LINK FY6 12,000 COPIES

POULTON LE FYLDE MAGAZINE

NOVEMBER 2011 Editors Letter Welcome to our NOVEMBER edition of LINK-Magazine. Hope you had a great Halloween and attended an organised display on Bonfire Night especially if you supported your local event. November now brings us just over a month away from Christmas already how time passes.

LINK-Magazine is the only FREE magazine that delivers to all of FY6 and will always be free, I even put my face in it as we are confident and proud that we offer a good service and prepared to put my name on it as well and yes that’s me below. We got a compliment as we often do this month off Judith at First Class Learning thanking us for our professional service and taking care of her marketing without the jargon or pressure. We are working on our December and January editions now so don’t forget to send us your details for Christmas and New Year events, to let people know what going on in advance. LINK will get the message out where other media can’t. Congratulations LINK-Spotter Sandra Clark who won our ‘Where am I?’ Competition. £50 is on its way to you.

GET IT COVERED, GET IN LINK! Many Thanks

Local accents Most places have an accent, but I can’t remember anybody ever referring to a Poulton accent. When I was at secondary school I seem to recall that those who considered themselves to be a bit on the posh side pronounced the name of the town to rhyme with “oolton”, and the rest of us pronounced it to rhyme with “oleton”. Certain parts of Blackpool have a recognisable accent and Preston has one. But in the flat lands between Poulton-leFylde and the seething metropolis of Preston, accents vary from the urbane to the rural. In the depths of Transwyreania, where time does, indeed, seem to have stood still, or at least to be having a bit of a wait while it gets its breath back, those involved in agriculture have that bucolic twang that

you acquire when first you put on a pair of wellies. If you find yourself in a position where you actually do have to talk about mucking out, or mangold wurzels, the vocal chords adopt a strangulated position that renders urbane speech difficult: much the same thing happens with pirates. Most of the separate sounds that go to make up human speech are lost and what remains is a series of “Aaaarrrrghs”. This is why most underage drinkers from Poulton got their careers off to a flying start in the pubs over Wyre. They were often asked to drink up, and leave forthwith, but could never understand what was being said to them!

October’s Wildlife Saturday October the 1st was the warmest October day I have ever experienced in the UK. The Sunday that followed seemed like one of the wettest. Peculiar weather brought with it some weird phenomena, such as the snails I saw climbing in a gorse bush. Rather than check this phenomenon out on the internet, I decided to think about it analytically to see if I could come up with an answer. Snail shells are rich in calcium, perhaps these adventurous molluscs were looking for a source of calcium and possibly the spines on the gorse plants are stiffened by that element.

Snails and slugs are not most people’s favourite animals: gardeners loathe them and if you are ever unlucky enough to come into contact with the slime of a slug, you will find that it really takes some effort to get rid of it. The French and Spanish eat lots of snails, but we Brits have never really taken to them. Our thrushes, however, are enthusiastic consumers of snails and if you ever come across a little pile of smashed snail shells under a secluded bush, you can bet your bottom dollar that a thrush has been at work. They usually use a medium sized stone to smash the snails to pieces and extract the juicy bodies. These stones are known as thrush anvils. The thrushes that join us each winter from Scandinavia – fieldfares and redwings are already here, enlivening our parks and gardens with their bright colours and distinctive markings.

Markets are returning to Poulton too , with the first one held in the market square on 26th October. Discussion is ongoing about how to make this a weekly event and on what day it will be held, but it looks likely that a general market will be held in Poulton one day a week. Poulton le Fylde News

A Celebration of Carleton We have so much to celebrate here in Carleton this year. The small but very active Carleton Community Group has achieved a great deal. Not only is this group responsible for keeping the village blooming, it runs a Senior drop in centre which is growing by the month. Held at St Martins and St Hilda’s church hall on the last Monday of every month, (see dates below) it is an eclectic mix of information, fun and friendship. Over the year we have forged excellent links with Age UK and many other agencies. We are indebted to them for the time they give. All of this could not be possible without the generosity of the Churches allowing us to use the hall free of charge. Do pop in everyone is welcome. Dates for the drop in sessions as are;

31st October 1.30pm -3.30pm 28th November 1.30pm-3.30pm 19th of December (Note as this is our Christmas party we will start at 1pm as a light festive repast will be served accompanied by carols from the Carleton Community Chorus). Talking of Christmas, Carleton may be having their own large tree once again. This due to the generosity of Anchorsholme Car Sales giving up valuable car space. How fantastic. Look out for dates and times for our lighting up Carleton Christmas event. Carleton Community Group has worked hard throughout the year to try and keep the centre and its surroundings looking its best. Not an easy job with such a small group. If there is anything you think you could do to help please get in touch. We really do care about Carleton. Contact 882679 for any information.

Happy Birthday Carleton Community Chorus! The Carleton Community Chorus is celebrating their first birthday and they are thrilled that Bob Chilcott, a well known composer and choral conductor, is writing a song for them to celebrate their achievements this year. The choir goes from strength to strength with new members joining and more events to rehearse for. The last event in the Summer Term was the Carleton Proms in June, which also included performances from Jane Irwin, an International opera singer, as well as Diane Lee Carroll, the ‘Sing-Up’ children from the local primary schools and the Carleton Community Concert Band. Almost £5,000 was raised for the Blue Skies Hospitals Fund for much needed accommodation and resources for the new children’s wards at Victoria Hospital. If you think you might like to join the Carleton Community Chorus, just turn up to one of their practices at Carleton Green Community Primary School from 7pm until 8.15 pm on a Tuesday in term time and you’ll receive a warm welcome and have a great time. The choir is open to all adults in the local and wider community. Some of our members are talented singers and musicians, although you don’t have to be able to read music to join - other members had never sung outside the shower until they joined. The one thing that unites us more than anything else is a love of music. The Carleton Community Band rehearses on a Friday at the school too, from 4.30pm until 6.00pm. If you play an instrument and would like to join us, just come along and you will be welcome. They have an eclectic repertoire, singing a real variety of material, including classical, pop and show songs. The choir is led by Andy Brooke and accompanied by Brenda Bentley on the piano. The next event is on Thursday 10 November at Carleton St Hilda’s Church from 7.00pm, together with the Carleton Community Band. Jane Irwin will also be making a guest appearance. If you need any more information have a look at the website www.carletoncommunity music.org.uk or contact Tess Rowlands on 882679.

Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatments Non Surgical treatment has become increasingly popular for both women and men over the past decade. Indeed a troll through the internet can leave you confused and baffled as to which clinic to choose and what treatments to choose help improve your appearance. I have chosen the two commonest non surgical treatments offered by most clinics, that is, Botox and Dermal fillers.

Botox (anti-wrinkle injection) is mainly used to treat the upper face and improve expression lines on the forehead, brow and around the eyes. It works by relaxing the muscle in these areas, hence soften the lines formed over the years. With regular treatment lines can actually disappear. Indeed there are a number of different brands of anti-wrinkle injections but they all essentially work in the same way.

FY6 when contacting advertiser.

Mention LINK-

Dermal fillers on the other hand is generally

used to treat the lower part of the face especially lines around the nose, mouth, upper lip and chin areas. Dermal fillers are also used to give volume and shape to both upper and lower lips. There are also a huge range of branded fillers but the most well know is Restylane. Fillers are injected along the facial lines to help lift and smoothen their appearance. Essentially they replace the hyaluronic acid in the skin lost with age. Results can be very user dependent so make sure you choose a fully qualified practitioner. At SL Medical we take the time to understand and address our client’s needs and expectations before taking any decision to treat. That is why we offer all our clients a free no obligation consultation and provide expert advice on the range of treatments we offer. All treatments are performed by a fully qualified doctor. Visit our website at www.slmedical.co.uk for more information and testimonials from just a few of our clients.

It is the eighth year that the award-winning Fylde coast restaurant has held Michelin Bib Gourmand status and the fifth year it has been awarded 2AA Rosettes. Twelve is one of only two establishments in Lancashire to be awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which is increasingly becoming appreciated as diners seek out restaurants that offer good food and good value. It passed inspectors’ high standards to retain the award which recognises the provision of good food at moderate prices. The Michelin guide to the British Isles has been published early in October 2011 instead of January 2012 to bring it in line with the release dates of the other global publications.

LINK-Magazine Proud to Sponsor The Wyre Seagulls Ice Hockey Team Shaun Hartley representing LINK-Magazine pictured far left with the team

The Seagulls were formed in 1951 and played in the Midland Intermediate League from 1951 to 1955. In the 1955-56 seasons they lost just one match all year. In the 1960’s with no official leagues in the UK ‘non-league’ ice hockey continued with mini-tournaments competed for at the ice rinks of Blackpool. In 1982 they joined the newly formed British Hockey League (BHL) which has replaced the three top flight regional leagues in the United Kingdom, to form one top flight league. In 1982-83 they finished second.

Now twenty years after the disband, Simon Pearce (Head Coach) alongside old Seagull Gary Shearman, the Seagulls have been reborn with a new team in the brand new Sub Zero Arena in Cleveleys.

The Seagulls then joined the newly created second tier of the BHL, The British Hockey League Division One. In their first season in the First Division, 1983-84 they finished in sixth place out of eleven teams. The following season was more successful as the Seagulls finished in third place.

Martin Gardner the proprietor of MSG Media Ltd which runs LINK-Magazine said “It’s great that a successful local product like LINK-Magazine that supports local business with a cost effective advertising media and allows free publication of local events and charities is now also putting back into the local community by supporting grass roots sports”.

The 1986-87 seasons saw the Seagulls finish in the lower half of the Division One table, the 11th out of sixteen teams.

LINK-Magazine was asked by Adam Bradley who works at Wyre Building Supplies about sponsorship and as we already sponsor two local football teams Fleetwood Gym and Bispham Junior Football Federation, we thought why not sponsor on ice!

“We hope our success will rub off on the Wyre Seagulls and wish them great success for the coming year as we know what it’s like to have a great team In 1993, Ice Hockey came to an end in Blackpool after 42 years, because the rink at the Pleasure Beach together”. We are a true local business run by local people, helping the local economy and the local was considered too small to host competitive ice community at all levels” hockey. For a short while the Seagulls name was retained as the club and some of its players moved to SEAGULLS ICE HOCKEY IS BACK ON THE COAST!! the Blackburn Arena. But within a couple of years the Seagulls name was dropped completely.

Fleetwood Gym FC to raise money for Local Girls!!

increasingly difficult, such as hand-eye coordination. More recently, Leah has started having seizures during the night. And her once neat handwriting has deteriorated to the point where it is barely legible.

Preparations have now started to organise our annual New Year’s Day dip. We have organised this for over ten years now and help raise money for local causes. Last time we raised £1000 for Brian House children’s hospice in thanks for the work they have done with the sister of one of our player Summer Atkinson. This year Fleetwood gym has picked two local girls to raise money for and help out the families. The other local girl we wish to help is Molly Robinson. Leah Garfitt has Niemann-Pick disease, a genetic illness Eight-year-old Molly had rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare that causes memory loss similar to Alzheimer’s. But NPD type of malign cancer which affects connective tissues, does not stop there. It slowly takes away other bodily and is often found in the head or neck. capabilities, so sufferers regress in their development. It is so rare that just 500 people in the world are known to suffer from it. Those who have it rarely live past 20. Leah has to use her wheelchair to get about as her legs give way often. It stops her from doing things such as dancing or playing sports – activities her friends take for granted. Her ability to speak is also becoming more and more limited, to the extent that she is often unintelligible.

The treatment has to be done in America so the family have had to go there to get the treatment. This year we want to get as many taking part in the sponsored dip so we can raise much needed funds for both families. We now have the sponsor’s forms so if you would like to take part then contact Barry Whittaker on 07775928332. All money raised from this event will go to help both girls.

HAMBLETON W.I. “The Story of Liverpool” given by Mr MalcolmTranter, was the topic for our last meeting, stretching over 800 years with a population to start with of about 500 people, the same for Warrington and Wigan. It was little more than a creek when King John granted it a charter in 1100 and then the Earl of Derby decided to build a castle there. In 1317 at Birkenhead ‘across the water’ the monks built a priory for the ease of travellers from Ireland. In the 1400’s whilst the population rose there were various skirmishes with the War of the Roses, the 100 years war, in 1441 the Liverpool Castle was razed to the ground [There is a replica of this ruin at Rivington Pike if you fancy a day out]. In 1507 with only four ships they started trading with America then with 15 ships they traded with France and in 1641 with a rising population and bigger docks and waterways they were involved in the Triangular Slave Trade, i.e. taking woollen goods to Africa selling at a profit, then picking up slaves and then onto the West Indies where they were sold and cargoes of Sugar, rum and cotton were taken back to Liverpool and again they were sold at a profit. By 1715 industries were up and running, Salt refining, glass making, rope works for the ships, in 1755 canals were built transporting coal from the St. Helens and Wigan coalfields by 1806 the population had grown to 80,000 and the ships now numbered 8,000. Land was reclaimed from the sea, new dry docks and wet docks were built which eventually stretched over five miles long. This enabled Liverpool to

erect grand buildings and bonded warehouses which are still there today. In 1807 the Slave Trade was abolished and Liverpool still flourished. Then in 1845 at the height of the Irish Potato famine 300,000 immigrants arrived in Liverpool in transit to America bringing with them cholera and typhoid some 80,000 stayed swelling the local population and decimating quite a few. After this the sailing ships were replaced with Iron ships leading to the foundation of the Cunard Line, White Star Line and Liverpool became by the 1920s the capital of the world in Passenger Liners sailing to all the major ports of the world. Then came the Second World War and Liverpool was badly blitzed and never really recovered its world dominance as the new container ships required acres of land next to sea ports and this Liverpool could not provide. In 2008 Liverpool became a World Heritage Site and is now being revamped and rebuilt with grants, although it has not recovered its industrial might and there is a lot of unemployment, Liverpool is now looking to a brighter future. Friendships and relationships are highly favoured during November. Expansive Jupiter in Taurus expands your circle and could bring romance knocking on you door! Adventure and travel are in the spotlight after the 10th as dynamic Mars stirs up your restless side and you start to yearn for broader horizons.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 Make the most of energetic Mars in your sign until the 10th. You courage and self-confidence should have grown considerably during the last months and now you can put what you have learned into practice. Love and romance take on a new perspective this month as Venus shines her favourable light on you.

Neptune has returned to your sign for a few moths and this may mean that unfinished business has to be sorted out now. Groups, clubs and involvement with new networks are of particular interest and as Mars changes sign on the 11th you are drawn to working together with interesting new people.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22 With energetic Mars in your sign from the 11th this can turn out to be the month where you could achieve anything that you have set your heart on. Optimistic Jupiter in fellow earth sign Taurus also bestows a new aura of confidence and self-assurance and the 18th is particularly advantageous for success.

Wyre in Bloom HAMBLETON Best Kept Village We are now the proud recipients of the HAMBLETON SHIELD for being the Runners –Up in the Best Kept Large Village category, we actually donated this shield in 1997 which is the last time we were runners-up. Please contact me if you can help in anyway.

The judge’s only negative comment was LITTER PICKING – last Friday in each month that in general all the villages needed their Friday 25th November: 10.30am. We meet at the benches repainted, so come next spring Shovels Inn, everyone welcomed, picks and bags we hope to rectify that situation. We are planning our planting and colour scheme for the Wyre in Bloom competition bearing in mind it is 2012 Olympic Year and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee so extra work for us all, if anyone can spare some time and enthusiasm to help us it would be much appreciated.
