Recipe
Beef, Shallot and Sweet Potato Curry This rich, fragrant curry is a recipe to treasure, and one that you’ll want to make again and again. Boldly spiced, it is seriously tasty and yet easy to make. Serves 4 - 6
Ingredients: 800g rump beef cut into cubes 3 tbsp sesame oil 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed 16 shallots peeled and left whole 4 cloves of garlic (crushed) 1 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli, seeded and finely diced 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp ground cinnamon ½ cinnamon stick 1 tbsp curry powder ½ tsp black pepper 4 lemon rind strips 250 ml thick coconut milk 125 ml beef stock 1 tsp sugar Sea salt and black pepper 14

Preparation Time; 20 minutes Cooking Time; 1 hour ¼
Method: Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy based saucepan and seal the meat in batches. Remove the meat from the pan and keep warm. Add the sesame seed oil and the shallots to the pan and sauté for 2 – 3 minutes, then add the sweet potatoes, crushed garlic, ginger, turmeric, curry powder, chilli, ground cinnamon, cinnamon stick and black pepper and cook for 2 minutes making sure the spices are cooked and sizzling. Add the beef, lemon rind, coconut milk and stock. Season well with the sea salt and the sugar. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. If, after this time the gravy is not thick enough, then raise the heat and cook rapidly until the gravy has thickened. Serve with steamed Thai rice.

The new exhibition for 2020 is ' Take A Deep Breath' - the story of the world famous lozenge, Fisherman's Friend. The exhibition, sponsored by Lofthouse of Fleetwood, features the only bottle of James Lofthouse's original linctus still in existence! This exhibition is proving very popular, so call in to find out more about this Fleetwood firm. Fleetwood's last Arctic trawler, Jacinta, a floating museum in the port since 1995, is being scrapped due to weaknesses in the structure of the hull. Many artefacts from the trawler have been donated to Fleetwood Museum by the Jacinta Trust. Some items are on show in the deep sea gallery. The museum shop has numerous local interest books on sale, Fleetwood postcards, children's pocket money toys and unusual gifts. Why not pop in to look round? Our second hand bookshop, next to the Museum, where hundreds of books are priced at only 50p each, will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10.30am - 3.30pm, also Wednesday afternoons 1.15pm - 3.30pm. In order to comply with social distancing requirements, the coffee house and lecture room will not be open for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately due to steep steps and stairs the building is not accessible to people with mobility difficulties. Due to the ongoing coronavirus we will not be arranging any talks or walks this year and the Historical Society which met in the museum for their winter season of talks have cancelled their programme till next year. Many months ago scaffolding was erected on the front of the museum. What started out as just a painting job revealed many hidden problems, both inside and out. As

a Grade 2 listed building we have been delayed with waiting for permission to complete jobs and also by Covid lockdown. By the time you read this, hopefully the scaffolding will have been removed to reveal the museum, the oldest used building in the town, in all its glory.

Local News Heritage Tram Tours Our illuminated tramcars have been a feature of Blackpool Illuminations since the very start. Climb aboard a piece of moving history and travel along the promenade and Golden Mile, passing the three piers, the iconic Blackpool Tower and the illuminated tableaux section at Bispham. Wyre celebrates as parks once again win Green Flag Awards

Wyre’s parks join more than 2,000 sites across the country to collect the award for 2020 with pride, in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep. lackpool has been given the goahead to start work on two key projects that will help rejuvenate the town centre.
After successfully being allocated £8.6m of funding for two ‘shovel ready’ regeneration projects from the Government’s COVID-19 Getting Building Fund, the town has been given formal approval by the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to proceed with the schemes. The two projects, Houndshill Shopping Centre phase two and the regeneration of Abingdon Street Market, were the subject of detailed appraisal prior to being presented to the LEP board for approval. This process confirmed that the projects met all the required criteria offering robust timelines that will generate new development activity in the next 18 months, assuring fast deliverability and creation of jobs. The Getting Building Fund is in response to the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of

State for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) invited the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) as part of a UKwide Government initiative, to put forward ideas for accelerating existing Government funded capital projects within local growth programmes, to generate new development activity within 18 months, to help create jobs and raise overall demand in the economy. 1. Houndshill Shopping Centre – Phase 2 Development - £5m allocated As part of its strategy to revitalise the town centre Blackpool Council purchased the Houndshill Shopping Centre in Nov 19 for £47.6m, the aim being to support its sustainability and to re-purpose parts of it through the delivery of a transformational leisure and retail development. The mixed use development comprises: • 9 Screen Imax -style Cinema (40,575 sq ft) • 2 New Restaurants (3,760 sq ft) • A relocated Wilko Store (22,500 sq ft) The scheme objectives are to create new complementary leisure uses, while securing the

site for the tramway terminus through allowing the planned relocation of the existing Wilko store, providing new amenities and promote increased investor confidence in the area. The £5m allocated funding will be used enable this £20 million development to go ahead. 2. Abingdon Street Market - £3.63m allocated The aim of the project is to rejuvenate the visitor experience, growth, and sustainability of the Abingdon Street indoor market in Blackpool Town Centre. It will support the creation of a range of independent retail and food retail services, and office uses, together with performance space, that will provide amenities and wider benefits and promote increased investor confidence in the area. Abingdon Street indoor market, which has declined significantly in recent years and is currently for sale by its private owner. With a new offer it will address the needs and demands of residents and visitors and provide a modern experience at the heart of the town centre. The £3.63m will be used to acquire the building and undertake the refurbishment scheme. Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council said: “Lancashire Enterprise Partnership was looking for individual projects that were able to offer fast deliverability and the creation of jobs and we’re confident that the two Blackpool projects fulfil the brief. Houndshill Phase 2 Development and the regeneration of Abingdon Street Market are both projects that we were seeking funding for through our Future High Streets Fund bid and so we are delighted that we can now accelerate the delivery of these two projects and bring new jobs and opportunities into the town centre

sooner than originally planned.” “Over the past seven months the team at the council have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that none of the momentum is lost on the regeneration of the town centre and now that we have formal approval and funds in place, we can hit the ground running.” Steve Fogg, Chair of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership said, ''It is fantastic that Blackpool has managed to secure funding for two projects through the Getting Building Better Fund. The Covid-19 crisis has naturally had an adverse impact on most areas of the Lancashire economy, and Blackpool particularly so due to its reliance on the tourism and leisure industries. “The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership is in regular dialogue with Government to ensure the economic effects are minimised and the county receives the support it needs and deserves. By working closely with our partners, we have successfully secured a total of £34.1m from the Getting Building Fund for investment in quality projects which will drive economic recovery and create jobs. The two schemes in Blackpool have the potential to create up to 225 jobs and revitalise the town centre. When added to the significant investment by the LEP through Growth Deal funds, the most recent of which was a contribution to the manufacturing facility on the Enterprise Zone, I am confident we will see transformational change in the town and increase investor confidence in the area.'' Take a virtual look inside Thornton’s historic Marsh Mill Marsh Mill, the 226 year old working mill in Thornton-Cleveleys, is inviting visitors to take a virtual tour of the historic building to discover its hidden secrets. Available on the Wyre Council website, viewers can learn how the mill originally operated as well as some little known facts. The windmill, built in 1794, has been unable to open to visitors due to the narrow quirks of the building making social distancing difficult. But now, visitors are invited to take a virtual step inside the historic Grade Two* listed building. The film is part of Wyre Council’s ‘Rediscover Wyre’ campaign, giving residents and visitors the chance to rediscover the charm of Wyre’s attractions during the pandemic. The tour has been delivered by Tom Halstead; a long-time volunteer guide of Marsh Mill.

Tom commented, “A tour of the mill normally takes about 45 minutes because there is so much to see and tell people about, but this is a great chance for anyone that hasn’t had the opportunity to visit the mill to take a quick behind the scenes tour of how the mill was originally used. “The mill being closed has been a blow to the volunteer guides who enjoy showing it off and meeting new people, so when the opportunity came along to do the tour, I jumped at it.” Marsh Mill has stood for 226 years after being commissioned by Bold Fleetwood Hesketh. It has much of its original machinery and is the most complete example of a windmill in the North West. These facts have earned the mill a Grade Two* listed title. Brian House joins call for funding to give families a break Brian House Children’s Hospice has joined a call to parliament for funding for respite breaks for terminally ill children and their families. Brian House, the children’s hospice for the Fylde coast, is joining other children’s hospices across the country in a call for funding help to Chancellor Rishi Sunak. Together, they are asking the government to create a ringfenced £434million grant for local councils to fill the funding gap in social care services for disabled children. Local authorities would be able to use this money to fund short breaks of respite care for serious ill and disabled children at their local children’s hospice. The campaign, which is being led by children’s hospice charity Together for Short Lives and Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in Dorset and Wiltshire, comes as new research estimates that more than one in 10 of parents of children who need respite at a local hospice, like Brian House, would experience significantly less stress and improved mental and physical health if they could all access them. Brian House Chief Executive, David Houston, said: “The pressure on families caring for a seriously ill child with complex needs is immense. “The burden of caring for a child 24/7 and the knowledge that your child will die young can be too much to bear, so having access to regular short breaks is vital to relieve this stress, spend time as a family and do the things that other families do. Yet, on average, local authority funding for short breaks for children’s hospices across England was cut by 12% in 2019/20. “The short breaks that Brian House provide are a lifeline for terminally ill children and their families. Parents tell us how important they are to help them recharge their batteries and spend time just being mum and dad, away from the 24/7 caring responsibilities that come with looking after a seriously ill child. “The pressure of lockdown has meant that these breaks are now more important than ever. We are incredibly grateful for the vital support we receive from our local community that helps to fund these breaks. But we also need the government to step up and make sure local councils provide funding to

sustain regular short breaks for families now and into the future.” The new research, by Pro Bono Economics in association with volunteers from Compass Lexecon, found that: • Reduced stress leads to improved physical health among carer parents, which in turn leads to reduced number of GP visits and cost-savings to the health system. Demand for GP services declines by 8 per cent as a result of an individual moving out of the most stressed category. • Reduced stress leads to improved mental health among carer parents, which in turn reduces the use of mental health services and the associated costs. Demand for mental health services falls by 49 per cent as an individual moves out of the most stressed category. • Improved work attendance: this can be measured in reduced number of sick days taken, which ultimately leads to increased productivity and additional tax revenue. For every working parent who experiences a reduction in stress, it is likely that this will reduce the number of days taken off work by around 2-3 days per year. • Short breaks are also likely to have a positive impact on siblings and reduce the risk of parental relationships breaking up.
