ON REC Children like getting messy IPES in the kitchen, but there’s more to us than chocolate rice crispy cakes! Children who take part in the Kiddy Cook kitchen don’t just get to make a cake, they get to conduct a ‘volcano’ experiment to learn how carbon dioxide works to make their cakes and biscuits rise. They learn the difference between taste and flavour and think about the effect sound has on their ability to eat.

APRIL 2012

Hello and welcome to the April edition of LINK-Magazine. Spring is in the air; lambs are happily knocking about the countryside, the daffodils are sprouting their majestic yellow flowers, and it looks like the sun is finally starting to shine. Let’s hope it continues for what is certain to be a fantastic Easter weekend! There’s lots of offers inside this month’s issue to help you enjoy it too, including for Blackpool Model Village and Farmer Parr’s Animal World. There’s also big St George’s Day celebrations going on towards April 23 in different areas of the Fylde – check out our FY8 edition online for a huge bash. And don’t forget Her Majesty’s birthday on Saturday April 21 – another (or any!) excuse for celebration! We’ve had over 300 entries (and counting) to WIN TWO FREE tickets to watch McFly and The Wanted at Blackpool’s Festival Headline event. We’ll announce the result and the winner in our May issue. Congratulations to the winners of last month’s competitions. Paul Heelis won our Where Am I? competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you! Also, Mr J Rourke won the James Jackson WIN Your MOT draw. A pat on the back to you both! Don’t forget, LINK-Magazine also offers competitive leaflet print and distribution for up to 96,000 homes and businesses across the Fylde Coast, as well as offering FREE What’s On listings for most local events. Lytham Window Company

t: 01253 762 811 web:www.lythamwindowco.co.uk Established in the 1980s by Dave Fletcher and joined shortly after by co-director Mark Hegarty, Lytham Windows is now moving into its fourth decade of trading, and is the longest established manufacturing UPVC company on the Fylde Coast. From humble beginnings to the purpose-built premises on Preston New Road, the company has come a long way, and over 100,000 retail, trade and commercial customers are testimony to its high standards of workmanship, service and quality. Managing Director Dave Fletcher said: “It’s fantastic the way our customers keep coming back to us time after time, and now, because we have been trading for so long, we are doing installations for our original customers’ grown-up children!” The prestige showroom has state of the art orangeries, doors, conservatories, and windows on display, all made to the highest standards in the on-site factory that can now make over 500 frames a week.

What has kept Lytham Windows the market leader all these years? “The customer is the most important person in the world,” Dave explained. “I insist on the highest standards of workmanship and professionalism from my staff, so customers know that each installation will be carried out cleanly and efficiently. “There is no high-pressure selling here, all quotes are put in writing so the customer can decide at their leisure, and each job carries a no-quibble 15-year guarantee along with a ten-year insurance-backed guarantee. “We are also a FENSA-registered company, which means that every installation is registered and certified as meeting as building regulations.” Competitive pricing and up-to-date computer technology, together with years of experience explain the company’s ever-growing popularity. And it is a well-known fact that consumers buy from people they like, so with the staff turnover at Lytham Windows so low, the same friendly faces greet customers time and time again.

Postcard from Cleveleys 30

I’ll start with my usual mention of the weather, and another lovely month and some gorgeous views across the sea at Cleveleys. You watch, summer will be a washout again! The Cleveleys Traders Group will be in need of some sunshine for their Classic Vehicle Event on 19 August. Plans are coming on well, and will see the promenade lined with cars as in previous years, along with strategically placed vehicles in the town centre too. Community groups and organisations can hire the performance area on the promenade at the end of Victoria Road West. If you like the sound of this to promote your group or stage a performance you can find out how in more detail from the website, and you’ll need a license from Wyre Council.

As I type, more improvements are being done along the promenade, with the road and pavement north of The Venue being resurfaced at long last, and new dropped kerbs will be added so that prams and disabled users can access the promenade more easily. Rossall Beach Residents & Community Group are busy sprucing the beach up for people who use it all year round, not just in summer, and are soon to provide something interesting on the promenade – watch this space!

Steps to Better Hearing Hearing loss is a gradual process and many people don’t realize the extent to which their hearing has deteriorated until others point it out. Meanwhile, changes in their activities of daily living reflect their diminished ability to hear (such as turning up the volume on the TV or asking people to speak louder). Often, other family members make compensations for the hearing impaired -- but at some point, even that is not enough, and the individual begins to shy away from social situations. The effects of untreated hearing loss can lead to anxiety, insecurity, isolation and depression. With the technology available today, hearing aids can significantly enhance the quality of life for most people with hearing impairment. Hearing aids are designed to make speech sounds clearer, and therefore easier to hear.

Those who opt for hearing aids experience better relationships with family and friends, higher self-esteem, improved mental health, and greater independence and security. Every hearing loss is different, and everyone’s listening needs are unique. Hearing aids vary widely in their styles, sizes and types of circuit technology. Considerations for device selection include your specific hearing-loss characteristics, physical anatomy and dexterity, lifestyle, preferences in device style and circuitry, and cost. As a truly independent hearing aid company Hear2 provides assistance in helping you determine the best device to meet your individual needs and preferences. There are no hidden agendas sales targets or supply agreements with particular manufacturers.

All hearing aids also include circuitry to keep sound from becoming too loud and to reduce the effects of If you would like a free hearing test plus impartial background noise. Thornton Cleveleys RUFC

This season of Rugby at ThorntonCleveleys RUFC is heading towards the business end with both teams each having just 4 fixtures left to play. You may or may not know that since the last issue the 1st team have been crowned champions! They managed this with a total of 6 games still unplayed! It’s a great achievement for everybody involved and a huge congratulations must go out to the coach and all the players. The 1st team headed towards this title victory by first travelling away to the Fylde Vandals. The games against these local rivals are always tough and a club as large as Fylde can always pull in quality players at the last minute, however Thornton-Cleveleys played superbly to come away with a 6 - 43 win. Next up for the 1st team was another trip away, this time to Orrell. The 1st team had beaten Orrell twice at home already this season, in the league and the cup but knew playing Orrell on their home turf wouldn’t be as clear cut as the rest. The boggy pitch counteracted TC’s flying backs and evened the game up but the lads gritted their teeth in their gumshields in the 2nd half and produced a good display of Rugby to get the win, 9 - 32. This game also saw the 1st team crowned champions as second placed Eccles were defeated and the points margin the 1sts had created was now unreachable. Now the 1st team have a different mission, with the league sewn up, the one’s are pushing for a full season unbeaten! They started well with a home fixture against Oldham who the 1sts had also already beaten twice this season, in the league and the cup but both these games

were played at Oldham’s ground. Thornton-Cleveleys used the home advantage and the great support to spur them on to a 46 - 5 victory. They then travelled to up to Penrith for a tough away fixture and put in one of the performances of the season to come away with a 13 - 20 win. The 1st team have 4 games left to play in Division 3 North of the University of Salford leagues. The 2nd team have had mixed fortunes during the last few fixtures. They beat a travelling Burnley side at home with a convincing 38 - 3 win but lost the next two away games. The first was to a Fleetwood side that had a number of changes in it’s ranks from the game earlier in the season, the two’s were narrowly beaten 17 - 7. The next was another close game against fellow promotion hopefuls BAE Warton, Thornton-Cleveleys put in a valiant performance but came away with a 13 - 7 loss. The 2nds sit in 3rd place of Division 5 North with 4 games left to play. The up and coming 3rd team haven’t played in a while due to a number of opposition sides pulling out of games but they have a friendly fixture away to the Village Spartans who hail from Sale. Good luck for the game guys! Games are played on Saturdays at Thornton YMCA and kick off at 3pm. Training is on Mondays and Wednesdays and starts at 6.45pm until 8.30pm. New and old players are always welcome whatever standard of Rugby they play so come on down if you fancy getting involved. Take a look at the website; www.thorntonrugby.com for more details and match information. If you’d prefer to be on the sidelines rather than on the pitch just pop down on a Saturday to watch some local competitive Rugby, the support is always appreciated. We hope to see you soon!

BLACKPOOL TO LONDON:

Cycle for Christie

Back in August 2011 Andrew Halliwell and Mark Kelly from Specsavers in Cleveleys cycled from Blackpool to London to raise money for the Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. In August this year Andrew and a small team of amateur cyclists are preparing to cycle again for the same cause. The team has grown in numbers, it was originally myself and my colleague from work going, well now my fiance’s brother, his friend and her future step dad have joined our team.

People can donate in a number of ways, they can visit Specsavers in Cleveleys, visit Chadwicks insurance on Waterloo Road or pop in the Yorkshire bank in Blackpool. You can also donate by texting BPLD51 £1,2,5,10,20 to 70070 or use your smart phone to scan the QR tag below. You can donate from as little as £1.

Please please help us reach our target!

We have decided to raise our target, which now stands at £2,500. We are still looking for as much sponsorship as we can get, both from the general public and from companies.

Paul Gailey ‘Diary of a local Councillor’ Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to. Sunday: I began the day with a terrific service at Anchorsholme Methodists, which I always enjoy and it’s something that sets me up for the week. In the afternoon, I prepared a report regarding the closure of the Lauderdale Tram Crossing. As many residents now know the crossing has been shut to vehicular traffic and is now simply a pedestrian crossing. It was upsetting for me to see the tarmac that had only been laid six months ago be ripped up and destroyed. Both Councillor Williams and I, along with many residents have worked so hard to stop the crossing from closing and seeing it closed and destroyed was a very painful moment. There is a lot of concern about the safety of the new pedestrian crossing that has been installed in the old crossings place and we are currently investigating this as we are convinced that any accident at this pedestrian crossing will see this crossing closed as well. In the evening, I put the final plans together for our second community garden (the first being the recently completed garden on the corner of Luton Road and Anchorsholme Lane East). I’m really pleased to announce that the second community garden will be in the Coastal Housing area at the back of Warren Drive at the end of Seabrook Drive. As a lot of residents in the area are elderly, this garden will have raised flower beds and new benches. The plan will be to establish a community gardening club to look after the new garden so residents meet and work together. Another community garden that is being established is at the back of St Teresa’s Church Hall, lots of raised flower beds have been installed and if anyone would like help out with running what will be a lovely garden for the area in the future please contact me on 01253 826679. Monday: Tonight I held the first meeting of the new ‘Friends of Anchorsholme Park’ group that I’m setting up. I was really impressed and touched that over 20 people took the time to attend even though the weather was very wet and miserable. The people who attended were so knowledgeable about the glory days of Anchorsholme Park and had so many wonderful ideas about how we can improve the park. It was fantastic to speak to everybody. I also want to thank Justine from Blackpool Council who came along. She did a fantastic job. If anyone would like to attend for meetings or knows someone who would, then please call me on: 01253826679 for more information. I know together we will turn this great park around. I’ll keep you posted in the months and years ahead on how we get on. Tuesday: In the evening we had our Friends of Eastpines Park meeting and as well as a waterfeature/wildlife area that we want to build we are also determined to buy new play equipment for the park. As such we are working with an organisation which will help us put together a bid for around £50,000 for new play equipment, as part of that bid we will be asking everyone in the area what sort of play equipment

they want. That process will happen over the next two months and we want to ask as many people as possible as part of the bid process to prove there is a need. There is no guarantee at this stage that we will get the money but I’m a big believer that if you don’t ask you don’t get. We are also looking to raise as much money ourselves and on Saturday April 7th between 12pm and 3pm at Eastpines Park we have our Easter Fair. We will have lots of stalls, a bouncy castle, donkey rides, children’s races and lots of competitions including one which will see the winner plant a monkey tree in the park. It’s a big event for us and if you could come and support it we would be really grateful with every penny raised being reinvested back into the park. Wednesday: What a busy day today was! In the morning I attended the bingo club at St Teresa’s, where I call out the bingo numbers. It’s great fun and always is a good laugh so if anyone would like to join the club; it’s held every Wednesday morning at 10am at St Teresa’s. In the afternoon I visited one of my favourite places in Anchorsholme – The Over 50’s Club held at Sevenoaks Community Centre. It’s run by Bob, Joyce and Dot, three great people who do so much for the community. Their club runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. In the evening I went to a meeting of BEAT (Blackpool Environmental Action Team. BEAT specialise in raising money for environmental projects in Blackpool. I put a bid in for some funds for 2000 Daffodil and Crocus bulbs for Eastpines and Anchorsholme Parks. The plan is we will have community planting days in both parks this autumn. I’m determined to involve as many people as possible with different projects in Anchorsholme as it both brings people together and gives everyone involved a lot of pleasure in making things happen. Thursday: Had a very successful meeting with Blackpool Council today about planting trees on the grass verges on Anchorsholme Lane and North Drive. As part of Blackpool Council’s recycling drive, the Council receive so many trees per year for each amount of waste they recycle, so the more trees they recyle the more trees we get to plant. As such Councillor Williams and myself have managed to secure a number of these trees which will be planted in Anchorsholme. The trees will be planted in the next few months and will come with protective grills to protect them from vandalism. This will just be the start of our long term tree planting programme for Anchorsholme and if you know of any areas in Anchorsholme you would like to see trees please do contact me. In the evening I attended the Residents Association at Sevenoaks Community Centre and was very touched by how welcome everyone made me feel. It was a pleasure to help with a few issues and I can’t wait until the next meeting to report back on what I’ve found out for everyone. Friday: In the morning I had a meeting with a resident about the poor state of the pavements in some areas and I’m very pleased to confirm that Denville Avenue, Glenarden Avenue and Springbrook Avenue will have their pavements fully relaid. In the afternoon I had a meeting with a good friend of mine Tom Gradwell who is a real community champion and has written some very good plays over the years. Tom is an inspiration to me in that he shows what one man can achieve. Tom has launched a new Choir for the area which everyone of all singing abilities is welcome to join. The new choir meets up on Tuesday nights at 7pm at St Teresa’s Church Hall and I’m sure over the years to come this Choir will be a huge success because what ever Tom is involved in is always enjoyable. Many thanks Paul Galley Councillor for Anchorsholme
