Now is the TIME to INVEST in Solar Managing Director Chris Brook setup Ultimate Green Energy Ltd after graduating from Durham University and qualifying as a chartered accountant with Ernst and Young LLP. Chris sees the solar panel industry as a great investment opportunity for both homeowners and business owners. With bank interest rates very low and share prices particularly volatile, investing in solar panels can give you an extremely healthy investment return of up to 12%. When you consider these returns are government backed for 25 years, tax free and index linked it is hard to find a better investment in the current market.
consider energy prices are predicted to increase 60% by 2016. Chris also urges property owners considering installing solar panels to invest before April 2012 as the rate of return will be reduced after this date. While Chris acknowledges there are a number of new companies starting up in the solar industry he believes UGE brings something different to the table. Chris says “UGE are here for the long term and looking to increase our customer base by offering the most competitive prices for a quality solar panel installation. This quality extends from our solar panels to our installation teams to our customer service. We want all our customers to be happy with their systems not only today but 10 years from now.”
Chris is looking at UGE from a financial UGE are also backed by the two managing directors perspective and trying to educate property of Smith Group UK Ltd, a local company with over owners that the initial costs of any investment in 50 years’ experience in the energy efficiency market solar panels are nearly always outweighed by the future income and energy savings. This is especially true when you

Lytham St Annes News
Civic Thanks for In Bloom Army Fylde’s civic-minded gardeners have done the borough proud by scooping a record 25 awards in this year’s North West in Bloom awards. Green-fingered citizens landed more awards than any other part of the North West while St Annes crowned the record by winning the Best Large Coastal Resort category - toppling Southport which has repeatedly won the section in recent years. Best Small Coastal Resort category was won by Lytham while Kirkham and Freckleton also landed honours in the Best Town category.
• Highly Commended: Memorial Gardens, Lytham; • The Environmental Quality Award: The Friends of Estuary, Lytham; • In Bloom Neighbourhood Awards: The Homestead Retirement Home, Lytham; Hedges Retirement Home, Lytham; Dicky Bush, Ansdell; St Leonard’s Road West, St Annes. Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Fylde’s gardeners have, once again, done the Borough proud and rightly deserve the gratitude of our residents.
2011 roll of honour:
“The council helps where it can, but most of the work and credit belongs to an army of volunteers • Best Caravan Park: Lama Leach Caravan Park, who raise money and devote thousands of hours to improving their areas. “Their work confirms Freckleton - Gold Medal; Fylde as one of the most civic-minded places in • Best Residential Accommodation: Braxfield the North West of England. Court, St Annes - Gold Medal; “It is such important work. It is noticed by • Best Residential Award: Braxfield Court, St everyone, not least the visitors to the area who Annes; regularly write to the town hall pointing out how • Best Large Accommodation: Clifton Arms their visit was enhanced by the glorious floral Hotel - Silver Gilt Medal; displays. • Best Large Coastal Resort: St Annes - Silver Gilt Medal; • Best Large Coastal Resort winner: St Annes; • Best Small Coastal Resort: Lytham; • Best Small Coastal Resort Category Winners: Lytham; • Best Village: Elswick - Gold Medal; • Best Large Village: Staining – Bronze medal; Ansdell – Silver Medal; Wrea Green – Silver Medal; • Best Small Town: Wesham – Bronze;
“Both Lytham and St Annes, whose victory over Southport in the Best Large Coastal Resort award was monumental, have led the charge this year but every corner of the borough has some recognition. We have won 25 awards in total this year, significantly more than the 15 awards of last year, and Lytham will hear next week (Friday 28 October) if it has won the international Communities in Bloom award. “Everyone will be rooting for Lytham to win in Quebec and bring yet more recognition to Fylde. However, the very fact that Lytham has reached this stage is a huge honour in itself.”
• Best Town - Kirkham: Silver Gilt Medal; Freckleton – Gold Medal; • Environmental Award for Schools: Lytham Hall Primary School; Strike Lane Primary School (Freckleton); • The Clean Sweep Award: Elswick; • Best Front Garden Award: Mr Churchman, Mythop Rd, Lytham; 16

SWEET TASTE OF DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR TWELVE TWELVE Restaurant & Lounge Bar has retained its coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand status and its prestigious 2AA Rosettes for 2012. It is the eighth year that the award-winning Fylde coast restaurant has held Michelin Bib Gourmand status and the fifth year it has been awarded 2AA Rosettes. Twelve is one of only two establishments in Lancashire to be awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which is increasingly becoming appreciated as diners seek out restaurants that offer good food and good value. It passed inspectors’ high standards to retain the award which recognises the provision of good food at moderate prices. The Michelin guide to the British Isles has been published early in October 2011 instead of January 2012 to bring it in line with the release dates of the other global publications.
According to the AA, the longestablished Rosette scheme for restaurants recognises successful cooking at different levels across the UK. Only establishments that aim for and achieve higher standards, better consistency, greater precision and attention to the selection of quality ingredients are awarded 2AA Rosettes. It is the only restaurant on the Fylde coast to have 2AA Rosettes. Caroline Upton, Front of House Proprietor at Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have retained both our Michelin Bib Gourmand status and our 2AA Rosettes; they are much sought after accolades and send out a clear message to diners they can be assured of high standards at Twelve.” For more information about Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar, and Twelve visit www.twelve-restaurant.co.uk

LINK-Magazine Proud to Sponsor The Wyre Seagulls Ice Hockey Team Shaun Hartley representing LINK-Magazine pictured far left with the team
The Seagulls were formed in 1951 and played in the Midland Intermediate League from 1951 to 1955. In the 1955-56 seasons they lost just one match all year. In the 1960’s with no official leagues in the UK ‘non-league’ ice hockey continued with mini-tournaments competed for at the ice rinks of Blackpool. In 1982 they joined the newly formed British Hockey League (BHL) which has replaced the three top flight regional leagues in the United Kingdom, to form one top flight league. In 1982-83 they finished second.
Now twenty years after the disband, Simon Pearce (Head Coach) alongside old Seagull Gary Shearman, the Seagulls have been reborn with a new team in the brand new Sub Zero Arena in Cleveleys.
The Seagulls then joined the newly created second tier of the BHL, The British Hockey League Division One. In their first season in the First Division, 1983-84 they finished in sixth place out of eleven teams. The following season was more successful as the Seagulls finished in third place.
Martin Gardner the proprietor of MSG Media Ltd which runs LINK-Magazine said “It’s great that a successful local product like LINK-Magazine that supports local business with a cost effective advertising media and allows free publication of local events and charities is now also putting back into the local community by supporting grass roots sports”.
The 1986-87 seasons saw the Seagulls finish in the lower half of the Division One table, the 11th out of sixteen teams.
LINK-Magazine was asked by Adam Bradley who works at Wyre Building Supplies about sponsorship and as we already sponsor two local football teams Fleetwood Gym and Bispham Junior Football Federation, we thought why not sponsor on ice!
“We hope our success will rub off on the Wyre Seagulls and wish them great success for the coming year as we know what it’s like to have a great team In 1993, Ice Hockey came to an end in Blackpool after 42 years, because the rink at the Pleasure Beach together”. We are a true local business run by local people, helping the local economy and the local was considered too small to host competitive ice community at all levels” hockey. For a short while the Seagulls name was retained as the club and some of its players moved to SEAGULLS ICE HOCKEY IS BACK ON THE COAST!! the Blackburn Arena. But within a couple of years the Seagulls name was dropped completely.

Arabian Night Lowther Pavilion, Lytham 7th - 11th December ‘11 Tickets from Lowther Box Office 01253 794221 or www.lowtherpavilion.co.uk www.nogalproductions.co.uk
The group has been going for 27 years raising money for Special Needs Youngsters in the Fylde area. I was much honored to receive an MBE in the birthday honours list in 2000 for my work with Special Needs Children. Nogal originally raised money for Pear Tree Special School but in recent years we have expanded our funding to cover the needs of Special Needs Youngsters in the mainstream schools. Nogal started with just 10 members and our numbers have increased to over 40 with ages ranging from 4 to 70 years. We pride ourselves that our company is very family orientated. My husband Peter is our Chairman and both our children have taken part in our shows. My daughter Vicki is now one of my assistant directors and choreographers. Each year we produce two shows one in July and the other in December. I write all our pantomimes and many of our shows. But we have done many of the big musicals including ‘Sound of Music’, ‘Annie’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘Oliver’ and ‘The Full Monty’ Last summer we were proud to be able to present ‘Titanic The Musical’ which was a great success. Over the years we have been very proud to win many coveted awards from The National Operatic and Dramatic Association for our shows. From December 7th to the 10th we are presenting ‘The Last Arabian Night’ at Lowther Pavilion, Lytham which is a musical containing two wonderful stories told by Princess Sheherazade to her husband the Sultan of Baghdad. Since we began back in 1984 we have always done a pantomime at Christmas which has been a highlight of our year. However this year we have been told by the trustees of the Lowther Pavilion Theatre that we cannot do a pantomime as it would clash with the professional one. Obviously after 27 years we are very sad not to be able to do our usual Christmas panto but I have re-written the show and it promises to be even better. We are hoping that people will come along and support us to prove that amateur theatre in the area is very much alive and just as good as
the professional shows. It would be awful to see amateur theatre die as it provides enjoyment for not only our audiences but also the cast members. Everyone in our group is dedicated and hard working. They love performing and knowing that they can make a difference in the lives of those special youngsters makes it even more worthwhile. I am very lucky to have been associated with such generous and talented people over the years. Many of our members have gone on to careers in the entertainment industry. My son Scott runs his own professional production company LucyScott Productions and my daughter Vicki is a talented singer and entertainer on the local cabaret scene both as a solo performer and also as one half of the vocal harmony group New Direction with Gareth Pearson who is also a member of Nogal and is my other assistant director and choreographer. One of our past young ladies Laura Muggridge tours the country with her one woman comedy show and one young man Matthew Cameron has appeared on the London Stage. Many of our current youngsters are studying Theatre Arts and hope to pursue similar careers. I am very proud of each and every one of them. I know I can be a strict taskmaster because I want our shows to be successful but I also want the cast to enjoy themselves. It is important to love what you are doing. Nogal is a family of people who work hard to provide wonderful entertainment. We sing, dance, laugh and cry together and we enjoy every moment. Please come and support our Christmas show ‘The Last Arabian Night’ at Lowther Pavilion, Lytham,Tickets are £10 and £8 and can be obtained through Lowther Pavilion Box Office on 01253 794221. We want to make this a huge success and to get full houses would be wonderful. We can promise you a wonderful evening’s entertainment. Hope to see you there’.

Action in rooting out benefits cheats has resulted in a top award for Fylde Council. Over the last financial year a joint investigation team from both Fylde Council and Preston City Council has worked together to identify 140 fraudsters guilty of swindling benefits such as Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit. Legal sanctions obtained have included fines, community service, fixed penalties and cautions. In addition, all fraudulently claimed benefit must be repaid.
“Council Tax-payers are hard-pressed enough in the current climate and Fylde Council will ensure that their money is well spent. We have a zero tolerance for fraud. “The Preston and Fylde Council team works together to check suspicious claims. The partnership working means the cost to each council is reduced while spreading the area of expertise. “We identified more than £500,000 of fraudulently claimed benefits in Fylde and Preston – money that the courts have ordered be returned to public funds.”

Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatments Non Surgical treatment has become increasingly popular for both women and men over the past decade. Indeed a troll through the internet can leave you confused and baffled as to which clinic to choose and what treatments to choose help improve your appearance. I have chosen the two commonest non surgical treatments offered by most clinics, that is, Botox and Dermal fillers.
Botox (anti-wrinkle injection) is mainly used to treat the upper face and improve expression lines on the forehead, brow and around the eyes. It works by relaxing the muscle in these areas, hence soften the lines formed over the years. With regular treatment lines can actually disappear. Indeed there are a number of different brands of anti-wrinkle injections but they all essentially work in the same way.

Dermal fillers on the other hand is generally
used to treat the lower part of the face especially lines around the nose, mouth, upper lip and chin areas. Dermal fillers are also used to give volume and shape to both upper and lower lips. There are also a huge range of branded fillers but the most well know is Restylane. Fillers are injected along the facial lines to help lift and smoothen their appearance. Essentially they replace the hyaluronic acid in the skin lost with age. Results can be very user dependent so make sure you choose a fully qualified practitioner. At SL Medical we take the time to understand and address our client’s needs and expectations before taking any decision to treat. That is why we offer all our clients a free no obligation consultation and provide expert advice on the range of treatments we offer. All treatments are performed by a fully qualified doctor. The four of the YMCA teams involved in Lancs FA’s County Cup competitions, the Under 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s all reached the 4th rounds of their respective competitions during October. Over 100 teams from throughout Lancashire enter each competition age group every season and for all four to progress to the last 16 is an excellent achievement for the club. In the league the club’s Under 9s, 14s and 15s all reached the end of October on top of their leagues with unbeaten records and the Under 10s were league leaders also. The club’s Under 14s, who have been league champions for the past four seasons, seem to have been victims of their own success. Just prior to the start of the season they lost two players,
Jordan Milligan and Kit Gregory to Blackpool FC’s Centre of Excellence. At the end of October two other players, Jamie Walsh and Ellis Hancox, also departed to join Preston North End’s Centre of Excellence which now leaves manager Ryan Roberts’ squad a little depleted. The club now fields four Girls Teams as well, Under 10s, 12s, 14s, and 18s, and all have made very satisfactory start to the season. The Under 18s though have a small squad in number and urgently require new recruits. ‘Lozz’ Rose, Secretary Lytham St Annes YMCA Football Club Tel: (H) 01253 714082 (Mb) 07957 596326

Fylde Council Tackles Irresponsible Cocklers Cocklers must toe the line and minimise disruption to residents is the message that Fylde Council wants to enforce. Cocklers have thronged to the Seafield Road area of Lytham when the weather is right – prompting complaints of litter, poor parking and public-order offences. Recent steps taken by Fylde Council to alleviate the situation include extra litter bins, the placing of a large commercial waste skip, daily litter patrols by council staff and volunteers, directing cocklers to the toilets outside Lowther Pavilion – which are being kept open 24 hours per day – and regular attendance by staff authorised to issue £75 instant penalties for litterbugs. The council has no legal authority to stop cockling as the licences are issued and enforced by the Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority.
“It is all costing money. At the moment absolutely anyone can come here and take away cockles worth a small fortune. We have told the minister that we want some of that money to meet the costs incurred by Fylde Council Tax-payers – and also want some way to give local people priority when permits are issued so that the local economy and community sees some benefits. “We are working with the other enforcement agencies to check that they have cockling licences, the correct documentation for their vehicles, to check that their vehicles aren’t using agricultural red diesel and to check that none of the workers are illegal. The agencies involved include the Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority, the police, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. “There are suspicions that some of the cocklers aren’t operating legally. Bona fide operators, of course, are more likely to work responsibly and in a way that won’t unnecessarily inconvenience residents.” Secretary of State Mr Benyon has yet to reply
to Councillor Threlfall’s letter.
Councillor Tommy Threlfall, Fylde Council cabinet member for Environment and Partnerships, has also written to Richard Benyon, Secretary of State for the Natural Environment and Fisheries, to ask that the law be changed to let the council to raise money from allowing access across the beach – money that could be used to offset the costs incurred in managing the cocklers’ activities. Councillor Threlfall said: “Residents’ interests are paramount and we have had council staff out from 3.30 in the morning to monitor the activities of cocklers. “There have been around 100 vehicles on the beach and the road in the Seafield Road area and they are a real nuisance to residents.
Action on cockling: Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader (left), and Councillor Tommy Threlfall view the scene from Lytham’s Seafield Road slipway.
“Fylde Council can’t stop cockling but we do our utmost to ensure it is conducted in a way that minimises disruption to other people.

Introducing… The Peel2Save fundraising card is one of the most efficient and effective ways for charities, schools, clubs, youth groups and other non-profit organisations to raise much needed money.
The Ultimate .Super Simple High Profit Fundraiser! The Peel2Save fundraising card is a brilliant way for charities to raise much needed money. Peel2Save cards are credit-card sized – so they fit neatly into a purse or wallet. They contain 64 individual peel off coupons each one promoting a great local business. In total the offers are typically worth well over £300 – and all the offers are local to you.
You sell the cards for £10 each and get to keep £5 from every card sold. The consumer wins, you win and local businesses benefit too. It’s a total community effort where everybody gains. If you would like to find out more about whether Peel2Save could work for your organisation simply give us a call... “It’s not like making a donation because I’m getting such great value from the card” Lindy Elledge

The pain of handling a relative’s death is being eased by a new service that simplifies the process of informing officialdom. The new Tell Us Once service, available through Fylde Council and the Department for Work and Pensions, removes the need for multiple contacts with dozens of different organisations. From Wednesday 19 October, grieving relatives must still inform the registrar of a death. They will then be offered the Tell Us Once service which will inform the following services: • Fylde Council’s Housing Benefit office; • Fylde Council’s Council Tax Benefit office;
The service, if further requested, will also contact the following services: council housing, Council Tax, libraries, parking Blue Badges, adult social care, children’s social care, electoral services, the DVLA. Councillor Albert Pounder, Fylde Council cabinet member for Customer and Operational Services, said: “Everyone has heard stories of relatives who have found it enormously time-consuming going round a large number of different organisations. “This happens at a terribly difficult time. Some people forget to tell some organisations and are then distressed to later receive letters from officialdom addressed to their loved one. “This new service will stop that. From next week, the relative must still inform the registrar who will tell them of the Tell Us Once service at either Fylde Council or the Department for Work and Pensions. “We will then inform the whole range of organisations on their behalf. While it will still be a difficult time for family members, it will become a bit easier than before.”
• The Pension Service; • Disability and Carers’ Service; • Jobcentre Plus; • Child Benefit;
People will be able to call in person at Fylde Council on Clifton Drive South, St Annes, or telephone the DWP on 0800 0857308.
• Tax Credits; • Identity and Passport Service.
