FLEETWOOD MAGAZINE

NOVEMBER 2011 Editors Letter Welcome to our NOVEMBER edition of LINK-Magazine. Hope you had a great Halloween and attended an organised display on Bonfire Night especially if you supported your local event. November now brings us just over a month away from Christmas already how time passes. LINK-Magazine is the only FREE magazine that delivers to all of FY7 and will always be free, I even put my face in it as we are confident and proud that we offer a good service and prepared to put my name on it as well and yes that’s me below. We got a compliment as we often do this month off Judith at First Class Learning thanking us for our professional service and taking care of her marketing without the jargon or pressure. In response to our FY7 Youth in October edition Belinda Armstrong club leader 1st Fleetwood Scouts said, “Thanks for your advert we are now nearly full just a couple places left, now we need more helpers” be nice to hear back from other groups in FY7. Congratulations LINK-Spotter Sandra Clark who won our ‘Where am I?’ Competition. £50 is on its way to you. Mrs Spur for her free MOT and Mr Smith for winning free petrol at James Jackson Garage.

GET IT COVERED, GET IN LINK! Many Thanks

James Jackson’s

CENTRAL GARAGE LTD James started his career in the RAF, where he trained as a motor mechanic. On leaving the RAF, he bought his first garage on Station Road in Poulton in 1993. He steadily built up his business and then expanded into larger premises, when he moved to Fleetwood in 2002 by buying Central Garage on Albany Road. He has built a team of thirteen dedicated people offering a high standard of customer care from the moment you arrive through to delivery of your vehicle. They offer a wide range of services including MOT testing (class 4, 7 and motorbikes), fixed-price servicing, diagnostics, computerised wheel alignment & tyres, air-conditioning checks, batteries, etc. They also offer free courtesy cars, and even have a courtesy van for commercial customers! James has a simple philosophy, “We take good care of each and every customer that comes our way”. This ideal runs right through the company where there is a strong emphasis on customer care. Lesley and Debbie are on hand to take your call with access to highly trained mechanics, the team can assist and advise you every step of the way. All prices at the garage are fully inclusive, with no hidden extras. James working practice is to be honest and reliable at all times. James said “We describe all work required in simple terms, no jargon. We always look for the best and most cost-effective solution to meet your repair needs. We never start work until the job has been quoted and approved by the customer”.

James Jackson’s Central Garage Albany Road, Fleetwood Telephone: 01253 873710

Need tyres? They have a large range of tyres in stock to cater for all makes, models and to meet all budgets. James has also invested in a ‘Nitrogen Tyre Inflation’ machine which is guaranteed to increase the efficiency of your vehicle and reduce your fuel consumption. James said “At Central Garage, we are always looking for products and services that we can offer our customers to help reduce the cost of their motoring”. The Nitrogen Tyre Inflation machine is just one such way in which a little investment from the customer can prove long term benefits. James Jackson’s Central Garage is one of the only local garages where you can still have your car filled up by an attendant! James explained “We recognise that some of our customers find it difficult to fill the car themselves and like our ‘old-fashioned’ approach to fuelling cars. That is why we offer this service”. James said “I’ve been in business now for 18 years with many customers that have been with me right from the start. But I like to think that although we’ve expanded, we are large enough to cope but small enough to care”. James and his family now live in Thornton Cleveleys, where both his wife and himself were brought up. James spends much of his spare time in Fleetwood though, where on a Saturday afternoon you’ll find him at Highbury stadium cheering on Fleetwood Town FC along with the Cody Army. James Jackson’s Central Garage is situated just a stone’s throw from the ground down Albany Road, just off Poulton Road. James and his team would like to thank all their customers both old and new for their continued support, and look forward to seeing you soon.

LINK-Magazine Proud to Sponsor The Wyre Seagulls Ice Hockey Team Shaun Hartley representing LINK-Magazine pictured far left with the team

The Seagulls were formed in 1951 and played in the Midland Intermediate League from 1951 to 1955. In the 1955-56 seasons they lost just one match all year. In the 1960’s with no official leagues in the UK ‘non-league’ ice hockey continued with mini-tournaments competed for at the ice rinks of Blackpool. In 1982 they joined the newly formed British Hockey League (BHL) which has replaced the three top flight regional leagues in the United Kingdom, to form one top flight league. In 1982-83 they finished second.

Now twenty years after the disband, Simon Pearce (Head Coach) alongside old Seagull Gary Shearman, the Seagulls have been reborn with a new team in the brand new Sub Zero Arena in Cleveleys.

The Seagulls then joined the newly created second tier of the BHL, The British Hockey League Division One. In their first season in the First Division, 1983-84 they finished in sixth place out of eleven teams. The following season was more successful as the Seagulls finished in third place.

Martin Gardner the proprietor of MSG Media Ltd which runs LINK-Magazine said “It’s great that a successful local product like LINK-Magazine that supports local business with a cost effective advertising media and allows free publication of local events and charities is now also putting back into the local community by supporting grass roots sports”.

The 1986-87 seasons saw the Seagulls finish in the lower half of the Division One table, the 11th out of sixteen teams.

LINK-Magazine was asked by Adam Bradley who works at Wyre Building Supplies about sponsorship and as we already sponsor two local football teams Fleetwood Gym and Bispham Junior Football Federation, we thought why not sponsor on ice!

“We hope our success will rub off on the Wyre Seagulls and wish them great success for the coming year as we know what it’s like to have a great team In 1993, Ice Hockey came to an end in Blackpool after 42 years, because the rink at the Pleasure Beach together”. We are a true local business run by local people, helping the local economy and the local was considered too small to host competitive ice community at all levels” hockey. For a short while the Seagulls name was retained as the club and some of its players moved to SEAGULLS ICE HOCKEY IS BACK ON THE COAST!! the Blackburn Arena. But within a couple of years the Seagulls name was dropped completely.

Fleetwood Gym News

Fleetwood Gym FC to raise money for Local Girls!!

increasingly difficult, such as hand-eye coordination. More recently, Leah has started having seizures during the night. And her once neat handwriting has deteriorated to the point where it is barely legible.

Preparations have now started to organise our annual New Year’s Day dip. We have organised this for over ten years now and help raise money for local causes. Last time we raised £1000 for Brian House children’s hospice in thanks for the work they have done with the sister of one of our player Summer Atkinson. This year Fleetwood gym has picked two local girls to raise money for and help out the families. The other local girl we wish to help is Molly Robinson. Leah Garfitt has Niemann-Pick disease, a genetic illness Eight-year-old Molly had rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare that causes memory loss similar to Alzheimer’s. But NPD type of malign cancer which affects connective tissues, does not stop there. It slowly takes away other bodily and is often found in the head or neck. capabilities, so sufferers regress in their development. It is so rare that just 500 people in the world are known to suffer from it. Those who have it rarely live past 20. Leah has to use her wheelchair to get about as her legs give way often. It stops her from doing things such as dancing or playing sports – activities her friends take for granted. Her ability to speak is also becoming more and more limited, to the extent that she is often unintelligible.

The treatment has to be done in America so the family have had to go there to get the treatment. This year we want to get as many taking part in the sponsored dip so we can raise much needed funds for both families. We now have the sponsor’s forms so if you would like to take part then contact Barry Whittaker on 07775928332. All money raised from this event will go to help both girls.

The regular trips to see her specialist in hospital highlight her limitations with tests she finds

This year will be the best year yet – come along and support this annual fund raising event! Each year The Marine Hall in Fleetwood plays host to the Fleetwoodstock Music Festival. So far over £12,000 has been raised for charities, good causes and community projects. Now in its 7th year, Fleetwoodstock Music Festival has enabled local musicians to perform ‘on the big stage’ and rub shoulders with established musicians and artists from around the UK. As each festival has come and gone different ways of formatting the weekend have been tried. The winning formula has evolved into: - Friday 4th November (evening) - A blues night headlined by Matt Schofield. British Bluesman Matt Schofield is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and innovative guitarists to have emerged on the world scene for several generations. He is rated in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time (Guitar & Bass Magazine) putting him in the company of such iconic names as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. Tickets £12 plus support bands. - Saturday 5th November (evening) is time for international rock bands to take the stage. This year we see the return of the immensely popular melodic rock band Ten. This is currently their only 2011 UK performance. Gary Hughes,

Your Monthly Horoscope ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 November is an exciting month for Aries, Venus and Mercury are in optimistic Sagittarius and they both illuminate the sector of your chart concerned with further education, adventure and travel. On the 11th, dynamic Mars moves into hard working Virgo and brings a new perspective to your plans. TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Money and finances are the focus of the month for Taureans. Always concerned with resources, this month brings new energy and a fresh perspective on all things to do with funds and assets. As dynamic Mars moves to the most creative part of your chart new ideas and plans start to emerge. GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Relationships and partnerships are the main focus for Gemini this month. Romantic Venus and your ruler Mercury are both in freedom loving Sagittarius. This could heighten your need for independence and free expression; any claustrophobic or restrictive relationships will have to be examined now.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23 Task master Saturn is still advancing through your sign and demands that you seek a better balance in all areas of your life. Communication is highly favoured this month and you’ll find an entirely new way of getting your message across. Do it in diplomatic Libran style and you are sure to succeed.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22 It is your birthday month and the focus is on finances and new ways of bringing in extra income. This is a good month to let innovative plans and ideas take shape, as you should feel energetic enough to dispose of old habits that hold you back. Partnerships are also favoured with optimistic Jupiter in Taurus.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 21 Communicative Mercury and romantic Venus are both in your sign this month; you should feel at the top of your game. Your ruler, the optimistic and expansive Jupiter, favours the work sector of your chart. New prospects could arrive now, particularly after the 10th as energetic Mars reaches dynamic new heights.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 November brings your work and career zone into the spotlight. The planetary emphasis is in freedom loving Sagittarius, you are asked to review all those areas where you feel restricted and unappreciated. After the 10th, dynamic Mars in diligent Virgo assists with communication and enables you to get what you desire.

Friendships and relationships are highly favoured during November. Expansive Jupiter in Taurus expands your circle and could bring romance knocking on you door! Adventure and travel are in the spotlight after the 10th as dynamic Mars stirs up your restless side and you start to yearn for broader horizons.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 Make the most of energetic Mars in your sign until the 10th. You courage and self-confidence should have grown considerably during the last months and now you can put what you have learned into practice. Love and romance take on a new perspective this month as Venus shines her favourable light on you.

Neptune has returned to your sign for a few moths and this may mean that unfinished business has to be sorted out now. Groups, clubs and involvement with new networks are of particular interest and as Mars changes sign on the 11th you are drawn to working together with interesting new people.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22 With energetic Mars in your sign from the 11th this can turn out to be the month where you could achieve anything that you have set your heart on. Optimistic Jupiter in fellow earth sign Taurus also bestows a new aura of confidence and self-assurance and the 18th is particularly advantageous for success.

COMMON SENSE RIP This is a condition, which exist in many parts of this world. An Obituary printed in the London Times..... Absolutely Brilliant !! Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights I Want It Now Someone Else Is To Blame I’m A Victim

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn’t always fair; - and maybe it was my fault.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

I never knew this about Penguins

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned butoverbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica - where do they go ? - Wonder no more ! ! ! It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualisticbird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing: and wanted to have an abortion. “Freeze a jolly good fellow” “Freeze a jolly good fellow.” Common Sense lost the will to live as the “Then they kick him in the ice hole.” churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. You really didn’t believe that I know anything Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t about penguins, did you! defend yourself from a burglar in your own home sorry, i just had to forward this one! and the burglar could sue you for assault.
