Lens Second Sight Project ensures that the specs reach the Third World where Vision Aid Overseas volunteer opticians are working, dispensing spectacles to those who need them the most. Dr Natalie Briggs, Chief Executive of Vision Aid Overseas, commented: “Vision Aid Overseas is transforming the lives of thousands of patients each year, but there are still many more to reach. By supporting the Kodak Lens Second Sight Project people have the opportunity to help the world to see.” Lisa is running the Kodak Lens Second Sight Project campaign to mark the second year of business for the practice. To mark the anniversary on September 29th the practice will also be offering patients free eye examinations throughout October.
