Thornton Cleveleys News

20mph Speed Limits 20mph speed limits are being introduced all over the UK, with parts of Wyre included in local plans In recent weeks, the local press has covered the news that most of Fleetwood is to be included in the new 20mph speed limit, and significant parts of residential Cleveleys and Thornton are also to be included. The new 20mph speed limit will be in place in residential areas and outside schools by 2013, and in Wyre is being delivered in four phases. Fleetwood and the Cleveleys streets listed in this article are part of phase two and other areas will be rolled out in the next three years. There is a pdf of a Lancashire County Council leaflet which has been delivered door to door and includes a general map of the areas included in each phase. A more detailed map of the proposed 20mph proposals will be available online when the consultation period begins. Information released by Lancashire County Council states: ‘There has been a growing demand in Lancashire to introduce 20mph speed limits to address road safety concerns. Lancashire County Council is committed to introducing 20mph speed limits as a response to

the road safety concerns of the public in all residential areas and outside all schools by 2013. The 20 mph speed limit schemes will be delivered in 4 phases across Lancashire. ‘Reducing speed in residential areas and outside schools will make the roads safer for everyone in the community and help encourage people to walk and cycle more and lead to more vibrant communities. We recognise that this will not happen overnight and we need to change the attitude and behaviour of drivers. We want to make driving over 20mph in a residential area socially unacceptable. ‘Recent guidance from the Government recommends that highway authorities introduce 20mph speed limits onto streets that are primarily residential in nature and do not form part of any major through route. The 20mph speed limit is indicated by speed limit signs where the speed changes and the presence of smaller, additional signs at regular intervals instead of traditional traffic calming measures. wanted to mark a very special day in a very special way. The children invited their parents and family to join in with our Remembrance Service assembly and to show their respect as a community. Each of the classes contributed to the assembly by showing and telling the congregation what they had learned about war, soldiers, poppies and the reason why we have Remembrance Day. Reception Class showed pictures of poppy fields that they had painted. The children learned why we buy poppies and that all the money collected goes to injured soldiers who have fought for their country. The children in Year Four have been learning all about evacuees, why they were evacuated, where

they went to and the kind of life they led. The children wrote recounts about the life of an evacuee and used chalks and silhouettes of aircraft dropping bombs over Britain to make some very emotive art work.

The Remembrance Service was a solemn and informative occasion, and was very poignant through the innocence and purity of the children sharing their knowledge of sacrifices and experiences of servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

(Year 4 children showing pictures of the Blitz)

Years Five and Six children shared some poetry they had written about the Holocaust; Year Three children re-enacted the Christmas Truce from the First World War and Years One and Two children sang a beautiful song about peace, whilst Tegan Hood also from Year Two performed a solo when she read a poem about Peace.

Postcard from Cleveleys

Postcard from Cleveleys Well November might be cooler Beach Road from 6pm – if you but the weather has certainly fancy a sing-along and a mince been drier than it was earlier in pie! the year! Which was good news for a school in Bolton who came on a field to learn about the sea defences, and also for a visit from our new Chief Executive Garry Payne who did his Cleveleys Ward walkabout this month. As with the others he’s doing all over Wyre, this is a chance to get to know exactly what happens in our communities. Rossall Beach Residents & Community Group held their first Sunday beach clean on 13 November which was a huge success with more to come, so watch this space! The group are holding their Christmas social event on 14 December at Cleveleys Community Centre on

November is also a time to remember our loved ones, with services on Remembrance Sunday at Cleveleys and Thornton Cenotaph, as elsewhere in the country. The Light up a Life event at the end of November is a happy celebration of the season, but another opportunity to remember those loved and lost through the Christmas Book of Memories at Cleveleys library.

ROBERTS & QUINN

The Wyre Together Showcase Event at Millfield School on 22 November was a fantastic way to get to know a lot of people, but there are many more groups doing wonderful things that everyone should know about. It’s that time of year again. The time when, families and friends, young and old get together. If you or a family member has a hearing loss, here are some useful tips that might just make a difference. • Sometimes hard-of-hearing persons have “good” or “better” sides -- right or left -- ask them if they do. If they indicate a preference, direct your remarks to the “good” side or face-to-face, as they wish. • Your speech will be more easily understood when you are not eating, chewing, smoking, etc.

• Speak in a normal fashion without shouting or showing impatience. See that the light is not shining into the eyes of the hard-of-hearing person. • A person with a hearing loss can also benefit from seating themselves at a table where they can best see all parties (e.g. from the *end* of a rectangular table).

Remember, with our advanced hearing solutions, excellent service and aftercare we can make sure you enjoy your Christmas this year, and many more to come. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our loyal customers, past and present.

• Reduce background noises when carrying on conversations -- turn off the radio or TV. • Recognize that hard-of-hearing people hear and understand less well when they are tired or ill • Do not talk to a hard-of-hearing person from another room. Be sure to get the attention of the person to whom you will speak before you start talking. 32

As a result, the school now has two halls available for usage outside school hours within the community, as part of the new ‘Community Outreach Programme’.

Norbreck Primary School Norbreck Primary School was originally built in 1934 and has educated children from the Norbreck ward and across Blackpool for over seventy years. Norbreck children have always received a first class education that has no doubt helped them throughout their educational journey and indeed life.

The halls are of varying size but are proving an excellent facility for activities like zumba and keep fit classes. There is a very minimal cost applied purely to cover overheads such as opening up, heating and lighting. If you would be interested to learn a little more of what is available at the school. Please contact the School Business Manager, David Brookes, on tel. (01253) 852219 or email david.brookes@norbreck.blackpool.sch.uk

Recently, Norbreck School has undergone something of a quite significant refurbishment and extension programme giving the school a more modern, fit-for-purpose feel. Norbreck Primary School, Norbreck Road, Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire FY5 1PD

Paul Gailey

‘Diary of a local Councillor’ Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

before and after pictures. We also got some pictures of the alleyway at the back of Kelso Avenue which was in a poor condition with weeds and was very over grown. I’m delighted to confirm we have got the Community Payback team to clear this alleyway. If anyone has an alleyway in Anchorsholme that they want cleaned up, let me know and I will try and get it added to the Community Payback team’s list. For those that don’t know Community Payback is a community service team and it’s the probation services way of trying to get offenders to payback for their crimes by improving their communities.

Tuesday: This morning I went to a meeting to discuss a serious issue a resident was having regarding anti social behaviour. It makes me very proud to be a voice for the residents, and it’s very rewarding to be able Friday: Helped deliver leaflets informing residents on to find solutions to their problems. In the afternoon Anchorsholme Lane East and West that their roads are Councillor Tony Williams and myself had a meeting with to be resurfaced and fully repaired. So far Councillor Tony Williams and myself have helped get Anchorsholme a company about running a golf tournament next year at Anchorsholme Park. I really hope this happens as Lane, St Georges and Redeswood Avenue fully everyone knows I have big plans for Anchorsholme park resurfaced. We have more roads targeted for repair and apart from planting new flowers and shrubs next year so we won’t stop lobbying until all the roads that need we want to have lots more organised sporting events work get it. In the evening I attended a Quiz Night at Anchorsholme Methodists which was held to raise funds there. This will help put Anchorsholme Park on the map and will hopefully get lots of local children involved in for their church roof. It was a fantastic, fun filled evening organised sporting events. We also will be developing and raised £500. golf and tennis coaching at the park, so this winter we will be busy organising everything. I will keep you posted on Saturday: I spent this morning with a resident who has had issues with the placement of a street light. One of the the developments of this exciting project. In the evening I things I enjoy about being a councillor is that I’m always chaired the monthly Friends of Eastpines Park meeting in which we discussed plans for the Christmas Fair. learning new things, some things big some small, for example with streets lights I found out recently that in Wednesday: I had nothing planned during the day so Blackpool all the streets lights start on the left hand side worked at my recruitment company. In the evening of the road as you enter it and finish on the right (check I attended the PACT (Police and Communities next time you are on any road in Blackpool and you will Together) meeting at Norbeck Castle Hotel. PACT has see what I mean). In the evening I had the pleasure of slightly changed, so there are now three meetings escorting the Mayor of Wyre David Bannister and his (Anchorsholme, Norbrek and Bispham) combined in one, wife to the evening performance of a play called ‘It’s but it was good to see that most of the attendees were A Cracker’ held at St Teresa’s. It was a fantastic play, from Anchorsholme. It shows again how much people and afterwards we had a wonderful hotpot. I’d like to thank everyone involved for a superb evening. If anyone think of their community, willing to go further afield to attend the monthly meeting. The next PACT meeting that gets the opportunity to go to a St Teresa’s Church hall will be in Anchorsholme will be on 4th January 2012 at production in the future, I would highly recommend it. The quality is as good as anything I’ve seen at the Grand. 7pm at Anchorsholme Primary School. Sunday: After church, a member of the friends of Eastpines Park Group helped me clean out our shed at Eastpines Park (yes it does have one, it’s just very well hidden). What started out as a small job became an all day job as we organised what we would be selling at our Christmas Fair. I know from experience that you can’t leave anything to chance with an event and that if you can organise what stock will go where on the day, it means the day is a lot easier. Other key to a good event is to get everyone who volunteers to enjoy themselves, so I’m planning a few treats for the volunteers on the day as a thank you for their hard work. Monday: In the day I popped down to see what was happening with the re-surfacing on St George’s Avenue and Redeswood Avenue. Both of these roads were in a poor condition so it was good to see the progress that is being made on both streets. We managed to get some photographs, so we now have some great

Thursday: Today was an extremely busy, but fantastic day. In the morning I attended Blackpool 6th Form College, along with a few other Blackpool councillors. The aim was to get younger people involved in politics and I was amazed by the enthusiasm and interest many young people had for politics. In the evening I attended a Finance and Audit meeting. I love being on this committee, it reviews Blackpool Council’s spending over each quarter and as someone who loves detail, I really enjoy asking questions about where the money is being spent and although I don’t have any control for where that money goes, when in the future I might have it’s good to know where it should go and how the system works.

Many thanks Paul Galley Councillor for Anchorsholme

Support “SandAid” and lets help them get to Number One for Christmas! Money raised goes to even experience the happiness and values of the festive season.

SandAid are a collective of amateur unsigned musicians who have recorded an original Christmas song, which is due for download release on the 5th December through iTunes and other leading download retailers. The song has been nearly 12 months in the planning, and was the brainchild of Rob Hulme and his wife AnneMarie Hulme who were fed up with the tradition of Christmas songs being ruined by the X Factor. Rob was involved in writing the song We’ve Still Got Christmas along with co-writers Ian Hooper and Jeff White, and we wanted to write a song which had a traditional feel, without being too cheesy, and incorporated many of the styles and talents of our fellow Blackpool bands. We live in uncertain times at the moment, and the lyrics try to establish that no matter what pain, suffering, hardship, or loss touches our every day lives, the one thing which remains constant, is how we try to celebrate Christmas, which we hope helps to consider our perspective of life and create opportunities for change. We are also donating 50p from every 79p sale to BBC Children in Need through sales over the entire Christmas period, as we feel that the song also has a meaning for disadvantaged children, some of which don’t

We decided to call the band ‘SandAid’ following on from the inspiration of Bob Geldof’s Band Aid. The song was recorded back in June at West Orange Studios near Preston, famous for recording the number one hit ‘Brimful of Asher’ by Cornershop, and is a mix of genres, which represent both the modern and traditional styles of music listened to today. Bobby Ball and Black Lace also kindly donated their time, and feature alongside the many amateur musicians and singers who represent a selection of the many talents which perform in the local bars and pubs in and around the Fylde coast area. There are also some up and coming singers involved, along with children from St Chads and Carr Head Schools, Poulton. It has been twenty one years since an original Christmas song reached the number one position in the music charts, and for that fact we would like to try and get the tradition of a true Christmas song into a pole position this year.

Our song is available to download from and other leading download retailers from December 5th Visit our website: www.sandaid.co.uk
