“GRANDFATHER” MAKES £3000! AT GERRARDS AUCTION
A longcase clock, also tall case, floor clock, or grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case. Clocks of this style are commonly 1.8-2.4 metres (6-8feet) tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood or bonnet, which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face. The English clockmaker William Cement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Most longcase clocks are striking clocks, which means they sound the time on each hours or fraction of an hour. The term “grandfather”, “grandmother”, and “granddaughter” have all been applied to longcase clocks. Although there is no specifically defined difference among these terms, the general consensus seems to be that a clock smaller than 1.5m (5ft) is a granddaughter; over 1.5m (5ft) is a grandmother; and over 1.8m (6ft) is a grandfather. George III Mahogany Longcase Clock,circa 1770, in the Chippendale style, the hood fitted with swan neck pediment and finials to top, fitted with glazed door opening to reveal silvered chapter dial with Roman numerals, surrounded by a gilt face, with painted moon face above. The face is fitted with a name plate inscribed ‘Clifton, Liverpool’, probably for John Clifton, who was working during the latter half of the 18th century. The face door fitted with half-round fluted columns to sides and set between fluted column supports, the body decorated with plain dentil moulding to top and blind fretwork below, fitted with door opening to reveal pendulum and double weighted movement, the case having quarter-round fluted columns, body supported on base with architectural key stone effect to sides, raised on plinth base, measuring approximately 8ft high.

Keep Out The Cold! Stay Warm and Well In Blackpool Blackpool Council today launched its new advice leaflet entitled Keep Out The Cold! as part of its campaign to protect the most vulnerable members of the community from the extremes of seaside weather.
Coun. Rowson stressed the Keep Out The Cold! campaign complements the Council’s ongoing work through services such as Care & Repair.
The leaflet has been funded through the Government’s She continued: “We’re enlisting the help and support of Warm Homes, Healthy People initiative which runs local organisations and faith and voluntary groups to get from January to March this year. the message out.” Special card thermometers are being distributed with the leaflet as part of the Council’s ongoing Community Cold Weather Project. These will enable people to identify the ideal temperature for their rooms.
The cross-community scheme has the support of partners including NHS Blackpool, Age Concern, Neighbourhood Action, Carers’ Centre, British Red Cross, the Senior Voice Forum and Community Volunteers.
In addition a new Warm Homes Helpline on 01253 476843 has opened to offer information and guidance on the wider range of help available to combat the cold.
If you know someone who would benefit from the leaflet you can collect a copy and thermometer card from Customer First at the Council’s main offices at Municipal Buildings, Corporation Street, Blackpool.
That help ranges from installing insulation, boilers and draught proofing to repairing boilers and advice on benefit entitlement. The leaflet was launched on national Fuel Poverty Awareness Day and Councillor Kath Rowson, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: “We’re wanting to help people stay warm and well in Blackpool. We all know cold and inclement weather can strike suddenly and fuel poverty is an issue for many households. The very young, the very old, those with mobility or health problems and the homeless are most vulnerable.

“This leaflet shows what you can do to avoid the weather’s worst effects and tells you where to go to access help and advice. It’s an important information resource, which we hope will be useful in future years too.”

BJFF - Football for ALL SKILLS Academy Initiative – Re-Branding...
BJFF – Club House / Sports Hall Development – New 3G Surface…
Our Football for ALL initiative has now been re-branded “Football for ALL Skills Academy” and welcomes children who are new to football, or who would just like some extra training, with the emphasis on a fun and friendly environment. Headed up by Level 2 coaches, Joe Rooney and Adam Monk, we have two age-group sessions on a Sunday morning. We welcome Boys and Girls aged between 4 and 8, each and every Sunday, from 10:00am - 11:15am, and then from 11:15am until 12:30pm we welcome Boys and Girls aged between 9 and 13. Trainers, Football Boots, Shin Pads and a Drink recommended. The BJFF Club House is on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road.
BJFF are delighted to announce that our indoor sports hall is going to benefit from the introduction of a new 3G Astro-Turf surface, a far safer and football friendly surface for all of our boys and girls to experience. The 3G surface is a significant investment in our children, and will be opened officially on Saturday 3rd March.
Training will be mainly indoors during the winter months, but when the weather permits we will be training outside. Newcomers will be given a warm welcome and ALL SQUAD children are encouraged to attend. Each regular participant will be presented with their very own Skills Academy tangerine training kit. If you are interested in coming along, with your son or daughter, you can simply turn up at the Club House on Sunday morning, or pre-book with Andy Griffiths on 07884 476954 (andygriff71@ yahoo.co.uk). The first session is FREE, and then it’s £3 thereafter.
BJFF – On the Playing Field – January Review… At the younger end of the spectrum, our Development Squad (ages 3 and 4) and Under 6’s continue to train once a week, on a Saturday morning, with all age group squads from Under 7’s onwards training / playing twice a week. In terms of fixtures, the poor January weather has put paid to most of the games scheduled to take place so far this year, but we hope as the weather improves our teams can get back into action. When we do resume, our Under 9’s Blades and Under 10’s Blades are both through to the Quarter Final of the Coulton Cup on Saturday 25th February, whilst our Under 11’s Blades, Under 15’s Whites and Under 16’s are all in Hogan Cup Quarter Final action the following day.
