bare facts for rooms Natural materials are all the rage with wood, stone and organic fabrics featuring in homes that embrace eco principles. Check out the ingredients for naturally stylish homes.
T
his refreshing home trend is all about simple and unadorned settings. By contrast, it celebrates the beauty and neutral tones of materials such as unvarnished wood, stone and hand-cast ceramics, and complements them with 'touch me' texture fabrics such as bleached linens, pure cottons and slubby wools. The key to pulling off the uncluttered and under-stated neutrals and naturals fusion is to create a palette mimicking 'cosmetic' shades. Think in terms of 'highlighting' rooms with foundation and blusher shades muddy pinks, browns and taupes for furniture and floors, and a 'base' of ivory or pearly cream on walls.

Use personal touches such as rich, wool throws and cushions trimmed with sequins or lace. Alternatively, make a sharp contrast with splashes of colour in accessories like vases.
Meridian Range from Kitchens Direct
Back to basics Wood and stone are enduring choices for interiors – particularly kitchens and bathrooms - as they're hard-wearing, especially with the advancement of sophisticated, protective finishes which don't mask their good looks. "Designers are marrying nature with inspirational sculptural design in stone," says Cheryl Gurner at Bathrooms International.
So stripping-off this summer couldn't be easier - just dress rooms in flattering, spaceenhancing shades teamed with nature's best materials and wait for the compliments!

"Sinks and baths are being crafted from a single boulder of stone, leaving the exterior sides in a natural raw state, while the interior surfaces are polished and glossy. We're also seeing bamboo - one of the planets most sustainable materials featuring in furniture."

Laura Ashley's chic rustic-style Milton range is a winner and the furniture's oak finish is easily enhanced by occasional oiling. Extending dining table, £800.
Wooden-it-be-lovely
"Awareness of how and where things are made is integral to this trend. Handmade things have an authenticity which is ultra fashionable currently," says Anita Kohn at interiors specialists, Living In Space.
Wooden furniture adds real impact and character in a neutral room. Showcase the material a piece is made from, and appreciate its connection to nature demonstrated by raw, unfinished surfaces and the blemishes that can only enhance its character.
"There's a growing demand for pieces that aren't bland and boast unique knots and grain. People want pieces that will grow old disgracefully because wear and tear - like laughter lines - adds to both patina and visual charm."
"Wool, hemp, jute, linen and even horsehair are some of the natural materials that featured in the Summer collections of the major fabric houses." Natural beauties: A new modular seating system called The Terrace Loft is made from carved, reclaimed teak and upholstered with generous, squashy cushions. Prices start from £4,795 from Raft, a company offering ecofriendly traditionally crafted furniture.

texture Hard surfaces and raw materials, no matter what their beauty, need to be balanced by the softness and contrast of textured fabrics.
Complement the look with wooden utensils. Designer, John Rocha's wooden platter, £15, and serve bowl, £22, from Debenhams.

SAVINGS STRUGGLE FOR GENERATION NEARING RETIREMENT
T
he generation nearing retirement has struggled to put much aside in a savings pot despite being financially one of the luckiest ever. It enjoyed house price booms from 1970, almost-free university education and (for many) secure final salary pensions.
Aviva's Real Retirement report claimed that one in five Britons aged over 55 expects to work until their 70th birthday – and some possibly even longer. Although the average home owned by people in this group is worth £236,600, the average home loan outstanding is £11,430. Nearly 20% of them still have a mortgage, and a quarter hold less than £2,000 in savings. Aviva says many over-55s will need an easier 'parttirement' job to keep afloat financially through their 60s. More than half those it surveyed expect to retire eventually between 71 and 74.

Now the 'lucky' generation has another headache - the coalition Government is looking at proposals to more than double Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on sales of shares, buy-to-let property and other non-business assets - hitting savers more heavily than anyone else. A survey by 1st Exchange, a financial services technology specialist, says 60% of financial advisers (IFAs) are planning to move clients' money away from assets attracting CGT. But where to, exactly?
If pensions, shares and cash in the bank are leaving the 50-plus generation hard up, what other assets can secure a comfortable old age?...

finance The obvious haven in stormy economic times is gold, where the spot price on London markets has soared in the past year from £593 per ounce to £828 - breaking all previous records.
in gold, mining and precious metal-related shares and has for some years been the most popular choice for small investors seeking exposure to precious metals in their portfolios.
The German firm which opened a gold vending machine at Munich Airport last year added a second at the spectacular Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi providing bars of 24-carat gold in one, five and 10 grammes, sold with a money back guarantee. "An extra special gift idea", says the publicity blurb. But a sign too of growing unease about sovereign debts built up by so many countries around the world. Adrian Ash - head of research at BullionVault.com, an online service for gold bullion trading and ownership - says: "Gold owners have more than trebled their money in the last five years, and quadrupled it since spring 2000."
Mick Gilligan, at brokers Killik & Co, says: "The fund is up 37% over the past year, in line with a 36% appreciation in the spot gold price, with strong demand from central banks such as China and India supporting the high prices."
Around half of Bullion Vault's client base is UK-based, holding an average 33 ounce of gold apiece - worth £23,000. Ash adds: "People buy gold when they don't trust the alternatives. Gold has risen by more than 15% versus the pound, and a coalition cabinet, near-zero rates of interest and fast-spreading fears of a genuine Government debt crisis all point to further gains ahead.
“
He says investors could use their full £10,100 ISA allocation - £20,200 per couple - to have a tax-free exposure to gold markets through BlackRock Gold & General, if not to the metal itself. "It is prudent to have between 2.5% and 10% of an overall portfolio exposed to gold. A higher figure making sense the more negative you expect the effects of inflation may be", he adds. A racier play on current upheavals and the flight to gold as a safe haven is the £28 million Junior Mining fund. Around 70% of the fund is invested in small mining firms, with the top four holdings in Medusa (Southern Philippines); Centamin (Egypt), Norseman Gold (Australia) and Spanish Mountain Gold, based in Canada. Private investors are strongly advised to take advice from a financial advisor (IFA) before they invest.
While gold can offer
security and capital growth, it rarely provides income
”
But Junior Mining fund manager Angelos Damaskos says: "We see the macro-economic background as very favourable to us, with massive debt problems in Greece and elsewhere, including the UK and US. Historically, the chosen way governments escape this problem is to print money. "Although some strong currencies remain - notably the Canadian dollar, the Australian dollar, the Norwegian Kroner and the safe haven Swiss franc - investors are seeking other stores of value, and gold is an obvious choice."
aviva has launched an online retirement calculator, to make it easier for customers to understand annuity options available to them and to work out the likely income from a pension fund without the need to disclose personal details.
Income is minimal too from BlackRock Gold and General, a celebrated £2.1billion fund which invests For more information, visit www.aviva.co.uk/annuities.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class cabriolet
The astonishingly vast Mercedes-Benz line-up has become a little simpler of late, with the CLK coupe and cabriolet models being replaced by new versions badged E-Class.
I
f there is a German equivalent of the Plain English Campaign, it may well be jumping with Teutonic joy. The CLK experiment was a highly successful one for Mercedes, with the rebranded E-Class variants proving more popular than ever, but as much of that was surely down to the quality of the vehicles as it was the allure of a more exotic moniker. The E-Class badge allows the uninitiated, or those simply daunted by a list of prefixes that would give a computer programmer nightmares, more of an insight into what's on offer in terms of size and the place in the range.
for rear seat passengers. There's a much reduced degree of buffeting at speed, extending the options for top-down driving as the reduced air movement within the cabin allows a steady temperature to be maintained using the climate control and, for front seat passengers, the neck warming AirScarf system. The trade off is a steady whoosh as air diverts around the device.
“
refinement, good looks and spaciousness makes the E350 CGI Cabriolet simply excellent
Ironically, as identification has become simpler, the car itself has become more complicated. Always a leader in technology and innovations, Mercedes has not been resting on its laurels with the new E-Class Cabriolet. Using the same two-door, four-seat layout as the E-Class Coupe, the new Cabriolet features a canvas The big development comes in the shape of the new roof. It's a very discreet piece of canvas however, with AirCap system. A simple idea neatly executed, the the vehicles rising belt line only requiring a small piece AirCap extents from the top of the window frame and acts as a frontal defector sending the airflow arcing over of fabric to cover the occupants. The Cabriolet manages the top of the car and improving interior refinement with to retain the same enormous glass house as the Coupe, an impressive feat that aids visibility and gives the cabin the roof down. an airy feel. It works well, although the effects are more noticeable

MOTORING Stowing in less than 20 seconds, the roof takes a chunk out of the reasonably accommodating boot space but leaves a delicious profile in its absence. On the way back up it pours into place in an eerily hushed manner, with the exception of a reassuring clunk as it hooks into the windscreen frame. Mercedes claims the canvas roof offers the same rollover resistance as the fixed-head coupe, an impressive feat. A range of three diesel and four petrol engines is available on the new model, all boasting the Blue Efficiency badge with the exception of the range topping E500 V8. The 3.5-litre 288bhp unit in the E350 CGI seems particularly well suited to the E-Class Cabriolet. Naturally more refined than the impressive diesel units, its performance doesn't fall far short of the range topping model, all be it without the distinctive V8 rumble.
the E-Class Cabriolet feels solid roof up or down
“
”
Mercedes' seven-speed automatic transmission is a key component in the model's driveability, too. It offers a range of ratio's that means the E350 CGI is never caught wanting. Slick changes come quickly when low speed cruising, upping the pace and selecting the sport option allows the gears to be held for longer, wringing out the power from the top of the rev range. It's reactive enough to negate the need to use the paddle shifters and the model's responsive chassis can be enjoyed using the fully auto setting. The light canvas roof and chunky, high-shouldered body means the E-Class Cabriolet feels solid roof up or down, with scuttle shake virtually eradicated and an ability to ride bumps that's within touching distance of the E-Class saloon. And thanks to a spacious cabin, the impressive level of interior refinement and high quality materials can be enjoyed by four occupants. A genuine four-seater, the rear can comfortably accept two adults with large doors and automatic sliding seats making it easy to access. With its high end specification and clever innovations the E-Class Cabriolet is not a simple car, but adhering to a list of simple qualities such as refinement, good looks and spaciousness makes the E350 CGI Cabriolet simply excellent.

Reduced rates offered in Wyre as free swimming ends Don't give up on a great way to stay healthy when free swimming comes to an end. That's the message from Wyre Borough Council and the Fylde Coast YMCA who are determined to make Wyre's three public pools as affordable as possible. As part of nationwide cuts in public spending, the Government has decided that central funding for free swimming for children and older people will come to an end on 31 July, eight months earlier than the original March 2011 cut off.
but in the water I don’t feel my aches and pains the same. I go at my own pace swimming anything from 10 to 30 lengths, but also some days I just relax in the water and do some gentle stretches. "Taking up swimming really has helped me and I’m not going to give up now." One alternative for Mrs Gibson and thousands like her is the free Wyre Access discount scheme available all year round to the over 60s, students over 16, benefit recipients and people who have been referred via their GP. The card also extends to fitness and relaxation classes, gyms and sports courts.
Wyre Borough Council is not in a financial position to continue the scheme alone, as Councillor Lynne Bowen, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, explained: "No one is more frustrated than the council that the plug is being pulled on free swimming earlier than planned, especially as it proved particularly popular in Wyre. "Altogether more than 32,000 people took advantage of the free offer and with the financial pressures that all public sector organisations are now facing, we simply cannot afford to fund such a high number of free swims ourselves. "We will of course continue to offer subsidised rates where we can to the over 60s, juniors and others on low incomes. Hopefully this will encourage people to carry on the good work they've already done through regular swimming."
Mike Vernon, Wyre Leisure Director for Fylde Coast YMCA, commented: "We are obviously disappointed with the Government’s decision as more people than ever have been using Wyre’s swimming pools since the start of the scheme in April 2009.
"However we are already looking at ways to ensure that swimming is still an attractive and affordable activity option for all ages. In addition to the Access card, throughout August we shall be promoting a fantastic offer which keeps swimming at a low cost Mrs Gibson said: "I am upset the free swimming offer for parents and adults." has come to an end, but as long as I can swim, I’m going to keep going. I feel fantastic. I swim four to Details of entry charges and the Access scheme are five times a week now and as well as toning up, I’ve available from all Fylde Coast YMCA centres or gone from a size 20 to a size 16. online at www.fyldecoastymca.org People like Alias Gibson, aged 70 from Thornton, who got back into swimming at the Poulton YMCA through the free initiative.

T.C.F.C With the 2010 /2011 season edging ever closer all Thornton Cleveleys Football Club teams from the Junior squads to the Seniors squads are stepping up their pre season training to become best prepared for the season that lies ahead in their respective leagues. The newly promoted 1st team, who are to pit their strengths in the West Lancashire Premier League for the very first time in the clubs history, are already weeks in to their build up to the new campaign. Team manager John Mendonca who has guided the team, ably assisted by his backroom staff to back to two back to promotions commented. “We are all looking forward to the season ahead and the new challenges it will bring. Pre season training began a number of weeks ago and has been well attended. We have welcomed a number of new faces to the club and we are confident these individuals will add strength and quality to the senior section. It will undoubtedly play a big part in this seasons campaign. Mendonca was also keen to stress the importance of promoting from within the club and looked towards the Under 18s section which went from strength to strength last season for upcoming talent. “It has been especially pleasing to see the enthusiasm and attitude of our younger players from the U18’s section coming through the ranks after regularly impressing last season and a number of these players.” JUNIOR NEWS Managers from all age groups have been busy during the closed season fine tuning their squads and strengthening were needed. Not an enviable task considering the glut of talent available on the Fylde Coast . With Under 11s – Under 16s restricted to a 16 man squad on match days it often sees good players unable to be accommodated. One Junior coach commented “With the squad that I have already, many of whom have been with me from soccer school , I only needed two or three players to strengthen my team . From the boys that we had down to trials I could of taken another 5 or 6 such was the quality, but unfortunately I have had to disappoint some which is crying shame!” Under 13s and Under 14s look make plans for their touring year.2010/2011 season again sees two TCFC sides embarking on a season end football
www.thorntonclevleysfc.org tours. Shaun Rowleys Under 13s and Andy Hulmes Under 14s are the chosen sides to represent their club and are busy in the early planning stages of making it all happen. With the end of May school holidays the mostly likely dates for the respective tours to take place venues for either team have not yet been decided. Spain , France ,Italy. (Even Dubai touted by one of the very hopeful Under 13s players ) have been put in the melting pot but with last years two touring sides thoroughly enjoying their time on the South coast of England this is still an avenue worth exploring . Whatever is decided one thing is already certain, as previous touring sides have found out ,is the sheer hard work required to raise sufficient funds to make it all happen. The fund raising is the responsibility of the team in question with players ,parents and coaches eager to come up with enough ideas to get the funds flowing. 100 clubs ,Charity Balls, raffles ,carol singing ,sponsored runs ,walks, bike rides and any other ideas listened too . If over the coming months you see a TCFC team offering to back your bags in any of the local supermarkets – Please Please give generously as it is a worthwhile cause. It is hoped that what ever fundraising events take place they will be well attended and not just by those directly linked to the respective age groups. The organizing committees will welcome anyone on board who can offer help or suggestions that can be put in to practice to help the cause. This seasons fundraisers hope all age groups will take an active part one way or the other as when it was or will be their touring year they know what a tough job it can be . One of last years organizers commented “Last season our Under 11s and Under 14s worked long and hard to raise enough funds to tour and it felt at times the final figure was never going to be reached .But with everybody pulling in the same direction it eventually became a reality .Everyone had a fantastic time and none of this could of happened without the generosity of many people and the hard work of relatively few .On our return everybody agreed it had been well worth the effort.” Anybody wishing to offer support to either of our touring sides please contact :- David Wilson on 07753 749892.
