While the holiday season appears to have finally broken out and we can all enjoy some better weather, experts have warned the happy, carefree attitude that comes with a sunny day can also lead to careless driving.

Bike hire back for summer Blackpool’s hire-a-bike scheme is back for summer. The scheme re-opened on July 1 under the management of new operator, Cycles Recycled, who will run a pilot scheme from Monday until the end of the Illuminations in November. Under the new deal, the bikes are available from 8am until 8pm each day allowing visitors and residents to cycle the Promenade, parks and streets around Blackpool in the summer sunshine. The operator will be responsible for marketing and promoting the new scheme and will soon launch a new website to allow customers to pay via smart phone or the web as well as by phone and in person. There is also a special discounted rate for residents of Blackpool of £1 per hour with an initial deposit of £10 providing 15 hours of cycling. Visitors will pay £7 per day, although there will be discounts for hiring more than one bike. Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “I’m delighted to announce the hire-a-bike scheme is returning to Blackpool. “Blackpool is a perfect town for cycling; it’s very flat and we have excellent cycle lanes to ride in. “I would urge local residents and visitors to give the scheme a try and make it a success.” Ian Gibbs, director of Cycles Recycled, added: “Cycles Recycled are delighted to have been given the opportunity to work in partnership with Blackpool Council on this exciting venture. “We have been involved with cycling at ‘grassroots’ level for many years with aims to encourage more people to cycle more often.

“Don’t ignore a persistent cough” warns lung cancer campaign Blackpool Council is getting behind the next phase of the NHS Be Clear on Cancer campaign which aims to drive awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and encourage people with a persistence cough to see their GP early. Each year in Blackpool there are approximately 160 people diagnosed with lung cancer. The rate for new cases arising each year is 73 cases per 100,000 people, almost 60% higher than the national average, and 25% higher than the regional average. Lung cancer is currently England’s biggest cancer killer with 130 deaths in Blackpool alone. The death rate for lung cancer amongst Blackpool residents is 60 per 100,000 people, almost 60% higher than the national average and 28% higher than the regional average. Research conducted by The National Cancer Registration Service shows those diagnosed at the earliest stage are five times more likely to

survive lung cancer for at least five years than those diagnosed at a late stage. One of the main reasons behind the low early diagnosis rate is a lack of awareness about the disease and its symptoms. The Be Clear on Cancer campaign, which first ran in summer 2012, aims to make people aware of the symptoms of lung cancer and encourage them to visit their GP if they have had a cough for three weeks or more. Other symptoms include: · a cough that has got worse or changes · repeated chest infections · coughing up blood · breathlessness · feeling more tired than usual for some time · losing weight for no obvious reason · an ache or pain in your chest or shoulder that has lasted some time If you are worried about a persistent cough or spot any of the other symptoms visit your GP.
