MILITARIA ANTIQUES - WHERE SO MANY ITEMS TELL A STORY All over the UK, in many auction houses, there is a Militaria section, where enthusiastic collectors compete to add to their collections. The items on offer are wide ranging, with such things swords used in ancient battles, muskets, rifles, bayonets and pistols, uniforms and badges, naval equipment and much more. However it is the medals that tell a story of amazing bravery, courage and sacrifices made by so many members of our armed forces, not only in the two great wars, but in other conflicts around the world and even now in Afghanistan. You only have to read the brief notes of lot 900, which sold in auction on the 3rd May 2012 – to see how three brothers gave their all for our country in the First World War – this being a wonderful story of how each of them, two in the Army and one in the Navy, who served so bravely along with so many others. There are many different collectables in Militaria - for instance, shown here the boxed Kreigsmarin Naval U-Boat Sextant from the 1939-45 Second World War and an Army Colt Revolver (de-activated of course!) and so on. It really is a most interesting collecting area and extremely popular in the UK. Citation reads: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for a long period of active service as battalion(s) medical oficers orderly, when with great bravery and skill he attended wounded under the most heavy shellfire and the worst conditions of mud, with absolute disregard for personal fatigue and safety.” For Gallentry in the field - next higher, the Victoria Cross. Postcard from Fleetwood The people of Fleetwood have been making it crack at the newly finished Marine Hall Gardens, kicking off 2012 with a great big party to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Fleetwood Town Council backed the event with a £10,000 donation, and the 175 team led by Margaret Lund organised the day, which started at lunchtime and went on until late. There was entertainment and fun all through the day, with singers and performers in the evening and the grand finale of the Beacon being lit by Mrs Lofthouse at precisely 10.26pm! The same weekend saw the RNLI Wreck Trek taking place, with over 1000 people making the journey out to the lighthouse in the Wyre estuary and raising funds for the RNLI.

July starts off with another RNLI fundraiser as the guys push their lifeboat on the 1st on its annual trip on dry land, and on 21st July they are at it again with the Lifeboat Fun Day. Fleetwood Museum are busy and hard at it, with guided walks around town and craft events for the little ones. Of course the big event on 15 July is the huge Tram Sunday – which transforms the whole of Fleetwood into one big outdoor party and entertainment

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB A NEW PARTNERSHIP Great news over the weekend as The Mount Racing Club landed a major coup by teaming up with Premiership footballers Wayne Rooney and John O Shea in their exciting 2year old colt Loki’s Strike. The deal which was set up by their trainer Karl Burke was finalised on Saturday morning and comes as a massive boost for the Fleetwood based club. Geoff Holden who runs the club with Andy Eaton said “we had a phone call from Karl last week to say that they had been up and were impressed by our horse and wanted to buy in. We obviously agreed and are now thrilled to bits to be in partnership with them. Another bonus is that because we are still the majority shareholders in him we get to keep the name and more importantly he will continue to run in our colours.” Loki’s Strike was set to run at Newcastle last Saturday night but was withdrawn due to rain softened ground and now the team are ploughing through the fixtures to find another suitable race for him. Geoff went on to say “there’s a common belief that Racehorse ownership is only for the rich and famous but it just goes to show that through the power of a syndicate anyone can get involved for a fraction of the cost.”

The boys have now sold out Loki’s Strike but are in talks with Team Burke to bring another horse into the club and set up another syndicate. They have planned a morning on the gallops in Middleham, N.Yorkshire with Karl and his team on Saturday 7th July and are inviting anybody who wants to get involved to come along and watch the horses being put through their paces and see behind the scenes of a working stable. Geoff and Andy are also pleased for their loyal owners as well who can now look forward to days out with their famous co owners. WILLIAM ROCKS SWIM WEEKEND 14 year old William Eccleston, from Fleetwood Swimming Club, created waves at the Blackpool Rocks open swimming competition recently at Palatine Pool when he achieved top places in eight events for his age group. William came up against swimmers from thirty five Lancashire clubs in the open meeting and secured three Gold medals in 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle. He also gained four Silver medals in 50m backstroke, 100m fly, 50m free and 200m individual medley together with a Bronze medal in 100m backstroke. William, a pupil at Arnold School is a talented all round athlete and has recently been selected for the Great Britain Pentathlon Squad. He will spend the summer holidays training hard towards competing in the European B Championships which take place in Poland on the 16th August. His friends at Fleetwood Swimming Club wish him every success in the forthcoming competition. Other Fleetwood swimmers who also enjoyed a very rewarding weekend in Blackpool were 13 year old Emma Wellard with three Gold medals in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and 12 year old Ciara Barcock with three Golds in 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m fly. Charlotte Grogan, 12, enjoyed gaining medals for backstroke, Gold for 200m, Silver for 100m and Bronze for the 50m race. Katie Lawson aged 15 years came away with a Bronze medal in 400m freestyle and little Lily Evans, 9, gained a Gold medal in 50m free. Fleetwood Museum News What a splendid occasion the Marine Gardens Jubilee Party turned out to be. It was certainly an opportunity for Museum volunteers to meet the many visitors and to raise funds for future Museum projects. In recent weeks several local residents have visited the museum with items for donation and also unique photographs which we have been able to copy and place in our records. We take pride in being a community museum and are well supported by the unique community spirit in Fleetwood. A number of social events are planned for July, the first being a heritage walk on Thursday July 5th. The walk, leaving the Museum entrance at 13.30, will be on the theme of The Growth of Fleetwood as a holiday resort. On July 15th 1840, the town became the first seaside town in the World to be linked to the railway system. Since then Fleetwood has seen many fluctuations in its holiday trade. Key events were undoubtedly the opening of Fleetwood Pier, the development of the foreshore lakes, baths and gardens and Marine Hall and the loss of the lucrative Isle of Man steamer service. More controversial were the seafront miniature railway, Fleetwood Zoo and Toyland-the childrens amusement park. Fond memories of Bilton’s Marionettes and Corrigan’s are still fresh in the
On Thursday July 12th, well known local speaker, Jill Marr, will give a talk at the Museum entitled,’The Titanic’. This year has seen the 100th anniversary of the loss of the magnificent liner and Fleetwood had links with the launching of the ship. The talk starts at 14.00 in the upstairs education room. Admission is free and all are welcome. Another major event this year is the 400th anniversary of the Lancashire Witches Trial and to mark the notable event the Friends of Fleetwood Museum are organising a day coach excursion to the Pendle area on Monday 17th September followed by a drive along the route taken by the unfortunate accused on their way to trial and execution at Lancaster. We will be visiting some of their home villages in the Pendle area and then on to Lancaster for the major exhibition about this fascinating piece of history. There will be time to browse in the city or take a short heritage walk relating to the witches trial. We will be travelling through some of Lancashire’s finest scenery and a limited number of tickets are available from the museum priced at £13.50. For information ring the museum on 876621.
