ON REC Children like getting messy IPES in the kitchen, but there’s more to us than chocolate rice crispy cakes! Children who take part in the Kiddy Cook kitchen don’t just get to make a cake, they get to conduct a ‘volcano’ experiment to learn how carbon dioxide works to make their cakes and biscuits rise. They learn the difference between taste and flavour and think about the effect sound has on their ability to eat.

Have you ever wanted to be a rock star? Well, everyone who comes to Rock-Jam Music Schools to learn electric guitar, drums, bass, or keyboards also gets the experience of playing in a real, live rock band, at the same time as learning their instrument in a unique and enjoyable way. Gary Heyes, who owns the schools in Cleveleys, St. Annes, Lancaster, and Preston says: “This is by far the most enjoyable way of learning an instrument. For children, often the problem is keeping them motivated so that they practice and improve. Here at Rock-Jam our students are taught by young tutors on a 2:1 basis, and get to play with other budding musicians in a rock band environment every week as part of their lesson. This really keeps them motivated!” Come along and have a
FREE hour-long taster lesson to try us out.

MAY 2012
Hello and welcome to the May edition of LINK-Magazine. Here at LINK Towers we hope you’re all enjoying the first signs of summer. We can’t wait to get the gazebo out, BBQ fired up and the beer cooled; so let’s all keep our fingers crossed for some great weather across the Fylde Coast! Some of you may be taking advantage of the new warmth outside to finally get all those jobs done around the house. The good news is we have plenty of tradesmen inside this issue to help you do just that. Every man’s home is his castle, and there are a few knights in shining armour inside that can slay the DIY demons, and help you get your home sorted in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 5 June. A once-in-a-year opportunity is nearly upon us too – the chance to safely walk out to the historic Wyre Light at Fleetwood. Join in the Wreck Trek 2012 on Saturday 2 June at 3pm, in aid of the RNLI; a great cause I’m sure you will agree. We’ve had over 500 entries to WIN TWO FREE tickets to watch McFly and The Wanted at Blackpool’s Festival Headline event. The winner for our FY7 edition was Rebecca Pilkington. Congratulations to the winners of last month’s competitions. John Wright won our Where Am I? Competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you! Also, Martyn Smith won the James Jackson WIN Your MOT draw. A pat on the back to you both! Don’t forget, LINK-Magazine also offers competitive leaflet print and distribution for up to 96,000 homes and businesses across the Fylde Coast, as well as offering FREE What’s On listings for most local events. With a regular monthly magazine with over 19 pages of content this month we are much more than just an ad mag. LINK-Magazine is your local community & business directory.

LOCAL ART EXHIBITION TAKES OFF AT GERRARDS
GALLERY CAFÉ
Competition by Harvey Foster Oil on Canvas
Last month Gerrards launched their newly opened, “GALLERY CAFÉ” and local artists were invited to exhibit their work free of charge, with a nominal commission whenever an item was sold. The response has been excellent, with various artists from all over the Fylde area, bringing their paintings and art work to be displayed on the café walls. There is a wide range of styles, techniques and subject matter, that makes this a most interesting collection of local art. We are now looking forward to having more artists bringing their work for display.

Fleewood News
What’s happening in Fleetwood? At last, April sees the unveiling of the brand new Visit Fleetwood website! It’s linked to Visit Cleveleys and Poulton, plus five new other sites for across the coast, so if you like Fleetwood then you need to have a look and keep watching – for all the latest! There are lots of exciting things happening all over Fleetwood, not least of all with the return of the trams at the launch event on 3rd April and Fleetwood Towns promotion to the Football League, decided by their draw with Wrexham. At Rossall Point the steelwork has started to go up and you can see from the shape that the new lookout tower is going to be an impressive landmark. If you look at the new website you’ll see photos and a sneak preview inside the new Health and Wellbeing Centre on the Dock. Wow, that’s an impressive facility and will make health care much better for everyone in the area.

A total of 16 teams took part to raise money for the Blackpool Victoria Cardiac Unit. A total of £2800 was pledged, which given the hard times many people are facing was a super amount. and are experienced leisure time divers who are well aware of the vital service the RNLI provides for mariners. In fact they like life afloat so much they live on a houseboat moored near Ormskirk and spend their leisure time cruising Lancashire’s canal network when work commitments permit.
Masons who belong to Anchorsholme Lodge which meets at West Drive, Cleveleys, Masonic Hall have raised funds to help the RNLI and Fleetwood lifeboat in particular.
Earlier this year the Boyntons attended the service of unveiling the memorial dedicated to the men who were lost in the Morecambe Bay helicopter tragedy. Steve Potton who piloted the downed helicopter was a fellow Mason who attended a Fleetwood lodge. The memorial also pays tribute to the bravery of the Fleetwood lifeboat men who were involved on that fatal night which prompted Cliff to choose the RNLI to support.
The immediate past master of the lodge Cliff Boynton and his wife Joyce made the trip to Fleetwood lifeboat station to hand over a cheque for £300. The donation to the lifeboat formed part of a total package of £900 worth of financial assistance for local good causes chosen by Cliff to mark his year in office, with the other beneficiaries being Donna’s Dream House in Blackpool and Brian House Children’s Hospice. Funding came from social events held by the lodge.
Paul and Roy thanked Cliff and Joyce for Anchorsholme Lodge’s donation and assured them that it would be put to very good use.
Cliff and Joyce made a whistle stop tour of his chosen local charities finishing their trip at Fleetwood. There they were met by Paul Ashworth coxswain of Fleetwood lifeboat and RNLI treasurer Roy Lyons who gave the couple a tour round the station’s facilities and they saw and heard about the lifeboats which operate from Fleetwood.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN MAY This month brings us Pentecost, when tongues of flame descended on the Disciples and they could speak to everyone, in any language, and be readily understood, and they were directed to take the Good News of Jesus throughout the world. Following last month’s article in the LINK magazine, there has been a superb response from a wide variety of community groups to “get involved” with the planned celebration day in and around The Marine Gardens on Monday 4th June 2012 from noon to 10.30pm’ish. This is an ideal opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate HM the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and have a memorable day of free Fun and Celebration. We’ve even arranged for wall-to-wall sunshine! After all, this will be Fleetwood at it’s best. With the sunshine comes an opportunity for a lovely picnic; so everyone is encouraged to bring along their packed lunches and picnic baskets. Make a day of it! Fleetwood Town Council and members of the organising group have been encouraged by the interest shown by a wide range of community and voluntary organisations keen to be a part of what promises to be a very special date in the Fleetwood 2012 calendar. The Jubilee will also be special for every Fleetwood infant and primary school pupil who will receive a commemorative Jubilee Mug at school, kindly funded by the Town Council to mark this wonderful occasion.
There will be free rides for children and the ever-popular Bouncy Castle to work off all that energy! The schools in Fleetwood are all pulling together to organise a parade of ‘Jubilee Queens & Retinues’, and after a busy afternoon of activities to suit everyone, the evening will culminate in a Firework Display and the lighting of The Jubilee Beacon on The Mount. Our Fleetwood beacon will be one of hundreds to be lit at a prearranged time along the length and breadth of the UK to honour our Queen and bring to a close a Bank Holiday weekend of celebrations. We are still keen to hear from you if you want to be a part of our special day? With this in mind please contact Gordon Oates (876066) or Pat Bee (779137), who are members of the Steering Group happy to help and advise as the plans take shape.
There will be stalls, events and attractions for all ages, with demonstrations and performances from local bands, as well as a Fancy Dress and Fleetwood’s Got Talent segment on the new outside performance area.
It’s never too late to get involved, and remember… ”Be there. The Diamond Jubilee Rocks!” 29

Masons help Tommy’s youth club boxer Jane Couch, the ‘Fleetwood Assassin’, who Masons from the Fylde made a visit to Fleetwood to local youth club Tommy’s to see the extremely good use that the club was making of a laptop computer supplied by the Mark Masons’ Charities Fund. Local Mason Jimmy Rogers made a request for funding from the Mark Charities Fund for Tommy’s when he received a request from the club that they were in dire need of a laptop computer to help the youngsters who meet at the club with their activities. Jimmy is well aware of the valuable work the trustees of Tommy’s do within the club for local youngsters and its aims and objectives.
trained under Tommy Norton MBE after whom the club is named, went on to gain fame worldwide. One of the uses the laptop is put is to visually record the young boxers in action and the playback helps them develop their skills. Tommy Norton, youth worker Jed Sullivan and Stewart Walker, chair of the trustees of Tommy’s were on hand to explain to their visitors many of the activities and the development of social skills which take place within the club, at away trips to other centres and by the club’s interaction with Fleetwood schools.
Jimmy felt that it was a project worth supporting and the Mark Mason’s Charity agreed by providing the £330 required for the laptop. Tommy’s, or Fleetwood Club for Young People, provides a safe haven for Fleetwood youngsters to take part in a whole variety of activities ranging from sport to dance, pool to cooking, movie-making to beauty classes; all under the supervision of well trained staff and volunteers who guide them towards responsible citizenship. One of the activities for which the club, founded as Fleetwood Gym in 1894, is renowned is boxing. Young boxers who have trained at the club have gone on to make their mark in the sport or have simply learned the disciplines required. Female

Help Kai Walk Appeal gains charity backing Media Enquiries: 01782 600867 or email rebecca.oconnor@caudwellchildren.com
A fundraising appeal to get a 3-year-old from Fleetwood life-changing Cerebral Palsy treatment in America received a boost this week when it was announced that national charity, Caudwell Children, had come on board to support their fundraising. Like most boys his age Kai has a dream, but unlike other boys Kai’s dream is to be able to run around and play with his brothers and sisters. To most 3-yearolds this would be achievable but Kai’s short life has been blighted by the painful effects of Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, which causes tightness and pains in his legs leaving him unable to walk unaided.
Kai and his mum Caron
But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for Kai as a treatment called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which involves cutting some of the sensory nerve fibres that come from the muscles and enter the spinal cord, is available. This procedure combined with intensive post-operative physiotherapy will allow Kai to take the first steps he has dreamed of. Kai will undergo the operation at St Louis Hospital, Missouri and so the family are now on a mission to raise the £58,000 needed for the treatment and Caudwell Children have joined the campaign to help and support them. Kai’s mum Caron said: “We desperately need to raise this money so that Kai can gain the independence that he craves. As a mother I would love to be able to see all my children running and playing outside together, but without this operation this may never happen.” “We know that raising £58,000 is going to take a lot of hard work and dedication but, like any parents we will do whatever we can to help our son and really hope that people will support us in raising the funds needed to allow him to have the life he dreams of.” “Having the support of Caudwell Children takes a weight off my mind as they will manage the money and organise everything on my behalf when the time comes for Kai to go to America.” Helping Kai’s family raise the money for the operation are national charity, Caudwell Children, who support families caring for sick and disabled children. Caudwell Children CEO, Trudi Beswick, commented: “Over the last two years we have helped over 20 families fundraising to get this truly life-changing treatment for their children. We really believe in the difference the SDR treatment can make to a child’s life and want to help in any way we can to get Kai over to St Louis.” With over 12 years experience in fundraising, the Charity hope to support Kai’s family by helping with marketing events and using their contacts to approach local Foundations.
Anyone interested in supporting the Help Kai Walk Appeal is asked to contact Caudwell Children on 01782 600867 or to donate online visit www.justgiving.com/helpkaiwalk

Willow Garden Project
Tel: 07807 743800 (Pamela Laird) Tel: 07580 001434 (Paula Ireland) The money raised from the sponsored walk back in February has enabled us to get the footings and the concrete base in place as well as the shuttering for the paths donated by PH Timbers LTD.
The fundraising day on Easter Monday was a great success, we had a great response from the public on the day, despite the wet weather we raised just over £700! We would like to thank the Stewards Ian and Karen at FCC for all their help and support along with Lancashire adult learning Tutors Donna and Liz who put on nail art and flower arranging at no cost which the children enjoyed as well as the bouncy castle that king of the bouncing castles donated, it was great to have the support from local people they were all amazing. We have been granted £500 from the Green Partnership Award LCC for tools and equipment along with the professional support from the environmental projects officer LCC Julie Paton who has visited the site and thinks its great! Julie has organized a professional designer to work with us on the willow garden project.
Kai's new legs appeal and Fleetwood food bank. Asda have a community conference room that we and others in the community can use for meetings etc they have also expressed their keen interest in supporting us on the project with volunteers. Blackpool CVS are going to help us set up a website in the near future then the public can follow the projects development. We all get so excited when another stage gets completed it makes all our efforts worth while. We are just waiting to hear from the lottery funding to see if we've been successful with our application so we can go ahead with the log cabin. We welcome volunteers and any donations of aromatic plants and soft fruit bushes would be a great help.
Kind Regards Paula and Pamela
Global Renewable Recycling plant donated 7 tonnes of compost for the raised beds how fantastic is that! Hesketh Press Printers and Colour Banners are continuing to sponsor the project through promotional material they have both been really supportive. For Garage Doors with a 10 year guarantee it’s as easy as ABC.
Fleetwood Museum News Fleetwood Museum re-opened as scheduled on April 3rd. Weeks of work by dozens of volunteers saw the building looking its best but with some gallery displays only being completed an hour before opening! Early visitors have already commented about the newly displayed showcases in the Deep Sea Fishing and Fleetwood Docks galleries and the excellent work done on the large scale model of the docks. It is hard to believe that this summer will mark the 30th anniversary of the last Fleetwood based deep sea trawler to land a catch in the port. When Jacinta landed a catch in the Fish Dock in July 1982, few local residents thought it would mark the end of an era. Fortunately Jacinta is back with us as a heritage trawler and available for public inspection in the Fish Dock. Fleetwood is lucky to have its great deep sea fishing days on display in Fleetwood Museum and on Jacinta. Another part of our fishing heritage is the Victorian Fishing Smack, Harriet, built in the Singleton Yard alongside the lock pits in Fleetwood in 1893. Until 1975 this much loved vessel continued to fish out of Fleetwood before she spent more than 20 years as a recreation and holiday center at Millom. Since her return to Fleetwood in August 1998, she has been stored at the Museum and for the past three years has formed the centrepiece of a fishing and dockland display. For the 2012 season Harriet and surrounding displays will be on display daily at 12noon . Guides, including a number of ex fishermen will be available to take visitors to the historic vessel. Later in the summer we will be adding to the displays in the Harriet hall ,adding information panels on ship and boatbuilding in Fleetwood and on William Stoba, the renowned designer and foreman builder who worked for Gibson’s, Liver and Wilding and eventually Armours. Thursday May 10th will see the latest in the series of museum afternoon talks, when Ted Lightbown will speak about the Development of the Blackpool Winter Gardens at 2pm. The talk will be superbly illustrated with pictures from the excellent personal collection of the speaker who is also the honorary archivist for the Winter Gardens. The Museum Friends will hold their monthly Coffee Morning on Wednesday 30th May starting at 10.30am. Childrens Craft sessions will be held during Whitsun half term and bookings can be made on 876621. Fleetwood Jokes & Comments Sent In
A bloke starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks. First is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. As he does this a huge fish jumps out and bites him. To show who is boss, he beats it to death with a spade. Realising his employer won’t be best pleased he disposes of the fish by feeding it to the lions, as lions will eat anything. Moving on to the second job of clearing out the Chimp house, he is attacked by the chimps who pelt him with coconuts. He swipes at two chimps with a spade killing them both.. What can he do? Feed them to the lions, he says to himself, because lions eat anything..
I don’t think you understand. Does either of you have a real grudge? No, we have carport, and not need one. I mean what are your relations like? All my relations still in Poland . Is there any infidelity in your marriage? We have hi-fidelity stereo and DVD player. Does your wife beat you up? No, I always up before her. Why do you want this divorce? She going to kill me. What makes you think that? I got proof. What kind of proof? She going to poison me. She buy a bottle at drugstore and put on shelf in bathroom. I can read English pretty good, and it say: ~~~Polish Remover~~~ ................................................................................
He hurls the corpses into the lion enclosure.
EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOU?
He moves on to the last job which is to collect honey from the South American Bees.. As soon as he starts he is attacked by the bees. He grabs the spade and smashes the bees to a pulp. By now he knows what to do and shovels them into the lions cage because lions eat anything.
As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of the world, I rapidly realized that I don’t really give a hoot. It’s the tortoise life for me!
Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo. He wanders up to another Lion and says “What’s the food like here?”
2. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.
1. If walking/cycling is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.
3. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years. The lions say: “Absolutely brilliant, today we had Fish & Chimps with Mushy Bees”.
4. A tortoise doesn’t run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.
................................................................................ The Polish Divorce And you tell me to exercise?? I don’t think so. A Polish man moved to the USA and married an American girl. Although his English was far from perfect, they got along very well. One day he rushed into a lawyer’s office and asked him if he could arrange a divorce for him. The lawyer said that getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances, and asked him the following questions:
I’m retired. Go around me!
Have you any grounds? Yes, an acre and half and nice little home. No, I mean what is the foundation of this case? It made of concrete.

Hello Following on from the massive crackdown on drug dealing within Fleetwood in February, known as Operation Nimrod, the first of the court cases are starting to be heard. Sarah McKinstry appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the offences. She has been jailed for 2 years and 8 months. Detective Chief Inspector Vicki Evans, Lancashire Constabulary, said: “We are committed to taking class A drugs off our streets. Most burglaries, car crime and robberies are carried out to fund a drug habit and this brings misery to the lives of law abiding residents.

They are Daisy Elliot class 3C, Abby-Rose Clarke class 4S, both from Larkholme Primary School and Morgan Murray class 6W at Shakespeare School. They are currently selecting their bikes and safety wear from our local bike shop. PC Ian Lester said “The kids from all primary schools in Fleetwood produced some high class posters to help get the message across. “We “Operation Nimrod is an will use the three winning posters intelligence-led operation that as part of a campaign to help targets drug crime across the promote road safety and crime force and in this instance has prevention advice over the coming involved months of evidence 12 months.” Well done to you all gathering on alleged drug dealing – look out for your posters about in and around Fleetwood.” town!!
