Blackpool to Fleetwood Tramway Upgrade It is proposed to invest over £100m on totally upgrading the tramway, bringing the service straight into the 21st Century. Key features will include : 16 new 32m Bombardier trams featuring low floors, accessible for all users including passengers with disabilities. New Tram stops featuring level access compliant with Disability Discrimination Act. Replacing 8km of track. Installing 14 priority signals at highway junctions to improve journey times. New Tram Depot at Starr Gate. Faster Journey Times. Trams have been operating in Blackpool since 1885 and through to Cleveleys and Fleetwood since 1898. The trams carry millions of passengers every year and form a key local tourist attraction. The Tramway, which is owned by Blackpool Council runs from the town along the Fylde Coast into Lancashire, serving Cleveleys and Fleetwood. The line is a key transport asset to Coast and it is essential that the tramway is upgraded to ensure the service continues to operate for future generations.

the Fylde

To maximise its potential it is proposed to provide the latest "State of the Art" trams and to dramatically accelerate the quality of service. This will include new easy access tram stops and to provide significantly quicker journey times making the service far more attractive for local travel along the Fylde Coast. Key objectives of the project are to provide a modern light rail tramway which is accessible to all. Passengers will no longer have to clamber aboard there will be level boarding at new tram stops along the full length of the tramway from Starr Gate to Fleetwood. This investment £68.3m from the Department for Transport; £17.7m from Blackpool Council; £15.2m from Lancashire County Council and £0.4m from INTERREG North West Europe Programme will build on the current regeneration of the town whilst improving access to the Fylde Coast. Key aims -To provide a high quality transport facility along the Fylde Coast fit for the 21st century. -To provide quicker journey times for passengers. -To provide level boarding for all passengers greatly assisting people travelling with pushchairs; heavy shopping as well as assisting the less mobile. -To encourage use of public transport. -To assist regeneration along the Fylde Coast.

The £100 million pound upgrade of the Blackpool to Fleetwood Tramway is a key economic regenerator for the whole of the Fylde Coast and will deliver significant benefits to both Cleveleys and Fleetwood. A brand new fleet of state of the art trams combined with a major track and infrastructure upgrade will transform the current tramway system into a modern, efficient and speedy Light Rapid Transport System fit for the 21st Century and beyond. Major construction works will begin in earnest in January 2010 centred on Lord Street, Fleetwood and while there will clearly be some disruption, Lord Street will still be very much 'open for business'. Acknowledging the rich history of the tramway and recognising its importance; a small fleet of heritage trams will be retained and used for special events and summer services to complement the new services which will commence in Easter 2012. Mike Sanderson Chairman of Fleetwood Chamber of Trade & Commerce FCTC said " I would like to thank Andy Whitlam of Lancashire CC for giving Fleetwood Chamber of Trade & Commerce the opportunity to be involved at an early stage of the project. We have been assured that all business's directly affected by the work will be visited by the contractors in order to ascertain their individual needs for deliveries etc during the road closures". Ten Things to Look Forward to in 2010 Now that 2009 has proved not to be as bad as everyone thought it was going to be, there’s every possibility that 2010 will have a decidedly sunny outlook. Here are ten things to get you rubbing your hands in anticipation.

Going to the country No more false starts, no more speculation, we are guaranteed a general election in 2010. Who knows what the outcome will be? Let’s just hope the returning officers don’t decide to have a work to rule and spoil the election night party.

Is it all up for JK? Harry Potter fans can look forward to the release of the film of the final book in November. Don’t despair though; it isn’t the end of the line. The book has been split into two films and this is the first one. Trust Warner Bros to milk the franchise for everything it’s worth.

Jedward are not dead Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the TV again you find that the pop group known as John and Edward have not vanished into obscurity. Expect albums, videos and their own TV show. Arghh!

Murray in a hurry Grumpy tennis star Andy Murray just gets better and better. Could we see a Brit in the Wimbledon final this year? Watch this space.

1966 all over again, part 1 Yes, it’s FIFA World Cup time once again and England are in it to win it. Okay, maybe we did lose to Brazil, the best team in the world, during a friendly in November but that’s the great thing about football; any team can win any game. Let’s see what happens.

An all new Jag Jaguar’s all new XJ goes on sale in 2010 and should be staggeringly good. As with the XF it has the look of a car designed in 2050 rather than 1950. Better still; with the improving economy a few people might be able to afford one.

Matt Smith who? 2009 was a damp squib for Doctor Who fans with only a paltry 4 “special” episodes to watch. This year we get a full series and a new Doctor Who to boot; the youthful Matt Smith. Will he be able to fill David Tennant’s boots? Time will tell.

Things can only get better Will our economy start growing again or will we be the only country in the world still in recession this year? All the stats point to the former. Let’s hear it for the optimists.

Fun in the sun You heard it here first; there will be unbroken sunshine, no rain and temperatures in the high 30s this summer…in Spain, Greece and Portugal anyway. And with the upturn we’ll all be able to afford to go on holiday abroad again – hooray!

1966 all over again part 2 The plucky Brits will once again be facing up to the deadly Hun this year as dream team McLaren with two British drivers, who also happen to be back to be back world champions, face up to German Uberteam Mercedes GP. For once we have a secret weapon in our favour; we’ve got the same engines!

GETTING RID OF POST-CHRISTMAS WEIGHT GAIN by health and fitness expert, Pam Tribick. Dieting is psychologically linked to ‘denial’. Depriving yourself of food you love means you’re more likely to come off your diet and binge. Setting an unrealistic, self-punishing weight loss goal will set you up for failure and make you miserable. Rather than yo-yo/fad/crash dieting, a much healthier option is to develop balanced, nutritious eating habits. Making small, positive changes to your eating habits which you can live with is the key to effective long term fat loss. You could start by cutting out unnecessary fat, i.e. butter/spreads. There are loads of low fat alternatives or you could use pickle or chutney but watch the sugar and salt content. If you really need that creamy taste, low-fat mayonnaise, while still containing fat, has less than butter so you are still saving calories. However, the key to quicker weight loss is to combine healthy eating habits with exercise which will burn far more calories than just cutting down on food. If you think you don’t have time to exercise, try decreasing your sedentary recreation time, e.g. watching TV, playing computer games or surfing the internet. We all waste some time each day so use yours to increase physical activity and doing exercise you enjoy will make you want to do it more. Exercise promotes energy so as well as burning calories you can look forward to having more energy in everyday life. So if you've put on a few extra pounds over Christmas and want to lose them, you don’t need to become obsessed with dieting. It's all about moderation and gradual lifestyle changes. Bispham, Junior FOOTBALL Federation BJFF

Football For ALL Initiative.......... During December, we at BJFF have continued our Sunday morning Football For ALL initiative with sessions running from 10:30am - Midday INSIDE during the winter months at our Club House on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road. In 7 weeks of Football For ALL we have welcomed over 20 children aged 4 - 10, and their parents, and they have enjoyed themselves in a fun and friendly environment. At the end of each session, the children really enjoy taking penalties in a mini competition, and so far we have had 7 different penalty competition winners........ Our sessions re-commence in the New Year, on Sunday 3rd January. If you are interested in coming along, with your son or daughter, you can simply turn up at the Club House on Sunday morning, or prebook with our Football For ALL Lead Coordinator, Andi Whitworth (FA Level 2 coach) on 07791 137682 (or e-mail - andiwhitworth@hotmail.co.uk). The first session is FREE, and then ÂŁ3 thereafter. Club House News..... The Club House has suffered some damage recently from local youths climbing on the roof and "tagging" the exterior walls with graffiti. In order to prevent a repeat, the Executive Committee have sanctioned the purchase of perimeter fencing to protect our Club House from vandalism, and allow us to carry out further works safe in the knowledge that they will be protected (or at least it will be harder for vandals to get in and out). The Project commenced in December, and will be finished by the end of January. Early in the New Year, we will also be looking to repair the roof, erect new guttering, courtesy of our main Club Sponsor, 21st Century Windows (with thanks to John McVey) and Dale Reeves, and then progress to some internal changing room renovations. We also have a number of other challenges - more about those in a future issue.

Social Events..... The Childrens Christmas Party was a roaring success, with 75 - 80 children enjoying themselves, and getting a present off Father Christmas. The Adults also enjoyed a Christmas Party at Poulton Golf Club, which was attended by110 plus parents, coaches, managers etc, who danced the night away to the sounds of local Rock band Hotwyre, who were excellent. If anyone wants a young band for a function get in touch.......!! A staggering 400 plus players, parents, coaches etc enjoyed a day out at Blackpool Tower, including a trip to the Circus for the Mooky Doolittle Christmas Pantomime, whilst a number of the Squads had their own Christmas Days out with trips to the Sandcastle, Ice Skating, Mad Hatters etc proving especially popular. Watch out for announcements of social and fundraising events in the New Year, On The Playing Field..... With the weather taking a firm grip during December, there were a number of matches called off, but some highlights from the month included the Under 8's being invited into Blackburn Rovers to play against the Blackburn Academy boys. Our boys had an excellent day out, and gave a good account of themselves, Matty Griffiths and Sam Kellett being the pick of the players on the day. There were hat-tricks during the month for Josh Dudley (Under 8's), Lewis Cooper (Under 13's Blues) and Alex Ryder (Under 14's) who scored 3 of the 10 goals scored in the biggest victory of the month, enjoyed by our Under 14's squad against AFC Blackpool. Summary..... Our website is regularly updated with up-to-date information and contact details - see >> http:// www.clubwebsite.co.uk/bjff . If you would like to bring your child down to BJFF, or would like to get involved in coaching / fundraising / voluntary work of any kind, or you are a business who could support us with our numerous sponsorship and advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact our Chairman,

Plea for Materials / Labour..... If any businesses can provide materials, for any of the jobs mentioned above, or for pitch renovations, car park flattening, paint, timber etc etc, please get in touch with our Chairman, Andy Griffiths, on 07884 476954 (e-mail - agriffit@csc.com). Similarly, if any Andy Griffiths on 07884 476954 businesses, or local tradesmen, have some spare (e-mail - agriffit@csc.com). time, and would like to do something worthwhile for the children of Bispham, our local community, by volunteering their expertise, if you could contact Andy with how you can help, it would be very much appreciated.

Christmas Recycling Tips Courtesy of Blackpool Council

Cards Try sending e-cards this year. E-cards mean no paper at all but the sentiments are still there.

Food and drink

Keep the Christmas cards you receive this year and re-use them next year as gift tags or to make in to cards again.

Buy your fruit and veg naked (without packaging!) and then you can pick the best ones too!

Save money and the environment – why not donate the money you normally spend on cards to a charity?

When shopping for your Christmas feast, use a re-usable shopping bag or re-use old plastic bags.

Or make sure you buy cards made from 100 per cent recycled materials.

Bigger is better! Buy drinks in bigger bottles rather than small ones. One large bottle generates less waste than several smaller ones. If you don’t have a doorstep recycling service, remember to drop when you shop! Take your drinks bottles to the bottle bank for recycling when you next go to the supermarket. Don’t forget to put the vegetable peelings from your Christmas dinner in your home compost bin. Gifts Look out for presents made from recycled materials or those that have recycled content. Go for gift bags or boxes instead of wrapping paper. A funky gift bag or box can then be reused for another occasion. Stick to tradition and put presents inside a Christmas stocking that can be reused next year.

Remember to recycle your Christmas cards and donate them to a Christmas card recycling scheme you can find collection bins in many of the high street retailers. General Start your own compost heap - it’s a great place to put all your vegetable peelings from Christmas dinner, plus all those extra newspapers and cardboard. To make way for the season’s latest trends and party dresses, you may need to clear out old outfits that haven’t been worn for a while visit your nearest textile recycling bank, or pay a visit to a charity or second-hand shop. Supermarket recycling facilities are a great place to get rid of old boots and shoes. Recycle real Christmas trees. These can either be broken up and put in your green waste wheelie bin or you may take them to Bristol Ave HWRC or if can, compost them.

Buy wrapping paper made from 100 per cent recycled materials.

Take old toys that have been replaced with new ones to a local children’s centre or charity shop where they can find a good home.

Buy rechargeable batteries for all the children’s news toys and electrical gadgets - for every 500 charges you’ll save 499 batteries being thrown away

Make a new year’s resolution to recycle more stuff, more often!
