LSA YMCA’s Under 15s created history on 1st March by becoming the first team ever in Lancashire to achieve Lancs FA County Cups in three successive seasons. They won the trophy 2 years ago at Under 13s and last season at Under 14s. In the Under 15 Final, held as usual under floodlights at the Lancs FA Headquarters in Leyland, they beat Merseyside outfit St Helens Town in a thrilling contest. A double strike by Jamie Thomas gave YMCA a 2-0 interval lead. St Helens pulled a goal back soon after half time but Aiden Atchison quickly restored YMCA’s 2-goal lead. However, a battling St Helens side made a spirited revival with two further goals to level the scores at 3-3 and a penalty shootout looked on the cards to decide the issue. With just 60 seconds remaining though Atchison latched on to a through ball and fired home a low drive for a dramatic winner giving YMCA a nail-biting 4-3 victory.
With over 100 teams from all over the county entering every year this is a very tough competition to win so to notch three successive County Cups is an amazing feat. Another great achievement by the YMCA this season is that its seven boys teams and three girls teams all reached the semi finals of their respective local league cup competitions, the first time this has ever happened at the YMCA making this a remarkable season so far for the club.

Fylde Council Tax freeze: second year in row Fylde councillors last night approved a Council Tax freeze for the second year running. The average Council Tax bill for a Band D home will remain at £186.29 when bill are posted to homes later this month.
The budget for April 2012 to April 2013 includes: • An extra £40,000 to improve promenade pavements; • An extra £50,000 to support planning appeals; • A freeze on car-parking charges; • £200,000 for improvements in Ansdell – things such as new paving, street furniture and landscaping. • Annual savings of at least £92,000 in reduced borrowing costs. Total council net spending for the coming year will be £10.9m, funded by £5,753m in Council Tax, and grants from central government of £585,000 in the form of New Homes Bonus, a £278,000 Council Tax Freeze Grant and a total of £3.756m in the form of Revenue Support Grant and National Non-Domestic Rates. A total of £530,000 will be taken from council reserves to keep Council Tax bills low. Reserves for 2012/13 will be £2,537m – comfortably above the £750,000 “prudential minimum”.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “The main grant from central government has reduced significantly in the last two years and by £603,000 in the last year alone. “The nation is short of money and every part of the public sector has had to adjust - just as householders have also had to adjust. Fylde Council knows how citizens are suffering hard times and we are determined not to add to their costs by increasing bills year on year. “Bills have now been frozen for two years on the trot, meaning that average Council Tax demands from Fylde Council will not have gone up in three years. “Our first priority is preserving the frontline services that people rely on while cutting back-office costs. Pupils queue to be Mayor for a minute The citizens of the future enjoyed an entertaining lesson in public life when they met Fylde’s Mayor and Mayoress. Pupils from 15 schools were at the Town Hall to meet the civic duo when Mayor Howard Henshaw invited the children to try on the civic regalia. Attendant Alan Blundell joined in by offering his top hat and the Town Hall’s reception room was a blur of activity as children sat in the Mayor’s chair, carried the mace, wore the Mayor’s robes, tried on the Mayoral chains and wore the Mayor’s hat. Some girls also wore the Mayoress’s chain and hat. Councillor Howard Henshaw, “first citizen” until this May, explained how his role was to represent the Queen in Fylde – and that the job required special clothes to look the part. He said: “They were a particularly bright set of children. They asked questions ranging from security arrangements for the historic chains to questions about the historical significance of the mace which, of course, is a ceremonial adaptation of the weapon of war historically used by knights to club the enemy.
“Mayoral attendant Alan Blundell explained the history of Fylde and the Town Hall which, of course, used to be the Southdown Hydro Hotel until 1925. Inevitably, they all wanted to be a Mayor for a few minutes and really looked the part.” One child even asked if the Mayoral attendant was allowed to take the civic car home! The answer was no! To celebrate the start of 2012 a weight loss expert from Fleetwood is sharing the secrets of successful slimming to help people turn their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight into a healthy reality. Fylde’s grief at sergeant’s Afghan death
“Sergeant Coupe was in Afghanistan to make life safer for the rest of us and that must never be forgotten.
Fylde’s mayor has paid tribute to Sergeant Nigel Coupe (33) on behalf of the borough.
“The bravery of our troops is something that must never be taken for granted.”
Sergeant Coupe, from St Annes, was killed with five other soldiers on Tuesday 6th March when the Warrior fighting vehicle they were travelling in was destroyed by an improvised explosive device.
Sergeant Coupe was a member of the 1st Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. The Warrior vehicle was on a routine patrol through the desert when struck by the Taliban device.
The Union Flag is flying at half-mast at the town hall. Councillor Howard Henshaw, mayor of Fylde, said: “The whole of the nation owes a debt to Sergeant Coupe and the whole of Fylde will be thinking of his family and friends. “Words can be of little comfort at a time like this – but everyone has the deepest admiration for the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for the benefit of others.
