The rapid growth of the Chinese economy over the last few years has now resulted in a massive demand for good quality Chinese antiques, with many of the better off Chinese attempting to buy back some of their” heritage”, in other words, some of the high quality items historically exported/ plundered over the last four hundred years. It is this rapidly increasing demand that has caused a continual upsurge in prices at antique auctions all over the UK, with some of the buyers being Chinese based in China and others all over the world. La Boheme at the Grand Theatre Blackpool La Boheme joins tour to make a trio of exquisite operas performances DESCRIBED as “genuinely exquisite”, with “extraordinary performances”, Ellen Kent’s spring opera tour visits Blackpool in March - with a brand new production of La Boheme. Madama Butterfly and La Traviata delighted audiences back in November and the new tour adds the romantic and emotional La Boheme – playing at just 16 of the 75 performances around the UK and Ireland.
The productions took 18 months to bring to stage – and have been well worth waiting for – with Russian designer Nadezhda Shvets praised for the gorgeous sets and the £25,000-worth of silk gowns, including antique wedding kimonos from Japan, borrowed from Ellen described as “ravishingly beautiful” Ellen said: “I try to make my operas engaging and sometimes I get carried away with interesting additions but with these there is no spin – just the drama and the beauty. I honestly think they are the best I’ve ever done.”
The internationally acclaimed Ukrainian National Opera of Kharkiv, joined by a host of handpicked soloists from across the world and accompanied by the Kharkiv theatre orchestra, has been singing to rave reviews.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles, La Boheme, based on Henri Murger’s novel Scenes de la vie de boheme, focuses on the love between seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo. After falling in love instantly, Rodolfo later leaves Mimi due to her flirtatious behaviour, although he wracked by guilt since their life together has probably worsened Mimi’s delicate constitution. In true tragic opera fashion, the pair reunite briefly at the end before Mimi dies.
After a two-year break to concentrate on other projects, Ellen’s comeback tour has proved a triumph – prompting packed theatres and sackfuls of good-will messages.
Presented by Derek Block Concert Promotions, one of the biggest international promoters in the entertainments industry, the tour visits the Grand Theatre in Blackpool on March 6.
The award-winning director and producer said: “It’s so rewarding to hear how much enjoyment people get from my operas. It’s good to know I haven’t lost my touch!”
International sopranos Elena Dee and Maria Tsonina take the leading role of Mimi, while “ladies favourite” Andriy Perfilov Rodolfo. They are joined by a 70-strong company including tenor Ruslan Zinevych, who has sung with Pavarotti and performed Ellen’s operas at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
And true to Kent form, the new production of La Boheme features a few surprises alongside the stunning sets and glorious music. Madama Butterfly and La Traviata both featured children from local weekend drama schools. Now the appeal has gone out for dogs and a brass band – as the new production introduces a local element to each venue. 22

BJFF – On the Playing Field – December Review…. At the younger end of the spectrum, our Development Squad (ages 3 and 4) and Under 6’s continue to train once a week, on a Saturday morning, whilst our 4 x Under 7’s teams, and 4 x Under 8’s teams are enjoying their first seasons of organised football, in a noncompetitive environment, as part of the Poulton & District Primary League friendly fixture programme. We are unable to publish results of these matches, but our boys and girls are doing very well. With the weather hitting us badly during December, our Under 9’s Blades went through the entire month without playing a game, but remain in the hunt and can go top of the league if they win their games in hand. Our Predators only had one fixture, and came up against title favourites St Annes. After a defeat in the first game, an inspired comeback during game 2 saw our boys and girl almost shock St Annes, playing the full 40 minutes a player down and coming away in the end with a narrow 3-4 defeat.
