Councillor urges people to get behind Olympics

A leading councillor is calling for crowds to cheer on the Olympic torchbearers when they pass through Lytham, St Annes, Fairhaven and Warton on 23 June.
The 23 June torchbearing starts at 6.20am at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. It is the same day as Lytham Club Day and it is hoped that people will set their alarm clocks a few hours earlier and make a long day of it by attending both events.
One torchbearer’s name has been released so far by Olympic organisers. It looks like being an exciting end to the 2011/12 campaign for the YMCA. The Under 9 and 10 7-a-side teams have both reached the Poulton Primary League’s Coulton Cup Finals at Fleetwood Town FC’s ground on 21st April, The Under 9s kicking off at 9.30am and the Under 10s at 11.00am. In the Blackpool & Dist Youth Football 11-a-side League the club’s Under 14s and 15s have both reached their Hogan Cup Finals to be played on a date to be announced next month and the Under 11s and 12 are hoping to join them. Both play their semi finals at Stanley Park Arena on 15th April.
After clinching Cup Final places the Under 14s and 15s are now chasing league and cup doubles with both teams currently clear leaders of their respective leagues. Fylde’s new Spitfire taxis for take-off
The fighter was piloted by Sergeant Allan Lever-Ridings who died on the sortie. His mother and grandparents lived in St Annes and surviving relatives will attend the dedication service.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This memorial will be a very welcome addition to the attractions of Fairhaven Lake.
Planning councillors have granted planning permission for a full-sized RAF Fighter and Bomber Command memorial at Fairhaven Lake.
“The volunteers have done a great job in bringing this important part of the area’s history back to life. I’m sure that visitors will be fascinated by such a spectacle – and to learn of the role of ordinary Lytham St Annes citizens in helping to raise the funds to fight the last world war.
The memorial’s centrepiece will be a 31ft-long Supermarine Spitfire with 35ft wingspan. It will be mounted on a support and be 27ft above the ground on land between the miniature golf course and the lake.
“Many from our area, of course, were combatants. Those who stayed behind raised an incredible £6,500 to buy the area’s own Spitfire.
The replica aircraft will be the same in every detail as the Spitfire W3644 that was bought by Lytham St Annes residents as part of the Wings for Victory campaign in 1941.
“More significantly than the money, we remember Sergeant Allan Lever-Ridings who was killed in action flying the Spitfire. Britain may not have won the war if it had not been for the bravery of relatively small numbers of flyers like Sergeant Lever-Ridings.
Money for the replica has been raised by locally based Spitfire Memorial Fund volunteers who hope to install the plane on 20 June this year ahead of a dedication service on 24 June.
“The memorial will be a full-sized replica and a talking point for visitors and for generations of residents who were born after the war. Fylde keenly awaits its installation and dedication.”
The 24 June service has been chosen as it will be the 70th anniversary of the day when Spitfire W3644 was shot down off the Devon coastline while returning from escorting Boston bombers which had been on a bombing mission over Morlaix in France.
The fibre-glass plane will be set at an angle so it appears to be swooping.
The Air Ministry named the 19 Squadron fighter “Lytham St Annes” as the area’s residents had raised £6,500 for its purchase.
The memorial will also incorporate an information screen and roll of honour containing the names of fighter, bomber and Coastal Command aircrew.

The day consisted of a wonderful three course lunch interspersed with toasts from members of the Association of Speakers Clubs, and was topped off with a raffle. We were pleased to have the National President, Robert Ramsay who came all the way from Arbroath to celebrate with the club. We enjoyed the company of past and current Presidents and had many guests from other regional Speakers Clubs. The following speakers clubs were represented: Wyre Speakers Club, Morecambe Ladies, Morecambe, Burnley and District Speaking Club, Standish Speakers club, Burnley and Pendle, Garstang Ladies and Blackburn Castle. The first 40 years of the Fylde Speakers Club have been full of life and we are sure that the next 40 years will be equally as full. We would love to welcome new members to the club. Lytham’s spectacular outdoor summer The May blossom is out and there’s already a healthy demand for tickets for the outdoor plays at Lytham Hall this summer. Tickets for the season of four plays in June, July and August are selling well as Lytham St. Annes’ folks think ahead to a spectacular summer of outdoor events. Chapterhouse Theatre Company will launch the season at Lytham Hall on Friday 15 June. The company will make their Lytham debut with Richard Main’s production of Jane Austen’s popular novel Emma which has been adapted for the stage by Laura Turner. Illyria will return to Lytham Hall after three very successful shows last summer with Oliver Gray’s production of one of Shakespeare’s most patriotic plays Henry V on Tuesday 3 July. Oliver Gray is looking forward to being part of the Lytham Hall bill once again. “We love the enthusiasm of our loyal followers on the Lancashire coast”, he said, “and our choice of Henry V for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year is meeting with much approval.” And just eight days later there’s a real coup for the town. On Thursday 12 July the Hall will play host to one of the first performances by Illyria of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta HMS Pinafore. This second musical production by the company, following a triumph with Pirates of Penzance in 2011, will subsequently play around 50 open air dates at outdoor venues throughout the country.
June, July & August 2012 To complete the season there’s another summer treat for Fylde coast families as Illyria are back in the afternoon of Bank Holiday Sunday 26 August with the Roald Dahl favourite The Twits. Julian Wilde who is organising the season of plays is delighted with the initial response both from the Lytham St. Annes public and from local businesses to this summer’s programme. “All the ticket outlets report that people have been asking for tickets for some time” he said. “I think the variety in this summer’s programme is especially appealing. It’s excellent to have the performance of HMS Pinafore here right at the beginning of Illyria’s summer tour. Four new ticket outlets, Bennetts Bakery, Silverdell Books, The Music Cellar and Tower Music will enable open air theatre fans to purchase tickets in Ansdell, Kirkham, Preston and Blackpool respectively. .......................................................................
