Hands-on appeal for Fleetwood clean up A new start for the new year. That's one resolution Fleetwood folk are being encouraged to make by the organisers of a Cleansweep in Pharos ward. A multi-agency approach will see an intensive clean-up of the area between 24 and 28 January. As well as a major purge on physical blights such as fly-tipping, graffiti and dog fouling, officers will be dealing with other issues that have a negative effect on neighbourhoods, such as anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime.

Help needed to catch Fleetwood fly-tippers Fleetwood folk are being asked to come forward with information following a spate of fly-tipping in the town. Three large tips have been discovered within the last week and waste bosses at Wyre Borough Council are now appealing for help with finding out who was responsible. The biggest haul was found on 14 December. Four tonnes of builders waste was dumped on Jameson Road, mostly old fashioned roof slates and felt. A large tip was also found at the rear of Hazeldene Avenue on 10 December and another at the rear of Lindel Road on 13 December. These were a combination of garden waste and kitchen and bathroom fittings. All three were removed but the council the same day as they were reported.

Pupil Power Some tough decisions had to be made by youngsters from Fleetwood High School when they were put "in charge" of council coffers for an afternoon. The Year 7 students were taking part in a Pupil Power exercise, run by Wyre Borough Council, that challenged them to get the most out of a tight budget and decide which public services they would have to lose to balance the books. The debate was guided by Wyre councillors and among those considered less of a priority by pupils were parks, Tourist Information Centres and public toilets. Pupil Power, which is open to all high schools, is designed to help young people appreciate the decisions that have to be made in local government. Permission granted for new Rossall Point tower Plans for a new observatory tower on the Rossall coastline have been given the go ahead. Wyre Borough Council's Planning Committee unanimously granted permission for the iconic structure, part of the ÂŁ1.6m Sea Change programme to improve the waterfront, which is set to become something of a destination centre. Now more detailed work on the design and materials will begin ready for construction to start in the spring. Features of the tower, replacing an existing out dated facility used by the National Coast Watch Initiative (NCI) at Rossall Point, include several viewing platforms open to the public, an education centre on the ground floor where views from the top will be projected on to screens and a new home for the NCI volunteers.
"Engagement with the people of Fleetwood will also continue as we develop the artwork. We're looking to make it part of the structure, not just stuck to the building; something thought provoking that tells a story. The public can really contribute to this with their ideas."

Mount Racing Club On a cold Thursday afternoon The Mount Racing Club travelled down to Dunstall Park Racecourse at Wolverhampton for the last race on the card a 1m4f handicap. Hopes were high that their versatile 3yo star Valantino Oyster could follow on from his impressive debut the week before where he finished 3rd and maybe this time fare even better. Sent off favourite at odds of 6/4 he travelled nicely throughout and as they turned for home it became clear that he was the only horse that was to throw down a challenge to the long time leader Port Hill. Under a determined drive from jockey Paddy Donaghy he began to claw back the leader and as the post loomed he drew along side until neck and neck they flashed past the judge together. It was a nail biting few minutes for all the Mount Racing Club members who were trackside but unfortunately the outcome of the photo finish went against us and Valantino was beaten by the shortest of short heads. This was another solid run from Valantino Oyster and one that suggests next time out it could be his turn for winning. To date Valantino Oyster has won twice on the Turf, finished 2nd and 3rd on the All Weather and 3rd over Hurdles behind a very decent Tim Vaughn horse called Architrave. His next assignment will probably be back at Wolverhampton in the New Year where we hope to be gracing the Winners enclosure once again. Then he will

be given a short break to freshen him up before resuming his Hurdling career in the Spring.
