Community First Responders are an intrinsic part of the North West Ambulance Service. Responders do not replace dispatching an ambulance but are uniquely placed within their local area to responder rapidly and attend to provide vital life-saving treatment. How it works Responders work as part of a local team. They are on call and are dispatched when an emergency life threatening call is received by the ambulance service. Since they are based within the communities they cover, they are often able to get to a scene first and provide critical care prior to the arrival of the ambulance. Responders are trained to deal with life threatening conditions and carry equipment such as oxygen and an automatic defibrillator designed to provide electric shocks to restart the heart. So what is it like being a community first responder? Being a community first responder has allowed me to feel like I am giving something to the community, helping people who really need some support. Some jobs are just providing some oxygen to someone who is having trouble breathing to helping someone stay safe after a fit. Some jobs are literally trying to save a person’s life. A typical duty would consist of checking the kit is all in working order, notifying control of your availability and waiting. Some days you can be sat there and get no calls, others you can get several and each job is different. Do you have to stop what you are doing? The short answer is no, ideally first responders would be available 24 hours a day but with most of us having busy lives we do know that for many people things crop up and you might have to come of duty all we ask is that you let someone know as somebody else in the group may be able to respond. But I don’t I need to know first aid? Community first responders are trained and equipped, by North West ambulance service and have to pass regular assessments. How much training is involved? The initial training is approximately 28 hours, followed by regular group meetings within your local area, which provide support and assistance to each other. http://www.nwas-responders.info

Heart charity, Heart Research UK, is looking for walkers in the Lancashire to join the fight against heart disease by putting on their walking boots and tackling the challenges of the Lyke Wake Walk or the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 2010. The walks will both be held in June of this year anyone can take part with friends, family or colleagues; everyone is welcome. On Saturday 5 June walkers can take up the challenge of the Lyke Wake Walk. It’s a demanding 40 mile crossing of the North Yorkshire Moors from Ravenscar to Osmotherley, with participants challenged to complete the walk in less than 24 hours. It is a hard walk, not for the faint hearted; it involves climbing 5000ft and is undulating with a number of short steep climbs and two ravines, coupled with peat bog crossings.

The event takes place on Saturday 19 June and covers three of the highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales – Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The 25 mile challenge provides spectacular scenery, gets your heart pumping and helps to raise money for pioneering research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. The charity needs as many dedicated, physically fit people as possible to do one, two, or even three peaks to help it continue the fight against heart disease.

Ten things you didn’t know about general elections
Topical Feature With a general election imminent in the next three months we thought now would be the time to give you some mildly interesting facts about this much anticipated event. Here they are: Hanging in the wind With the Conservative lead narrowing, media pundits are talking about the increasing likelihood of a hung parliament, a situation where no single party has a clear majority of seats. This last happened in 1974 and anyone who things it would be a good thing might like to study that period of British political history.
New Faces Since the last election all three main parties have acquired new leaders. The last time that happened was in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher came to power. David Cameron may well take that as a good sign.

LINK-Community Fleetwood Churches Together During this season of Lent, as we build up to our Easter celebrations, we would be delighted to welcome everyone to our Lent Talks and Lent Lunches. The Lent Talks take place each Wednesday evening during Lent, at Mount Church, starting at 7.30pm. Each week there will be a different speaker, each talking on the theme “I Believe in the Holy Spirit”. Afterwards there will be a “Question & Answer” session, followed by fellowship and gossip over a brew. The first talk has already taken place, in Feb when Canon Dick Cartmell, from the Anglican Church, started the talks off in his own inimitable, thought provoking way. Wednesday 10th March – Rev Frank Sudworth – a Minister in the Full Gospel Church. Wednesday 17th March – Rev Dr. Bill Davies – A Minister in the Methodist Church. Wednesday 24th March – Fr. Chris Loughran – a Priest in the Roman Catholic Church. The Lent Lunches are held at different churches each Friday lunch-time, from 11.45am to 1.15pm. The lunch consists of soup, a roll, and a piece of cheese, together with tea/coffee. At each host church there will be a “Bring and Buy” stall, and, also, a stall selling “Help for Heroes” merchandise. “Help for Heroes” is this year’s chosen charity to receive all donations made for the lunch and from the sale of goods. We have already held the first two successful lunches – February 19th at Mount Church, and February 26th at St. David’s Church. Thank you for starting us off so well. Friday 12th March – at St. Paul’s Church – Darbishire Road. Friday 19th March – at St. Nicholas Church – Highbury Avenue. Friday 26th March – at St. Peter’s Church – Lord Street. Good Friday – 2nd April – Walk of Witness – will begin from St. Peter’s Church at 12.00noon. Because of the work disrupting Lord Street, the route has been changed. We will walk from St. Peter’s, along North Albert Street, Fleetwood Hospital, Euston Gardens, Lifeboat Station, Ferry, along Dock Street to Victoria Street, Market, back to North Albert Street, then back to St.
Peter’s Church for refreshments and Easter Saturday – 8.00pm Mass hot-cross buns, stopping for “Stations of St. Wulstan’s Church – Poulton Road the Cross” - a hymn and a reading – Maundy Thursday – 8.00pm Mass during the walk. Good Friday - 11.00am Stations of the Good Friday – 2nd April – Sunset Cross & 3.00pm Service – 7.30pm on the “Green Hill”, Easter Sunday – 10.00am Mass behind the Log Cabin, opposite the Sea St. David’s Church – Fleetwood Road Cadet Base. School Holiday Club The Fleetwood Town soccer club proved successful during last half-term and was held on the Memorial Park, with use of the Highbury Stadium facilities. The club’s community youth coach Melissa Brown invited the youngsters to the first team game against Northwich Victoria at the end of February as a reward for their hard work. Melissa put the youngsters through their drills on the pitch at half-time under the guidance of first-team players Stephen Torpey and Danny Hurst. The next Fleetwood Town holiday football is at Easter when two courses will be held. The cost of the course is £10 per day or £40 for the week. James and Andrew Pendlebury joined the first team when they appeared as mascots for the game against Northwich Victoria. Fleetwood Town U18 skipper Adam Sumner travelled to Rome with the English Colleges FA national squad. The team made the journey to Italy in February to take part in the "Caput Mundi" youth tournament. During the group stages the English team faced tough opposition and lost 2-1 against Slovenia. Sumner came on at half time and then played for 90 minutes in the defeat to Romania. The last game of the tournament was lost on penalties to Greece.
Captain Cod goes back to school Fleetwood Town mascot Captain Cod paid a surprise visit to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Fleetwood at the end of February. The pupils were studying animals that are endangered species and cod is on the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) at risk list.
Remaining Blue Square North home games Captain Cod first visited reception class and then enjoyed various stalls run by the pupils.
