Postcard from Blackpool The World Fireworks Championships got blown away in September, so hopefully Guy Fawkes Night will go with a bang, with the bonfire and fireworks at Blackpool Cricket Club on 5th November! We’ve all heard this rhyme and know it’s related to Bonfire Night and something to do with Guy Fawkes and the Houses of Parliament. Or was it the House of Commons?
Well, to try and clear up any doubts over what we are actually celebrating on 5 November every year, and how to celebrate it in style, we’ve put together a little guide. It’s only natural that we start right at the beginning with the history of Bonfire Night. The main cause for this near-catastrophic event in British history was, of course, stemmed in religion. When King James I came to the English throne in 1605 he established his power in the persecution of as many Catholics as possible, being a devout Protestant himself. Obviously, the Catholics, who weren’t even allowed to practice their beliefs, opposed this idea and the famous ‘Gunpowder Plot’ was born. Aiming to blow up the Houses of Parliament and all who were inside (namely King James), the group sent the legendary Guy Fawkes to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder hidden under the Parliament floors. He was found and arrested and the plan was blown to pieces. In celebration of his lucky escape, King James ordered for a bonfire to take place each year in remembrance.

Steeped in tradition, the whole of Britain comes out and enjoys 5 November year after year, no matter the weather. It’s probably better if the fire doesn’t turn to embers as quickly as it starts, but hey, whether it’s raining, blowing a gale or (fingers crossed!) crisp and dry, we all love a good bonfire.
Every bonfire party should never be without good food, whether it’s at an organised event or a private party at home, toffee apples and bonfire lollies are a must, as are marshmallows cooked over the open flames. Delicious, hearty food should always be provided, so think sausage casseroles, beef stews and chilli con carne, and a large glass of mulled wine or spiced cider is always a good idea for warming your hands on. Try hot apple juice and cinnamon for the kids. To get the most out of your bonfire, make sure you invest in some decent fireworks, and I don’t mean the £10 ones bought from your corner shop which just spit an array of colours whilst never moving off the ground. Check to see if there is a safe, organised firework event in your local area where all the family can enjoy the spectacular fireworks. Where else in the world can you stand around in the freezing cold, eating burnt sausages and roasted chestnuts watching the sky light up before you? BJFF – Season 2012/2013 – On the Playing Field...... Our Under 7’s (5-A-Side) and Under 8’s (7-A-Side) play in the Poulton & District Primary League, but due to the age of the children we are not allowed to publish results. Both age groups have a number of teams all enjoying their football. Our Under 9’s Blades, are top of the A league with 7 wins out of their first 8 games, a promising start in their first season of competitive football. In the Under 10’s A Division, last season’s title winners, our Under 10’s Blades, have also started well, unbeaten in their first 6 games to lie in 2nd position with 2 games in hand (3 points behind). In Division B, our Under 10’s Predators are third with 4 victories in their first 6 games, and in the C Division, our Under 10’s Vipers are themselves unbeaten, with 5 wins and a draw to be 6 points behind the leaders with 2 games in hand. Into the Under 11’s and our Blades 9-A-Side team have started the season on fire with 4 straight victories, scoring 36 goals in the process. All of our Saturday teams are demonstrating the quality of coaching provided at our Club. On a Sunday, in the Blackpool & District Youth League, our Under 11’s Blades 11-A-Side team are top of the Alpha league with 5 wins and a draw, whilst our Under 11’s Predators secured a memorable 6-1 win away to unbeaten AFC Blackpool, and continue to show promise. Our Under 12’s Blades lie 3rd with 2 wins out of their first 3 games, whilst our Under 13’s Predators have put behind them the loss of their best player, Alwyn Flynn, to Blackpool FC Academy, by winning 3 of their first 4 league games. In the Under 14’s Beta Division an excellent start from our boys sees them top the league with 4 wins out of 5 games, whilst our promotion winning Under 15’s are adjusting to life in the higher division winning one of 3 so far. Our Under 16’s Whites have won 2 out of 3 to lie 4th in the early season table. In other action, our Girls Under 15’s squad have had an outstanding start to the season, winning their first 3 games by an aggregate score of 29 goals to 5, and outstanding achievement from a fast improving squad. BJFF in the Community – Schools Coaching Programme Commenced...... We are delighted to announce that our Schools Coaching Programme has commenced, with Schools Liaison Officer Steve Spencer delivering high quality coaching sessions in core curriculum time and in some instances providing after school clubs. Sessions have started at Anchorsholme, Bispham Endowed, Kincraig, Manor Beach, Moor Park and St Bernadettes, with the latter using our 3G Astro-Turf sports hall facility. Other coaches are providing support to St Teresa’s and Montgomery High School. BJFF - Football for ALL SKILLS Academy Initiative – Update.... Our “Football for ALL Skills Academy” welcomes children who are new to football, or who would just like some extra training, with the emphasis on a fun and friendly environment. Headed up by Level 2 coaches, Joe Rooney and Adam Monk, we have two age-group sessions on a Sunday morning. We welcome Boys and Girls aged between 4 and 8, each and every Sunday, from 10:00am - 11:15am, and then from 11:15am until 12:30pm we welcome Boys and Girls aged between 9 and 13. Trainers, Football Boots, Shin Pads and a Drink recommended. The BJFF Club House, with our new 3G Astro-Turf surface, is on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road. Each regular participant will be presented with their very own Skills Academy tangerine training kit. If you are interested in coming along, with your son or daughter, you can simply turn up at the Club House on Sunday morning, or pre-book with Andy Griffiths on 07884 476954 (andygriff71@yahoo.co.uk). Will be launched in the near future for children who are new to football or who would just like some extra training, with the emphasis on a fun and friendly environment. Winter Training
Winter training on Stanley Park all-weather and sports centre The under 13s (school year 8) play in Division ‘B’, and welcome has been brought forward to commence week beginning 8th October 2012. This is a significant part of the clubs expenditure players to trial. The squad are raising funds for a trip abroad each year, providing good facilities for training.
