Brighten up your home

colour

with Put on your sunglasses because today's rooms should be splashed with vibrant colour, otherwise they'll be sad and dated. Get clued up on colour with our guide.

C

olour is back in fashion but even if you're immune to its dĂŠcor potential you might be won over by its power to change your mood. Just as the sight of sunny blue skies or vistas of green fields outdoors may cheer and soothe us, that same effect can be echoed inside our homes by using similar shades for walls or furnishings. "Choosing the right colour palette for your rooms is a vital part of creating a home," says author, Vinny Lee, who reveals the psychology of colour and gives practical guidance on choosing shades in her new book, The Colourful Home.

6

Go for green Green has many hues and this year zingy lime greens are on trend. "Lime green is a bright, zesty colour that provides an eye-catching background to black and chrome and colourful accessories," says Vinny. "Olive green, traditionally the colour of peace, blends well with a natural palette using woods and brown, ochre and yellow shades. But check out a colour swatch in natural and artificial light as it can look predominantly green by day but muddy in electric light."

TOP TIP Dark green can be used to dramatic effect in a candlelit dining room or other areas used mostly in the evening. In a bathroom, it can give a feeling of enthusiasm and brightness to preparations at the start of a day.

Vibrantly red

Follow Vinny's guide to colourful rooms...

Red never fails to have an impact but it's a powerful colour and care should be taken that it doesn't overwhelm especially in a small space. "Although red brings drama and excitement to a room, too much pure or undiluted red can promote feelings of overheating and anxiety," says Vinny. "It makes a good highlight colour though and can be effective for a focal point such as a chimney breast, in alcoves, or for a statement piece of furniture."

Red: "This hot, emotional colour is associated with energy, passion and desire," says Vinny.

The power of colour

Exposure to it is thought to induce physical changes, such as speeding up the metabolism, which may help improve poor circulation and raise energy levels.

TOP TIP If you paint a wall in red and it is opposite a window, the natural light will help to tone the shade down, whereas less light will make the chosen shade appear deeper.

Zesty is pre yellow one of th dicted to be e colours most popular fo 2010 as r interiors in it's with p credited cheerfuromoting lnes positiv s and ity.

Yellow: Is associated with joy, happiness, intellect and energy. Blue: Traditionally associated with masculinity, this colour is believed to have the effect of slowing the metabolism and blood pressure and producing a feeling of calm. Green: Green links to nature and symbolises freshness, abundance, harmony and growth, and it's reputed to have healing powers. Purple: Light purple is associated with romance and nostalgia, while dark purple has royal connotations of wealth and solidarity, but may also be connected with feelings of sadness.

Cool blues

Passion for purples

Blues evoke images of bright skies or seaside landscapes. They can give a fresh feel for a bathroom and light blues particularly may suit bedrooms especially those for children. "Blues have a calming effect and are refreshing, but they can create a feeling of coldness, which could make a room feel depressing," warns Vinny. "So choose your shade carefully, and test it out in different lights. Pin up a blue rug or throw on a wall and gauge your reaction to it over a week or so."

Plums and purples can give an injection of richness and warmth to rooms "Purple is said to be a good colour with which to decorate a space where contemplation or meditation is to take place," says Vinny. Purple and black is a strong and striking combination and when combined with chrome, these shades can be used to create Art Deco period style. Light purple partners well with dark woods such as mahogany and cherry wood.

Orange: Orange is a vigorous and vital colour, which represents readiness, enthusiasm and happiness and is a stimulating colour.

U

nemployment could hit 3 million by midsummer, says the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) - partly because of rising inflation and the rise in VAT. Counting the pennies this year could be more important than last.

People should review their finances on a regular basis

says Clare Francis at moneysupermarket.com.

Ms Francis estimates an average household could save £4,000 a year- simply by getting the cheapest deals in those areas of spending which few of us can avoid, like mortgage repayments and energy bills.

Here are some spending checks which any household can make:

1. mortgages Use low interest rates to overpay your mortgage, while 'interest only' borrowers who switch to capital repayment terms with their current lender may be surprised by savings in the long-term.

2. Get the cheapest loan Nationwide BS thinks many consumers with debts spread across credit and store cards, overdrafts and loans could make a big saving by consolidating the debts into its new personal loans costing a typical 7.6% APR on £7,500 -£14,999 for up to five years, the rate

5. Home and motor insurance comparison site Gocompare.com reckons a potential 21 million drivers are missing out on cheaper cover. Also, only 19% of consumers switched their home insurer in the last year.

For savers prepared to set aside £250 per month, moneysupermarket tips the Norwich & Peterboro' BS Family Regular Saver, paying 5%.

9. Energy bills obvious ways to save, says Will Marples at comparison service uSwitch.com, include paying by direct debit, switching to duel fuel, and signing up to an online plan which are around £300 a year cheaper than standard energy plans.

FORD FOCUS ECONETIC STOP-START The new Econetic Focus offers the right mix of characteristics and qualifies for the lowest road tax band.

Eco friendly

T

here's no point in beating around the bush. The big news from Ford is that the new Econetic Focus equipped with a Stop-Start system produces 99g/km CO2. That means that it qualifies for the lowest road tax band, costing the owner nothing per year. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Somewhat confusingly the other big news is that there is no other big news. Major changes have taken place out of sight but, as far as the rest of the model goes, it's business as usual. That is very good news indeed as, until recently, the Ford Focus was the best selling car in the UK. For this to be the case it clearly offers the right mix of characteristics; tampering with the recipe too much would be a bad idea. It's worth noting that it was an internal power struggle.

The Focus was deposed by the Ford Fiesta. Smaller but cheaper, more efficient and offering a more attractive deal for many under the scrappage scheme - these factors surely helped knock the Focus from top spot. The new Econetic models claw some of that ground back, without sacrificing the space and creature comforts that car buyers in their thousands have come to expect from the class-leading B-segment hatchback. Based on the popular Zetec model there has been little scrimping on equipment or trim. Dual zone air-con, electric front windows and electric mirrors are standard fit. Alloys wheels, sat-nav and parking sensors can all be specified. In fact the only option not carried over from the Zetec model is the heated front windscreen.

MOTORING The Focus staples remain; a well proportioned boot with a large portal, a particularly spacious cabin with good rear legroom, uniformly generous headroom and a robust, family friendly and neatly styled interior are all carried over. leetwood Museum's new Coffee House opened to the public on Thursday (April 1st). After months of planning, consultation and construction, the new facility finally welcomed its first customers. The Coffee House has access to the internet to allow local and family history research and is ultra modern with a dark walnut finish. A focal point of the new cafe is the magnificent stained glass window, which was previously installed in the 6th Form Study at Fleetwood Grammar School in 1964. The window, a memorial to former pupils who lost their lives in World War Two, depicts the horrors of war. Originally designed by the school's Head of Art, Mrs. A. Haworth, the window has remained in store at the County Museums Headquarters in Preston.

Fleetwood Museum The Coffee House will be serving Atkinson of Lancaster coffees, our own Sir Peter's blend and other beverages. Cakes, pastries, sandwiches, toasties and panninis are also available. Alongside the Coffee House, the Museum shop has undergone a refurbishment and features a range of themed gifts alongside a wide variety of local history, maritime and children's book titles. Both the shop and coffee house can be accessed without paying for entry to the museum. Museum opening times are from 11.00 – 16.00 from Monday to Saturday and 13.00 – 16.00 on Sundays.

Early in May, individuals and organisations who have contributed to the cost of returning the window to Fleetwood, will be invited to a private official unveiling. COMMUNITY Hello again, it seems barely a few days ago that I wrote last months introduction into us, your Neighbourhood Policing Team for Fleetwood. You will recall that at the end of that article I urged you all to get to your local PACT meetings each month on your Ward areas and explained that you can find details of where they all are by putting your postcode into our Lancashire Constabulary website. It is important for a number of reasons that you get to these PACT meetings. PACT stands for Police And Communities Together and what that means, in a nutshell, is that we cannot operate alone, we need your help as much as you may, from time to time, need ours. It is your community, your road or street and you know who is doing what in those places. These PACT meetings shape, to a large extent, the activities we do each month, through local people telling us and our partner agencies and your Councillors, what your local issues and problems are and how they might be resolved. At the end of the meeting each Ward will agree up to three main priorities for the coming month and these will form the focus of activity for the Neighbourhood Policing Team on those Wards.

into the park enabling us to direct officers straight to those people and confiscate the drink. In March alone we seized 75 litres of alcoholic drinks across the town, often this is first noticed by the CCTV system leading officers to those irresponsible youths with whom we take firmer action. There is a clear and definite link between underage drinking, rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour, increased criminal damage and other offences. This has a serious affect on the safety of your community as well as putting those that are drinking at much greater risk of harm. It is for these reasons we need to continue our work seizing alcohol with the aid of the town centre, publicly funded, CCTV system, which is greatly assisting in our efforts to improve the quality of life in your town. If you want to know what activities are available in the town for your sons and daughters, or indeed if you want it for yourself, just contact any member of our team and we will be glad to assist. This will remain a PACT Priority for the area and the work will be ongoing throughout the coming months by your Neighbourhood Police Teams.

You said: Anti social behaviour around the shops on Chatsworth Avenue was an ongoing problem. We did: High visibility patrols have been maintained in the area, especially in the evenings, over the past months. PC Lester, the CBM for These priorities are also fed into a PACT Panel meeting which the area has been targeting the main offenders in recent months and as a result we are seeing reports of Anti social is held between various community leaders and behaviour are reducing but targeted patrols of the area will be representatives from Lancashire County Council, Fleetwood Town Council, Fleetwood Forum, the Youth Mayor, the Police, maintained in the coming summer months. We have received the Fire Service and the Wyre Community Safety Partnership. good feedback from Town Councillors to the effect that the problem is much reduced from last year but in any case we are This Panel discusses each of the ward priorities and also undertaking an in depth survey of all residents in that establishes what are the three main ones for the whole town vicinity, similar to the one we did for the park, to make sure and these, once chosen, are then subject to our Policing Pledge, which essentially commits us to respond to any calls in what we are having reported to us is correct. relation to them within one hour. In addition to all of this, it is also vital that you let us know of criminal activities in your areas, so that we can continue to All of the other concerns raised at the ward PACT meetings drive down crime and all of its associated ills, for example, you will also receive specific attention by the relevant Community told us, through Crimestoppers, about a house in Fleetwood Beat Manager and PCSO’s. where you thought there was suspicious activity taking place. So what have we been doing? You said: Anti social behaviour in Memorial Park was an issue. We did: Operation ‘Friday Night Project’ has been set up in the area in response to the concerns raised. All residents in the area were surveyed and the aim is to reduce the numbers of youths congregating and prevent this deteriorating into anti social behaviour. We have been making positive interventions with the well behaved youths and speaking with parents to find more positive outlets for them, providing them with comprehensive lists of activities that are available for the young people. The park is covered by CCTV and good use is being made of it in detecting those present bringing alcohol

So please assist us in our ambition to make Fleetwood as safe as possible, by attending any of the regular PACT Meetings and sharing your knowledge with us. Remember details are available at the police station or at www.lancashire.police.uk If you cannot get to the police station and have no internet access, you can telephone the department direct on 604911 and leave a message and one of my team will call you back within 24hours with the information. This is not a staffed number so do not use it if you require the police to attend more urgently than within 24hours. If this is the case call 0845 1 25 35 45 or 999 in an emergency of if a crime is being committed. As ever, if you have any information that will help in our fight against crime or disorder, you can call Crimestoppers for free and anonymously on 0800 555 111. Sgt David Blight, Fleetwood Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The teams all play in the North Valley league which takes in opposition from the Fylde coast and east Lancashire. The finals all took place on the same day in Lytham and one team came away with silverware. The U10's, managed by Dave Rankine, beat Rishton 2-0 to lift the cup in their first full season. The U12's came up against league leaders Mill Hill but missed out in a very close game. “Miss Fleetwood Town under 15 players Steph Massie and Emily McCarthy show off the new kit Fleetwood Town are stepping back in time as they replace their second choice kit. The club will switch to amber and black stripped shirts, a kit they played in before changing to the now familiar colours of red and white. Town started playing in red shirt and white sleeves around 1919. The club colours were previously amber and black and changed to red and white as part of an arrangement with a trawler company whose own corporate branding was red and white. The kit has already proved popular with supporters in the club shop and manager Micky Mellon said "Remembering the club's history is very important and this is a good way to mark our heritage."
