bring on the
bling
G
old, silver, glitter and glitz are essentials in today's successful rooms, and even if you haven't got a big bank balance, there are some metallic touches that could bring instant glamour to the home.
The interiors world has taken gold, gloss, crystals and bling to its heart. Following in the footsteps of fashion, this trend is also a reaction to our tough economic times. Staying in to avoid expensive bars, interiors lovers want their living spaces to feel luxurious and atmospheric and are going for bejewelled and metallic wallpapers, lustrous fabrics, gilded furniture, and catch-the-light accessories.

rooms to follow the 'less is more' rule, so that the end result is decadent and dramatic rather than bold and brassy. "You can opt for a futuristic approach with silver and steel and minimal furnishings, or echo the Seventies with zingy colours like oranges and greens in metallic finishes and retro white furniture," says Linda. "Alternatively, there's the opulent route which embraces vintage and uses gold and gilt teamed with tactile, touch -me fabrics such as velvet and silks." So rustle through the glad-rags in your wardrobe for inspiration and join the glitterati gang.
Midas touch We've all got our favourite fashion style and you probably won't go far wrong if you replicate the essence of that in your rooms.
Star buys: Graham & Brown's wallpaper selection includes a richly patterned A touch of bling is the way Desire, available in gold, from its Spirit collection, to make our homes shine and designer, "Metallics are undoubtedly big news as they add instant Barbara Hulanicki's richness. Even a single wall papered in a striking design silvery Diva. can have incredible impact and improve the feel-good Both are factor in an otherwise dull room." £30 a roll. And not for nothing is this look dubbed 'metallic magic' because the reflective properties of metallic papers and paints work in a similar way to mirrors by making small spaces seem larger, and helping the room, burst into life under artificial light. Top tip: Designer Linda Barker applauds the trend. Remember Dark green can be used to dramatic effect in a "A touch of bling is the way to make our homes large patterns candlelit dining room or other areas used mostly shine - literally – and currently it seems that can overpower the evening. In a bathroom, it can give a feeling of everyone's seeking a bit of good old-fashioned smallinspaces razzle-dazzle and glitz," she says. enthusiasm and brightness to preparations at the She advises those who want glitteringly successful start of a day.

property Jewels in the crown
rise and shine
All that glitters needn't be gold with the glorious array of paint, faux finishes and clever costume jewellery available for walls. Painting walls or furniture, in metallic paint cheaply transform both spaces and pieces, says Charlotte Boyd, style editor of House Beautiful magazine. "Try giving an old dark wood console table a metallic update to really add wow factor to a hallway." Be imaginative and rummage in your jewellery box and display a cluster of pretty silver or gold costume pieces on table tops, hang strands of necklaces on walls or make a feature of them in velvet-lined picture frames.
On your metal Small is beautiful, as the saying goes, but one of the best ways to indulge in this look is to be bold with statement, opulent pieces.
For luxury looks, dress windows in beautiful fabrics - silks, velvets and taffetas in metallic shades which will hint at Hollywood-style glamour.
Victoria Wright, style advisor at HomeSense says: After the over-zealous ghetto bling of the Nineties, it's understandable that home owners are slightly nervous of going overboard for glitz and glitter in their homes.
"We've been inspired by catwalk fashion for our new metallic Silks collection, and feature the fabric in sophisticated silvers, pewter and platinum," says Jo Cassabois, founder of Pret A Vivre, bespoke curtain and blind experts.
"But stand-alone individual items will have impact. Don't limit yourself on shades, think copper, bronze, muted gold and champagne and mix contemporary with vintage for an up-todate take." Star buys: Get your own gold throne, a high backed Cocoon chair in gold, £4,580 from Christopher Guy, while a silver Madame Butterfly Tall Cabinet, £795, from The French Bedroom Company is elegant and unusual. Turn on to full fat bling with a decorative gold bed and two matching bedside cabinets from Newtons Furniture. A Chateau D'or set is £1,099. Satisfy a gold passion with De Ferranti's Alchemy collection of metallic wall and floor tiles. Its gold briquettes are around £250 a square metre.
Silver, pewter and platinum colourways can be teamed with aubergine or maroon for warmth or work well with on-trend sorbet shades such as pistachio greens, duck-egg blues, pinks and yellows.
Getting precious Get in on the metallic-act with gold and silver accessories which will give rooms an instant injection of glamour. "It's easy to overdo metallics," warns Charlotte Boyd at House Beautiful magazine. "Add a few gold or silver sequinned cushions to a sofa or bed, or perhaps group a collection of vases in different shades in front of a gold mirror to make a feature." Star buys: It might tarnish the bank balance but you could splurge on a gold Kartell Bourgie Crystal table lamp, £488 from Occa -Home or simply pick up a silver snip at Dunelm Mill. Its crackle glass lamp is £15.

I'm getting married this summer and I have a prominent tattoo I want to hide on the big day. Solution: You can still play the blushing bride and disguise your inner rebel. The consistency of concealer won't be thick enough for shortterm tattoo cover-up so try The Sher System Perfect Cover Camouflage make-up range. The Undercover Cream, from ÂŁ18 (www.sher.co.uk) is proving popular with tat fans who want the flexibility of concealing their ink designs for work or special occasions. The range also helps hide acne scars, age spots, varicose veins and dark circles.

the salad days of summer Learning how to make a terrific salad is a skill. Become a salad pro with our easy-to-follow tips and recipes. As soon as summer looms, those party invitations start plopping through the door. Suddenly you're expected to look bronzed, healthy and slim while holding a glass of fizz and not dropping your canapes. This is where the gift of salad comes in. In order to stay trim, many party-goers will live off iceberg lettuce, tomato and a Sauvignon blanc from May until September. But if this combination leaves you feeling faint, remember there's more than one way to toss a salad. Here are five basic salad recipes to get you started...
Garden Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 250g cherry tomatoes 250g baby leaf mix, such as mizuna, baby chard, lollo rosso, purslane and oak-leaf lettuce
1 avocado 50g pitted black olives For the dressing: 1tsp Dijon mustard 2tbsp cider vinegar 3tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper
1
Serves 4
Peel and slice the cucumber and halve the tomatoes. Mix the salad leaves with the cucumber and tomatoes in a large salad bowl. Stone and peel the avocado, cut into cubes and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking together the mustard, vinegar and oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad, toss carefully to combine and serve.
Greek Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 4 plum tomatoes 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1/2 red onion 60g pitted olives 50g feta cheese, diced For the dressing: 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp chopped parsley Salt and pepper
Cut the cucumber and tomatoes into 1-2cm chunks and put them in a large salad bowl. Cut the pepper flesh into thin strips and put them in the bowl with the cucumbers and tomatoes. Finely slice the red onion and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking the oil and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss carefully. Transfer to serving bowls, scatter some feta evenly over each bowl and serve.

chop Salad For the salad: 1 iceberg lettuce 410g red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 avocado, peeled, stoned and diced 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1tbsp chopped coriander leaves 1 jalapeno chilli (optional), finely sliced Corn chips, to garnish Sour cream (optional), to serve
3
For the dressing: Juice of 1 1/2 limes 3tbsp olive oil Cut the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and put them into a large salad bowl. Add the beans, avocado, tomatoes and onion with the coriander and chilli (if used). Mix all the ingredients together. Make the dressing by whisking together the lime juice and oil. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and mix lightly to combine. Garnish with lightly-crushed corn chips and serve with sour cream.
Potato Salad 1kg new potatoes 125g smoked streaky bacon 1tsp vegetable oil 6 spring onions 175ml mayonnaise Salt and pepper
Halve the potatoes and cook in lightly-salted boiling water until tender. Rinse under cold water and leave to cool. Meanwhile, slice the bacon into thin strips. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the bacon until golden, drain on kitchen paper and allow to cool. Finely slice the spring onions, reserving some for garnish. Put the potatoes, finelysliced spring onions and bacon in a large salad bowl. Gently stir in the mayonnaise. Season to taste with salt and pepper, garnish with the reserved spring onions and serve.
Chickpea and Herb Salad 100g bulgur wheat 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp lemon juice 2tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley 1tbsp chopped mint 400g chickpeas, drained and rinsed 125g cherry tomatoes, halved 1tbsp chopped mild onion 100g cucumber 150g feta cheese Salt and pepper
Put the bulgur wheat in a heatproof bowl and pour boiling water over, just enough to cover. Set aside until the water has been absorbed. If you want a fluffier finish, transfer it to a steamer and steam for five minutes. Spread on a plate to cool. Mix together the olive oil, lemon juice, parsley and mint in a large salad bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the chickpeas, tomatoes, onion and bulgur wheat. Dice the cucumber and add to the bowl. Mix well and add the diced feta, stirring lightly to avoid breaking up the cheese. Serve immediately.

The SX4 is a cross between a small hatchback and a mini SUV. The raised driving position, lofty stance and spacious cabin all make the car quite unique.
I
f you want to get ahead in the car business, small is the biggest game in town. Superminis, compact hatchbacks, call them what you want, the small car sector is the one to be in.
The trade off is that there's little in the way of genuine variety. Sure, style-wise there's much to differentiate one supermini from the next, but at the end of the day you're still driving a supermini. And if you want a small car with a bit of attitude or go anywhere ability it's a case of getting something, well, bigger. Which is why cars like Suzuki's SX4 have managed to carve out a successful niche for themselves.

Presenting a noticeably more rugged face to the world while managing to retain the same footprint as a conventional supermini, the SX4s of this world offer some-thing a little different. Different yes - but also different in a good way. Choice is always welcome in the car business, but cars such as the SX4 must deliver what the marketing-speak promises. Suzuki has form in the small car market so this isn't an issue. From city cars to compact 4x4s, the Japanese firm has made a good living from this end of the business.

MOTORING The SX4 is, if you like, a cross between a small hatchback and a mini SUV. All the tell-tale clues are present: the high roofline, raised driving position, chunky styling and all -wheel drive. This latter feature might only present on one variant, but for anyone with a need for such it sure beats having to manhandle something larger on country lanes. First let's consider the front-wheel drive SX4; it's more than just a 'softroader' for the city. The raised driving position, lofty stance and spacious cabin all make perfect sense in the city where visibility is often at a premium and getting down into and up out of a regular car can be a chore - and a genuine pain for some. With the ease of use box ticked, next consider the car's performance. There's a straight-forward choice between a thoroughly revised 120 horsepower 1.6-petrol unit and a 90 horsepower 1.6-litre diesel. If you plan on racking up the miles, the diesel probably the better option.
the SX4s of this world offer something a little different

supermini sector but the more you examine it, the more it makes sense. You don't need to live at the top of a mountain to make the most of it, while it feels just at home on the motorway as it does bounding along muddy country paths. By way of a deal-breaker, for 2010 Suzuki has spruced up the car's interior, improved equipment levels and polished the car's exterior by way of more colour-coded trim. For the asking price, this is a small car the genuinely punches above its weight.

Facts at a glance:
For more urban-centric motoring the petrol unit is an excellent all-rounder. Improved performance, economy and refinement have made it a more rounded proposition now, and it's also the engine used in the allwheel drive SX4. Now, this might appear like overkill, but there's a lot to be said for all-weather ability. You don't have to be stuck in snow to reap the benefit, as even wet, leaf-strewn roads have the potential to cause a problem. Also, if you happen to live or travel in rural areas, something small and economical like the SX4 can make more sense than a bulky, traditional 4x4 - why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut, after all. And the SX4 - in all-wheel drive SZ5 trim - is so easy to live with. A simple rocker switch activates the 4x4 mode, giving you the option of on-demand all-wheel drive when you lose traction, full 4x4 lock and a front-drive mode. A genuinely versatile, practical and easy to drive car, Suzuki's SX4 might appear to be a left-field choice in the

The BJFF Club House is on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road and has a fully-stocked snack bar which will be open serving hot and cold food and drinks.
Training will continue throughout the Summer months and all newcomers will be given a warm welcome. If you are interested in coming along, with your son or daughter, you can simply turn up at the Club House on Sunday morning, or pre-book with our Football For ALL Lead Coordinator, Andi Whitworth (FA Level 2 coach) on 07791 137682 (or e-mail andiwhitworth@hotmail.co.uk). The first session is FREE, and then £3 thereafter. New Players Required - GIRLS Under 11's (School Years 5 and 6), GIRLS Under 14's (School Years 8 and 9) and Boys Under 10's (School Year 5).....At BJFF we currently have two dedicated GIRLS only teams, training and playing matches in the North Valley Youth League. We currently have teams representing BJFF at Under 12's (School Year 7) and Under 14's (School Years 8 and 9). We are on the lookout for players at both age groups, and we are also currently recruiting players to start a NEW GIRLS TEAM at the Under 10's / 11's age group (current School Years 4, 5 and 6). If you are interested in joining this new team, training will initially be with the Under 12's Girls, separating as the Squad becomes big enough to sustain itself. Please contact Simon Walford (Mobile - (07920) 865497, or E-Mail - siwalford1965@googlemail.com) for more details. We have also created a NEW BOYS TEAM for next season, which will take part in the Blackpool & District League, playing 11-A-Side football. Our new starters had their first training session on Thursday 27th May, and with 12 players attending the first session, and a few others showing interest, we will be assessing all new-comers over their next 4 - 6 weeks. Under the management of Dave Pyatt and Lee Knight, we are planning on purchasing a new kit for the squad, with training jackets to follow (*if any sponsors are interested, please get in touch*). We are still looking for players who are currently Under 10's (current School Year 5) - if you are currently in School Year 5 and are interested in joining this new team from the start, please contact Andy Griffiths ASAP on 07884 476954 (e-mail agriffit@csc.com). Club House & Facilities News.....We have now completed the works on the land behind our Club House, with the aim of creating two new mini soccer pitches. Locals will notice that Herras fencing is protecting this land, as the land has been seeded and now needstime for the seeds to germinate and grow. A spell of 3 weeks without anyrain is not helping our cause, so we will be praying for some well-timed overnight rain in the next few weeks. We are also continually being faced with putting the fences back upright, as local youths seem to find it amusing to use the fence panels to play football and use as trampolines. If you see any youths mis-behaving near this
area please report this directly to the Police.
Work on the car park is also in progress with our contractor CALMAC part-way through the preparation process, laying drains, and clearing the land in preparation for the concrete to be poured (works due to be completed by Friday 11th June). Plea for Materials / Labour..... If any businesses can provide materials, for any of the jobs mentioned above, or for pitch renovations, paint, timber etc etc, please get in touch with our Chairman. Fund-Raising and Social Events.....The Fund-Raising and Social Team held an extremely successful Race Night at Uncle Toms Cabin during May raising £850 plus for Club Funds. Our Family Fun Day has been put back until July / August with the original date clashing with Blackpool descending on Wembley for the Play-Off Final. A few days before the Final, we were delighted to welcome Blackpool's number 1, Matt Gilks, to The Red Lion pub, where 150 screaming BJFF children (and their parents - particularly the mother's!!) gave Matt a rapturous welcome. After signing auto-graphs for almost 2 hours, our children completed their task of decorating the Red Lion in readiness for the World Cup, donating shirts and other football gear, and placing them on the walls throughout the pub. Our fund-raising team, in conjunction with our partners from The Red Lion are running a World Cup Draw from now until the World Cup Final, with 2 STAR PRIZES - as well as 2nights away on B&B basis at ANY Premier Inn throughout the UK, we have secured an authentic framed signed Jackie Charlton World Cup Winners shirt. Tickets are on sale from BJFF and The Red Lion between now and World Cup Finals night. Priced £1, all proceeds will go towards the provision of kit and equipment for all of our children. If you would like to take some tickets to sell, please contact Andy Griffiths ASAP on 07884 476954 (or e-mail - agriffit@csc.com). On The Playing Field.....Congratulations to our Under 13's Blues team, managed by Mike Hargreaves, who finished the season in outstanding form, and brought home some silverwear by winning the Hogan Plate Final in a thrilling 3-1 win against rivals Foxhall. Our Under 11's fought gallantly against higher league opposition, but settled for the Plate Runners-Up trophy on the same day. All squads have now completed their league season, with some earning a well deserved break, whilst our younger players enjoy the summer tournament season, and in some cases (Under 9's to Prestatyn, and Under 7's to Pwlhelli) enjoy a weekend away. Our end of season presentation days are to be held on Sunday 13th June (Under 10's and above) and Sunday 20th June (Under 9's and below). Both to be held at The Cliffs Hotel from 12:30, with guest presenters. Summary.....Our website is regularly updated with up-to-date information and contact details - see >> http:// www.clubwebsite.co.uk/bjff . If you would like to bring your child down to BJFF, or would like to get involved in coaching / fundraising / voluntary work of any kind, or you are a business who could support us with our numerous sponsorship and advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact our Chairman, Andy Griffiths on 07884 476954 (e-mail - agriffit@csc.com).
